THE discount supermarket Lidl is recalling over 1,200 hurling helmets after the headgear failed safety tests.
The recall of the €49.99 Pro-Guard helmet comes just six weeks after the German company placed advertisements in the national media claiming that the headgear had passed the only official standard for hurling helmets, after concerns were raised by the GAA.
That advertisement also maintained that the firm would "not apologise for offering a high quality helmet at a significantly lower price than officially endorsed products".
Lidl's helmet was €25 cheaper than the Mycro helmet which is endorsed by the GAA.
But the supermarket chain placed a number of advertisements in the national media yesterday, recalling the Pro-Guard helmet, adding that customers should stop using it "with immediate effect" and return it for a full refund.
