After the unfortunate exit of our under 21's during the week, it would be nice if these lads could get past the post. On paper it doesn't strike me as one of our better minor teams in recent years, and a good chunk of that team are still available next year, but we would have said the same about our minor footballers last year, and they certainly did us proud.
In saying that, this is a very decent Carlow team. We were very fortunate to get away with a one point win when playing them already this year, and they have just as much momentum behind them as we do. This is a huge game in this competition, because if we win this we're guaranteed at least two more games - games that would certainly stand to these lads in the long run.

I've only seen Offaly Minors against Westmeath but I'd be hopeful that if we get past Carlow we'll do some damage!!
Carlow are good though. It's a tough draw and we'll have to see which team picks up the threads best after the Leaving Certicate exams.

Offaly Scorers: James Gorman (4), Diarmuid Horan (4, 3 frees), Ger Scales (2), Aaron Whelehan (2, 1 from 65), Mark Egan (2, 1 free), Daniel Currams (1), Odhran Kealey (1)
Carlow had to wait for 2 goals in the last few minutes to take the lead again and clinch this victory but in truth they were the better side all through. Padraig Amond top-scored with 2-4, the 4 points from out the field in the first half, then the two goals at the end after he had been moved into the full forward position his No. 14 Jersey predicted.
It was similar to the U-21 match in Parnell Park during the week in that Offaly looked well-prepared and some Offaly players played well but they came up short against a good team. If they'd held out to the end this Offaly team might have gone on to make an impact in further matches but it wasn't to be!
All the forwards scored from play.
The most productive Offaly forward by far was James Gorman (No. 10)who caught loads of ball cleanly and used nearly all of it very well, bagging 4 points from play.
Ger Scales (No. 12) scored two nice points and was moved to midfield in the second half where he battled hard although his lack of size told against him in the midfield exchanges.
Aaron Whelehan (No. 11) took charge of a pressure 65 near the end and pointed it. He then followed up with a point from play which looked as if it might be enough for Offaly to win.
The full forward line each scored a point from play - Mark Egan, Daniel Currams, Odhran Kealey as did Diarmuid Horan from midfield.
Only 8 wides from Offaly as against 15 scores so they were quite economical but they didn't have much goalscoring threat. Carlow led for most of the match but a late surge nosed Offaly ahead before the goals won it for Carlow.
Colin Egan looked to be injured from a very early stage even though it was the middle of the second half before he was taken off to make way for Killian Leonard.
The half back line shone especially No. 6 Brian Leonard in the first half. Del Morkam played well as did James Mulrooney. The full back line (Dunican, Wynne and Coughlan) also defended valiantly and Eoin Kelly was very cool in goals.
Let's hope that Carlow go on to rattle Kilkenny and give a good account of themselves in the All-Ireland series. They've now beaten Wexford and Offaly in the knock-out stages on the way to the Leinster Final. Good Luck to Carlow and we'll support them if they're playing before our footballers match with Wexford on Leinster Hurling Final day next week!!
