"as regards cillian kiely he is generally regarded (outside of offaly) as the best and most well known hurler offaly have. personally id agree that hes a huge loss to the offaly hurling team".

Yes......but Lord Jaysus ......its his choice, move on. Unless ye want us all to buy a bucket load of marietta biscuits and a barrel of mi wadi and call around to the house to convince him to come back..leave it alone!!!

Good run out today. Dublin are a good bit ahead of offaly for obvious reasons. Offaly did well to be 4 ahead at half time and should have been 7 ahead if the goal was allowed instead of the penalty that was awarded.
One major failing for offaly is quite simple there are no big men. The team looks very small and will need a few years to build up the required conditioning. Over all ,should go well in the championship and with a bit of luck win it. League will be rough, very rough.

Not far off a full strength Dublin side yesterday by all accounts so it is a good performance. We have lots of lads only learning at this level and they have to do it very quickly. Our team is young energetic and reasonably mobile and that is what you need. No point having big strong strapping lads that are great under high ball but can't move. Them days are over. If these lads get conditioned properly over next two to 3 years we will compete at Liam McCarthy in the next 2/3 years. Need to target likes of Laois Wexford Dublin and Clare next and get some wins off these to bring us to next level over next year or two. Huge improvement from where we were only 3 years ago.

Would agree with this. Left Birr yesterday feeling very positive. Some brilliant scores and link up play at times. Donal Burke did very well for Dublin as did Danny suttcliffe.

Looking forward to the league albeit under no illusions about how tough it will be.

I have to say our level is our level we were good yesterday but were short 4 or 5 lads.

David king is not a corner back and young screeney certainly isnt.
Pity Stephen Connolly and Oisin Murphy are not in with them as I feel they would be ideal man marker for inter county and would be the best corner backs in the county.
.
overall a decent performance.

Random thoughts on Offaly v Dublin

Post by Plain of the Herbs »

It was encouraging to see Offaly willing to gather possession and being comfortable with that possession.

That was facilitated by Dublin’s plan of conceding the short puckouts to Offaly in the first half. Perhaps Dublin expected Offaly go give the ball away at the first opportunity, but Offaly have clearly been working on their short puckouts.

It was great to see another member of the full-back line taking the correct line to take the ball from the ‘first receiver’ (sorry, I don’t know what else to label the man who collects the short puckout), and more refreshing to see a ‘second receiver’ taking the ball up another line. The move often broke down because someone who standing stationery took a pass, or the pass was misplaced or was dropped. But that’s something that can be worked on.

By definition, if Dublin have pulled their full-forward line out beyond the '45, they are going to outnumber Offaly between the '45s. Therefore, Offaly need to go down the flanks where there might be space, rather than taking it down the middle.

Long puckouts are not an option for Offaly. As evidenced by pretty much every puckout that went long and was easily collected in the air by a Dublin defender.

Dublin changed plan at the first water break and pushed up on Offaly’s puckout. Conor Clancy was still able to find a defender during the second quarter, but once Dublin pushed right up on Offaly after half-time the game was up.

There were two different games being played in Birr yesterday. The movement of Dublin’s players into space was an education. I wouldn’t be a Nolan fan, but his puckouts to the flanks made his men outright favourites to gain possession.

That said, Offaly did come to grips with Dublin, and won a reasonable share of Dublin’s restarts that were directed low and down the middle. That took a lot of concentration and communication on Offaly’s part. But that’s what they’re on the field for.

David King’s suitability as a corner-back has been raised earlier. But I think King fits the role. A corner-back has to be comfortable in possession, able to take a pass or a puckout, and to lay off a pass. With opposition playing with two in the full-forward line, there is room for a ‘hurling’ defender. If the opposition’s full-forward line is being fed a constant supply of quality ball, somebody somewhere isn’t doing their job. Anyway, Barry Nash isn’t where he is to play as an ‘out and out’ corner-back.

Dublin still had loads of gears to go through, which they did only momentarily. As I said, they were playing a different game.

With Offaly starting with 11 of the Christy Ring Final starting 15, it’s not as if there are another five lads out there waiting in the wings. Oisín Kelly is an enforced change, you’d expect Ciarán Burke will come back in, and some of the forwards might rotate. So yesterday's, more or less, is the team that will face Galway in a fortnight.

First time watching the hurlers for a while, but have to say I was fairly happy. We got to grips with Dublins movement for the second quarter and Offaly worked the ball through the lines, (no major cries of "Drive it" but definite groans when possession lost trying to do the right thing).
We struggled on our puck out when going long throughout and need better movement out the field.
Dublin squeezed up big time in the second half.
The disappointing part is that there were a number of good balls put into the full forward line in the second half and we were cleaned out by the full back line completely for the last 20 minutes. This limited any chance of creating a goal, and whilst the game has moved away from goals, it must still be an objective. Granted a lot of the ball was straight in, whereas Dublin delivered a number of brilliant diagonal balls in the second half.
I would hope that our forwards will be better suited to the dry sod.

But as long as we are learning and given the number of regulars that Dublin had and the experience they unleashed off the bench, this would have been the toughest test for the hurlers for a couple of years.

Best of luck in the league, they deserve our support, patience as they are working hard at trying to evolve our game, and the physicality of the game at this level along with the speed of movement will be a challenge, but coming out of this league, the lads have to regroup and take a ferocious effort into the Joe Mcdonagh as Antrim and Kerry will be tough cookies.
