tullamore and o connor park as a venue

Post by midfield »

lot of talk on other gaa pages about the choice of tullamore as venue for the galway kilkenny game. How much does o connor park actually hold. Also i might go to the match myself and a planning to bring a team .would be travelling from the south of the county. Where would be the best place to park a bus and best route in to the ground to avoid traffic and get close to the ground quickly

Yes Kildare v Laois is set for Tullamore, according to the Leinster GAA website, with a likely cracking Minor Hurling game of significant interest as the "curtain raiser".

Its good to see Tullamore getting usage as a neutral venue.
I wonder how will it cope with a big crowd though?
Remember there hasn't been anything over 20,000 in it since the mid 80s.

We played Dublin in O'Connor Park on a miserable wet day in 1992 and were well beaten......I remember there being a huge crowd maybe more than 20,000. The old O'Connor Park was easily able to cater for 30,000. I just hope that everything goes off without any problems Saturday. Hopefuly the gates will be operated efficiently....the last this we need is a 15min delay due to hassle. It'll be a long time since we seen the scoreboard goal end packed with people.

15,000 according to this.

Tullamore has occasionally had to delay throw in where the crowd was big, in the old ground.
When Offaly played Leix in the 2003 football replay, there was a such a crowd backed up at the stiles, they eventually had to let ticket holders in via the exit gates.
Hopefully the new stand design means this sort of occurrence is a thing of the past.

That's a minor football semi-final. Unfortunately our hurlers were knocked out by Westmeath.

there was an absolute massive crowd when we played dublin in 1985, minors played wexford as a curtain raiser, but i dont think saturday will get any where near 20,000 ,probably 16,000 +

Was dublin in 92 the time the "lovable" Dubs fans were climbing in over the wall to get into the ground?
Seem to think it was around that time.
