Division 1 football league – Wednesday 3rd June
Shannonbridge 0-3 Rhode 3-19

Shannonbridge were over-whelmed by a full strength Rhode outfit this evening and on this showing, Rhode will be hard to stop on their way to successive Dowling cups as they tore apart a very weak Shannonbridge effort from the first blow of the Dinger Walsh’s whistle.
Indeed they led by 2-05 to 0-2 at the interval, hardly missing an effort on target as Shannonbridge struggled to get the ball forward with any momentum at all, although they did record 6 wides in the first period.
Rhode picked up in the 2nd half where they left off in the first, With attack after attack wielding many scores from all angles, Niall McNamee and Anton Sullivan doing most of the damage.

Teams:
Shannonbridge; D Kelly, S Flannery, W Keena, M Darcy, K Flannery, C Cougglan, P Maloney, J Ryan, J Egan, A Kelly(0-1), J Kelly, E Egan(0-1), K Kelly,, R O’Connor and P Kelly.
Subs: M Maloney, D Turley(0-1), D Corbett & C Kenny.
Rhode: R Heavey, D Murphy, S Sullivan, J Kilmurray, C Heavey, B Darby, E Byrne, A Brereton, A McNamee, J Coffey, R Malone, G O’Connell, A Sullivan, P Kelleghan & N McNamee.

Wedding bells.
Shannonbridge GAA wish to congratulate Michelle Mahon Clonfanlough & Ciaran Kenny from Boora on their recent wedding.
We wish them all the best for the future.

Best wishes.
Shannonbridge GAA would like to wish Sinead Moylan-Ryan all the best in the upcoming local elections. Sinead is of course the wife of Shannonbridge footballer John. So for everybody in the parish, get up and vote for Sinead!!

Good Luck
Shannonbridge GAA would like to wish all those who are doing their Junior and Leaving cert exams in the coming days. The very best of luck.

I don't want to be pedantic, however by favouring one candiate over another in the elections your club may be in breach of rule 7 of the Official Guide

Non-Party Political/Non-Sectarian
(a) The Association shall be non-party political. Party
political questions shall not be discussed at its
meetings, and no Committee, Club, Council or
representative thereof shall take part, as such, in any
party political movement. A penalty of up to twenty
four weeks suspension may be imposed for
infringement.
(b) The Association shall be non-sectarian.

That's something I never thought of at the time, but when I was down here in Galwal before the 2007 generals and was training with a club down here, I got a text message the night before the election to "Support Candidate X since he/she has been a long standing member and faithful supporter of our club.... etc."

So technically would that be in breach of the rule too then?

How is that meant to be interpreted? Does that mean that a club committee cannot endorse a candidate or party, or that a club committee member cannot endorse one? Obviously if the latter were the case then we'd have a lot of issues, however the reading of this is very ambiguous.

The key phrase in the rule in "as such".

The first part of the rule is clear, that no political business may be discussed at meetings or political questions tabled.

The "as such" phrase leaves it open for an individual to get personally involved in party politics, once it didn't interfere with the GAA. The same would apply to a Club, Council etc.

My reading of the rule is that messages sent on behalf of a club, favouring one candidate or another is in breach of the rule.

If a member of a Club canvasses a club to come out in support of his or her campaign, that individual would be in breach of the rule.

The rule rarely comes up, however two years ago Clubs were reminded not to all Candidates run rallies or benefit nights in clubhouse etc.

Furthermore Sinn Fein and Fine Gael were refused permission from Croke Park to hold their respective party conferences there a number of years ago, due to rule 7

Shannonbridge GAA notes 30.08.09

Post by Hocker »

Senior football championship - Relegation Playoff Off

Shannonbridge 0-12 2-10 Gracefield.
Shannonbridge were defeated in Killeigh on Saturday evening last by 4 points against a tough Gracefield side which leaves us requiring nothing only a victory against Edenderry next Wednesday, 2nd September to retain senior status for 2010.
Best for the Bridge on a very disappointing day were Kieran Flannery, John Ryan, Willy Keena & Paul Deeley.

All support for the Edenderry match would be very welcome.

Junior ‘B’ football championship matches – Bridge progress into quarter finals

Tullamore 1-8 Shannonbridge 1-8
The Bridge snatched a draw from the jaws of defeat on Wednesday 19th August in O’Brien park in impressive style as a goal courtesy of veteran Joe Duffy & two Roger Ryan points in the last 4 minutes secured an unlikely draw and left us in very good position going into the final group game with Erin Rovers.

Team: M Deeley, A Gunning, K Norton, D Hogan, C Kenny, V Darcy, M Maloney, J Killeen, A Coughlan, E Egan, R Ryan, M Kilduff, M Carty, G Quirke & S Coughlan.

Erin Rovers 1-5 Shannonbridge 0-14

Shannonbridge put in a strong 2nd half performance on Friday evening last to impressively over-come a determined Erin Rovers side on their home patch and progress into the Junior ‘B’ championship quarter finals.
Down by 2 points at half time, strong performances form the elder statesmen on the team, Colm Kenny, Vinny Darcy, Joe Duffy and Roger Ryan saw the Bridge prevail.

Team: M Deeley, A Gunning, K Norton, D Hogan, C Kenny, V Darcy, M Maloney, J Killeen, A Coughlan, E Egan, R Ryan, M Kilduff, M Carty, J Duffy & S Kelly.
