A few thoughts on the first round of the race for Sean Robbi
I know it’s one of sport’s more overused clichés but this year’s county senior hurling championship looks like it will be the most intriguing championship in a decade, for a number of reasons.
While All-Ireland club finalists, Birr, will again start as favourites for the title, the effect a winter’s slog will have on their legs, and indeed, their hunger, remain to be seen. Given the draw, Birr are probably the only club guaranteed to make the knockout stages. The records continue to line up to be broken by the Birrmen. Last year they became the first club to win seven titles in a decade; this year they aim to equal St. Rynagh’s record of winning ten titles in twelve years. Tullamore and Lusmagh will covet the second qualifying place in that group though Drumcullen’s young stars will be buoyed by their run with Kilcormac Killoughey Gaels in the recent under 21 championship.
The draw has thrown up a group of death where three clubs with aspirations of ultimate success - Kilcormac/Killoughey (last year’s finalists), Coolderry (who came close to winning two years ago) and St. Rynagh’s are all drawn in the one group. One of those will be eliminated at the group stage. With scoring difference to count where teams finish level, every score will be vital. Something like a seven point win would give a team a vital edge, while a defeat by such a margin could be fatal. None of those three can be sure of qualifying while possibility of Shamrocks taking a scalp cannot be discounted either.
Kinnitty would have been warm favourites for the top spot in their group – until Clareen’s historic Under-21 win. Sunday’s clash of those two neighbouring clubs will be watched with interest. Last year, the Clareenmen lost their three group matches by an aggregate of eight points.
Of the eighteen pairings in the group stages, nine are repeats of clashes from last year, again adding spice.
At this stage, forecasting the outcome of the group stage is impossible, for a number of reasons- there’s no genuine form guide to go on. Form in the league competition can be taken with a pinch of salt, though St. Rynagh’s and Shamrocks have qualified for the quarter finals of the Leinster club league, though in different divisions. Other clubs have had some decent results also.
One thing is sure- the loser of the ’Rynagh’s v Shamrocks, Lusmagh v Drumcullen and Belmont v Shinrone ties will find it almost impossible to qualify for the knockout stage.
After this weekend, the championship will be put on hold until the county team has departed the All-Ireland race, which will most likely be in mid-July. The weekend so far . . .
The county hurling championship burst to life around eight o’clock last night with Tullamore’s sensational 3-9 to 0-15 win over Birr at Moystown. It was Francis Kerringan’s bullet of a goal from a tight angle in the last minute which gave them this win, their first over Birr since 1994, and the musical car-horns heralded the win as their supporters faced for Clonony afterwards.
Tullamore were always in the hunt and though they were 5-2 in arrears, Kevin Martin’s goal on about the 25-minute mark when he caught, turned and blasted a bullet of a shot past Mullins brought them back into it.
They went score for score for the first twenty of the second half before thereal drama began. Dylan Hayden scored two sublime points to give Birr a three-point lead,. Shane Dooley blasted a 20m free to the net to level it, Hayden hit his third point, another beauty to give Birr the lead again, Dooley again levelled from a ’65 and then, with time seemingly running out, Kerrigan collected a long delivery, turned to his favoured left side and blasted past Mullins from a seemingly impossible angle.
Earlier, St. Rynagh’s were never in trouble against Shamrocks, winning 1-12 to 1-7. Despite Derek Molloy’s early goal, a superb strike from 25m out, Shamrocks, who have gone backwards from last year, were never in the hunt once John Ryan capitalised on a mix-up between goalkeeper and full back under a dropping ball and the Shannonbridge man scrambled to the net. Ryan and Gary Kelly did most of the scoring for ’Rynagh’s for whom Fergus Shortt at full back and debutant Tiernan Martin at corner back hurled well.
The scoreline may be deceptive as Shamrocks scored the last three points of the game. While they were never in any danger of losing, ’Rynagh’s have much to improve on. Then again, poor pre-summer form has never bothered them particularly.
On Friday evening last in Mountbolus, Drumcullen thought they had beaten Lusmagh by a point only to be denied that win by a referee’s scorekeeping error. Twice in the second half Drumcullen fell three points in arrears but got back into it with goals, the first from Ray Quegan, the second a 20m Conor Gath free. Lusmagh, who looked the sharper, fitter and more skilled and for whom Paul Bermingham hit four points and Gary Kelly three from play were unable to turn that advantage into scores though. Don't know if they'll object or not but there's nowhere to go with it even if they do. Didnt make friday nights game so apologies to those four teams for this.
Team Performance of the weekend: Has to be Tullamore for their self-belief and never say die spirit to overcome the Leinster Club Champions
Individual Performances of the weekend: 1)Brian Carroll scored 1-6 from play to steer Coolderry to undeserved win over K/K
2) Dylan Hayden bagged 0-5 from play to single handedly keep Birr in a game that finally got away from them
3)Andy Mcredmond helped himself to 0-4 from play off last weekends u-21 man of the match Eanna Murphy.
Team of the Weekend
1) Damien Fox (Tullamore) Very assured in everything he did and gave some great short passed to set up attacks.
2) Could do with some help here!!!
3) Ger Healion (K/K) Caught some monster balls and was dominant. If only he had a corner back to his left hand side!!
4)Alan Corcoran (Coolderry) Did well on a variety of forwards including Ciaran Slevin
5) Nigel Mannion (Tullamore) Had a super game for the Blues driving them on
6) ?? Kearney (Shamrocks) Had a massive 2nd half in battle with John Ryan and i thought he never shirked any challenges.
7) Colm Cassidy (K/K) For his three pointed frees. Should have been put on Brian Carroll
Conor Mahon (K/K) If he's battle with Joe Brady was a boxing match he would have won by TKO. With those long strides he'd be a nightmare to mark.
9) Colm Coughlan (Kinnitty) Oozed class and added six pointed fress to the mix
10) Stephen Egan (Tullamore) Pacey and direct, got some nice scores when the town needed them most. No left side though!

Any one stand out for Rynaghs i feel they have a good chance of beating both Coolderry and KK.
Also Kinnity seem to be going well have a nice young with a few experienced guys, this years championship could be a cracker

banagher poor enough saturday night ,jon ryan being their best player tells its own story ,would`ve liked to see their full back on county panel and given a chance as he was solid last year and the other night .tullamore no. 7 had a cracking game throughout ,with all the messing behind the scenes the birr lads hardly bothered .about 4 of those young lads let us down leading into all ireland and why some were allowed wear the jersey saturday night can`t understand (hayden one of them )
.kinnitty going to be dark horses ,with a bit of luck should have been in final last year ,but their style of hurling was great to watch a lot of first time ground hurling and team work ,they won`t be far away again this year .as for k/k don`t know what to make of them ,hit some bad wides in first half and with better team work should nearly had the game won by then .2 or 3 times the no. 10 was through but took the wrong options .eammon lee was ,i thought one of their best players who should be on that county panel over some of the others ,as for mahon hes a fierce bad stricker of a ball ,swear he thinks he`s carring a shovel .in fairness to clareen too many young lads in vital positions and bergin a massive loss to them .3 months to the next round of matches as everyone agreed in rath yesterday a bit over the top

Delighted to see Andy McRedmond hurling well again, but not 2put 2much of a dampner on his performance, in fairness to Eanna Murphy he's still only minor! Kinnity were very impressive, and while Clareen were always going to struggle after the previous week's feat, not to mention the loss of Joe Bergin, it was Kinnity's style of hurling which impressed a lot of people!Very economical, crisp and direct! Overall I'd count it as good a week-end of hurling fixtures as we've had in years! Good tight battles, with loads of surprises (T'more obvious winners here!) and with Coolderry's last gasp goal to seal off a fine weekend!
KK looked very good for long spells against Coolderry, who were shockingly over-reliant on Carroll! Their positioning of Brady and Murray midfiled backfired big time, with Mahon and Lee coming out on top! But in fairness to Murray he stayed goin and scored 1-1 with 2mins to go!
Birr were in self-destruct mode, with no manager, little interest etc. Baz bit harsh on Hayden, he carried Birr on Saturday evening! Breeder obviuoly didnt see the ball with the low sun at the end, because he could have caught it was going that slow (not messing!) But credit to Tullamore, they battled hard and probably deserved something from the game! Shane Keely wa the no10 for Tullamore, great speed, but as already stated no left side at all! Still not convinced by Watkins, only 6months ago he was an Intermediate hurler (then Birr pub talk got him a run with Offaly seniors which lasted one training session!)
