Shane Dooley set to become Offaly's top championship scorer
With 3-34 scored in his four championship games this year, Shane Dooley heads to Portlaoise poised to take over as Offaly’s all time leading championship scorer.
By my calculation, Shane has scored 14-163 (205) to date. That is six points short of Brian Carroll, who currently sits on top of the Offaly championship scoring tree with 5-194 (209).
Shane overtook his uncle, Johnny Dooley, into second slot during the match against Leix earlier this month, Johnny having ended his career with 4-191 (203). That said, Leo McGough (who is the authority on such statistics) puts Johnny at 4-188. Leo McGough also has Johnny making 34 championship appearances when I’ve got 35. And don’t be minding Wikipedia – there’s no way Johnny can have scored 4-199 as claimed by the - I've got a match-by-match breakdown.
Which or whether, well done to Shane on his consistent marksmanship and even if he doesn’t overtake Brian Carroll against Galway, he looks set to take the lead very soon and will smash the record going forward.
While I’m at it, local media (print and broadcasting) are very quick to criticize this site when a few wayward comments are made. Yet to my knowledge, none of them have bothered to research feats such as Offaly’s top all- time scorer. And they are the ones who would (should) have scoring records readily available to them. Which demonstrates the value of media such as this, and the value of freedom of speech and of hearing the opinion of the ordinary punter. And raises the question – what do those fellas be doing with their time?
Neither has the County Board's website investigated the matter. Or the so-called Supporters' Club. What do they be doing?

What do you mean by 'so called supporters club'?
Do you have a problem with Club Faithful? In my opinion they do their best in a time when there is not a huge amount to shout about and at a time when support is at a low ebb as a result.

Shane's feat was widely quoted in the media over the weekend.
Had anyone else highlighted the impending record?

I didn’t see it anywhere else anyway.
For completeness, here is the updated Offaly championship top-scorer chart, following Shane’s 1-5 yesterday. Joseph Bergin’s 1-1 against Galway (he has scored 4-7 this year) brings the Clareen man into the chart too.
(213) . . Shane Dooley . . .15-168
(209) . . Brian Carroll . . . 5-194
(203) . . Johnny Dooley . . 4-191
(162) . . Mark Corrigan . . 16-114
(151) . . Paddy Molloy . . . 25-76
(118) . . Joe Dooley . . . . 14-76
(109) . . Joseph Bergin . . . 16-61
(105) . . Pádraig Horan . . . 15-60

Re: Shane Dooley set to become Offaly's top championship sco
I'd be more of a team player myself , any record on all the frees players won to put him in this position? Records like this are irrelevant to me . Whilst it's great for him I'd much rather be talking about us playing against Kilkenny in the Leinster final and adding to our Leinster final victories records as a team.

POTH - out of interest can I ask what the list looks if we factor in the number of championship matches played by the top scorers i.e. who tops the average scoring charts ?

EiC,
List of averages here. Some would be misleading, in that Paddy Molloy (one appearance in goals, 7 in the backs) and Pádraig Horan (13 out of 42 appearances in the backs) spent a good chunk of their careers hurling in defence.
Shane Dooley – scored 213, 33 appearances, average 6.45
Paddy Molloy – scored 151, 25 appearances, average 6.04
Johnny Dooley – scored 203, 35 appearances, average 5.80
Mark Corrigan – scored 192, 36 appearances, average 5.33
Brian Carroll – scored 209, 49 appearances, average 4.26
Joseph Bergin – scored 109, 38 appearances, average 2.86
Pádraig Horan – scored 105, 42 appearances, average 2.5
Joe Dooley – scored 118, 51 appearances, average 2.31

Re: Shane Dooley set to become Offaly's top championship sco
Great thread. Interesting that Joe Dooley managed 14 championship goals in his career, I never would have thought he got as many. I wonder what Brian Carroll would have amassed if he had been on full time free taking duty for the last 5 years of his career, it may well have added another 50 or so points to his tally? Do we know what proportion of scores for each player on the list came from placed balls (including 65's & sidelines). Shane Dooley I reckon has hit a lot of 65's over and in the last couple of years has proved himself as good as any with sideline cuts.

Re: Shane Dooley set to become Offaly's top championship sco
Thanks Brack.
Regarding Joe's 14 goals, I just had a look at The Music of the Ash and I see Joe's 14 goals were scored as follows -
1984 v Galway (2), 1987 v Dublin (1), 1988 v Dublin (1), 1988 v Wexford (2), 1989 v Laois (1), 1994 v Kilkenny (1), 1994 v Limerick (1), 1995 v Wexford (1), 1997 v Meath (1), 1998 v Meath (1), 1999 v Wexford (1), 2000 v Kilkenny Leinster Final (1).
And I would have assumed Joe's entire tally came from play, but I now see he scored 0-1 from a free against Meath in 1998 and pointed a line ball against Wexford in 1999, on a day he top-scored with 1-5.
I don't have a breakdown of play / frees / 65s, and it would be a bit of work to do it. And newspapers didn't tend to publish the breakdown in the old days. Certainly you'd never split Paddy Molloy's, and possibly not Pádraig Horan's either I see Buttons has made a start on Shane Dooley's, which is to be encouraged. The HoganStand results archives section is probably the best 'one stop shop' to look up scorers since 2000.
