Kelly and Slattery honoured by Vodafone and the GAA

Monday, June 12

Tipperary’s hurling ace Eoin Kelly and Offaly’s football captain Karol Slattery enjoyed a mid-championship celebration on Monday when they were named the Vodafone GAA All-Stars Players of the Month for May.

The players were presented with the awards at a ceremony in Dublin’s Westbury Hotel attended by the president of the GAA Nicky Brennan and Vodafone’s Head of Brand and Marketing Helen Marks.

Kelly, who has started the championship in spectacular form, was honoured specifically for his outstanding contribution to Tipperary’s opening round victory against Limerick. That was the day he scored fourteen points, nine of those coming from play, one of the greatest scoring feats in the history of the championship.

Slattery emerged from a busy schedule in May with two Man-of-the-Match displays as Offaly enjoyed impressive Leinster championship victories over great rivals Westmeath and against Kildare, in the latter game attacking effectively from wing back with his blistering pace to score two important points.

Most of the attention in the hurling championship so far has focussed on the performances of Eoin Kelly. The Mullinahone star has become accustomed to the limelight since he first played senior hurling for Tipperary in 2000. Since then he has won every honour in the game including an All-Ireland championship in 2001 and four Vodafone All-Star awards.

Karol Slattery also made his championship debut for Offaly in 2000 and the following year was named Offaly senior footballer of the year. Now 26, Slattery plays with the Gracefield club with whom he has reached two Offaly finals but has yet to win a title. He has represented Leinster in the Inter-provincial series.

Paying tribute to the two players the president of the GAA Nicky Brennan said: “It has been a privilege to watch the performances of Eoin and Karol in the early stages of the championship. They have set a very high standard through their individual displays and their teamwork.”

On behalf of Vodafone, Helen Marks said the quality of the opening rounds of the championships has proven to be a tasty appetiser for the months ahead. “Our commitment at Vodafone is to provide tangible support for the players as they continue to provide priceless entertainment Sunday after Sunday. Eoin and Karol deserve our congratulations.”

No more than Karol deserves. He really has become a top notch player and has taken the captains role in his stride.

Here's hoping he'll get a chance to lift some silverware.

Well done to Karol!
A top class player and inspirational for Offaly.
It's great to see him get national recognition.

On another slightly related topic.
It think those rival GPA awards are some joke.
Mark Foley got it for last month. Best laugh I had in ages. Eoin Kelly's heroics, weren't good enough!
On a completely unrelated subject. Kelly endorses Lucozade sport, while the GPA are trying to push Club Energise. :)
DJ Carey's retirement must make Donal Óg Cusack the favourite for the June award.

Well deserved the Gracefield man! Easily the most consistent player of the championship so far.

Well Deserved. One of the most consistent pleasures when watching Offaly is seeing the shock and awe Karol Slattery causes when he first switches on the afterburners against opposition in a game - let's hope he doesn't become too well known for that shock value.
