New Book ‘Magic Memories Birr GAA Club through the lens’

Post by Plain of the Herbs »

This was published earlier this week with a book and a DVD. The book is a 240 page of A4 size which is roughly equally proportioned between text and photographs. This covers the history of hurling in Birr from the foundation of the GAA up to date, with chapters on their previous golden era of 1938-1948, St Brendan’s Park, the influence of the Presentation Brothers on hurling in the town, Brian Whelahan, football and of course on the Golden era of 1990 to date.

Written by Alan Walsh, he of Offaly Express fame, there’s a piece written on each and every Birr title win from Senior All-Ireland down to U12 level with the Birr lineout and a photograph included in almost all cases. Written in a nice brisk style, it recalls good days (obviously) and bad (starting a league semi-final with 13 men!). It is a beautiful production and all involved in its production deserve great credit.

The DVD is a series of interviews with several Birr hurlers and coaches. Perhaps the highlight is a tribute to the Late Aidan Rosney, particularly Ken Hogan’s tribute which is spine-chillingly poignant.

With sponsorships alleviation the cost, book and DVD each retail for €10, which is an absolute steal, particularly in the case of the book. Without the sponsorship it would probably cost €30, maybe more. Seriously recommended.
Pat Donegan. Signed out of respect for players and all involved with Offaly.

"Offaly's hurling is exact and abrasive: full of assurance on the ball, devoid of fumbling and slicing and sod-busting". Kevin Cashman RIP (September 1994).
