"Tullamore can like or lump it in my opinion.

"I’d love to see the county board quietly sound out Birr, see what they can offer with regards the hosting of matches, and break the lease of their agreement with Tullamore."

Jaysus lads lot of arguments here in this one comment.

1) Tullamore have a lease and legally its due to be paid. But that is a negotiation piece and that is ongoing and hopefully will get resolved.
2) Birr would gladly host matches, but wait, crowd limits, pitch not available at key times due to weather.

And break the agreement with Tullamore, what would they do? They could well end up selling it for millions to developers and all the club levies gone down the pan. PLUS OCP and the naming rights has brought big money to County Board...you cant just throw that up too?? And future revenue?

Facts: Tullamore own the ground, lease agreed, but Tullamore need to give leeway to Offaly CB due to Covid..common sense.

Club levies are to pay back the development of the stand and terrace etc, or pay the lease, whichever way you want it.

As regards Tullamores contribution to Offaly GAA and teams, that is another argument, but nothing to do with the lease.

Damien is from the Portumna club, Co. Galway, as per Offaly GAA website. Any other changes on the Executive?

Damien Coleman looks to be very good appointment as operations manager.

He has a wealth of experience in gaa. He would also have been a very good appointment as coach or games manager.

See two jobs advertised for offaly. Operations manager and a administrative role. Recently enough appointed county games manager is moving on also. Looks like Damien coleman is moving on also less than 6 months in the role. Gpo in edenderry also moving on. Have the gpos been replaced yet that moved on from the Birr/clareen/drumcullen and the rynaghs club? A lot of change happening.

Damien Coleman is still employed by Connacht GAA and is on fixed term contract to Offaly GAA, I suspect the plan was always that he would step in short term and put plans in place and help with the recruitment of a successor

Yeah, one year contract which apparently been cut short. Don't think too many plans were made or put in place. Had at least 6 month's to run.

Wasn't much talk about Damian Colman after he started but was announced as appointment for the role.

Why appoint a fella to do a job as recruiting for his successor as someone has mentioned??
Or put plans in place for someone else to be appointed to deliver.

To be fair its a fairly wide brief. Being in OCP and Faithful Fields on match days would put the heeby jeebies up many Offaly people never mind someone who was tasked with all other deliverables outlined in the job spec. May as well buy a sleeping bag for OCP from the looks of it!

This is my point, in the last 18 months there has been huge staff turnover. Gpos moved into Gda roles. Gdas into county manager whose now left. Operations manager 6 months into role, now leaving. Performance gda with development squads has aslo left.

Very hard to replace staff, so why are they leaving in the first place is the question I'd ask. The edenderry GPO has been there long term and is going travelling which is fair enough. Not been negative, just observing a very unsettled coaching and games. Very difficult to implement a long term plan with staff turnover like that. But sure the u20s are flying.!!

That makes no sense, you appoint a fella to help recruit another high calibre individual?
The GAA at Crke Park can do that. and then expect a person to come in and role out someone elses plan??
Doesn't stack up

Back in the day I applied for one of these administrator roles, and there's no doubt that a huge part of the issue is the fact that the GAA still runs on the fuel of volunteer energy, and (rightly so) there is a lot of awareness from those recruiting for these sort of positions that they don't want to be in a position whereby someone starts getting paid for a job, and volunteers step back as a result, feeling resentful that they never got paid, or don't get paid, for putting in every bit as much energy.

While in practical terms, the reason why gigs like this are paid instead of volunteer is that there has to be a level of accountability and responsibility attached which you simply can't expect of a volunteer. However I've often suspected that either consciously or subconsciously, part of the "solution" to this conundrum is that they make the paid for gig so broad and all-encompassing that you essentially have to do 40 hours, and maybe put another 20 or 30 hours to go with it, in order to do the job right. Certainly when it comes to the role that Damien Coleman is now vacating, it would take two full-time people to do it right. Essentially, even the most devoted volunteer would look at his job spec and go "feck me, that's a lot for one man to take on".

Moreover, the different sides to the job have no natural overlap. The ideal candidate would be a qualified accountant, an experienced project manager, and a skilled and natural coach as well.

I say this without any idea of how to solve the problem of course. The issue about not making volunteers feel hard done by is a real one, and obviously there's also a huge risk in getting in someone who's not the most industrious or motivated figure in the world, and then you're stuck with them. Conversely, it's a monster role, and in a world where a qualified accountant with a bit of cut about them, or an experienced project manager can command salaries close enough to the 100k mark, you can understand why a lot of people that might be able to do the job well would take a look at the spec, and the money on offer, and decide that it's not worth the grief. That leaves you with the coaching community, and if that's your main asset, you'd be in over your head pretty quickly in the gig.
Kevin Egan. Signed out of respect for players and all involved with Offaly.
