You’d have to be happy with the heart the lads showed.
We lost but no shame in that.
Well done to all.
Wont be long until 2021

Great performance from the lads young Farrell was on fire and is hopefully the future of Offaly football. Niall Mc was quiet enough today by his standards. We were out played in midfield and with the Mark every team need 6ft 4 ball winners. The ref did make a few harsh calls against us but three missed goal chances is what ultimately cost us in the end. Interesting to note the score line 36 scores in normal time compared to the muck in Munster. Maughan deserves great credit for his work with lads, we are competitive again.

yes, I would be the first to be on here giving out normally when Offaly dont even try to play, but credit where it is due, Offaly played very very well this evening, we certainly showed we were not there to make up the numbers. The real loosing of the game overall was not winning our own kickouts on a regular basis...once Kildare won the ball, it took an eternity to get back possession. When we couldnt win it in the middle then we started going down the wings, precariously close to sideline on most occasions, never a comfortable place to be.Niall MC was quiet enough by his standards, but I thought we abandned kicking in the high ball to him, he was not going to win every ball, but he did win one or two and it was dangerous when we did. Once we stopped, Kildare were happy I would say. I have no problem saying that referee done us little or no favours, some of his calls were startling. It was so harsh on one call, I thought Colm Doyle would see red (or second yellow actually) and I could understand why. Havent we some sort of history with David McGoldrick as referee?...we missed our goal chances today, very good saves and we deserved one or two definitely, but we didnt get them.

Joe O'Connor was brought on, he is a good footballer I know, I didnt see any of that this evening, I think he was brought on for Jordan Hayes, whom must have had the niggling injury from last week, as there was abit about him when he was on field, and I think he was disapointed at being called ashore, but we have to respect management on this one. One part I didnt like about our performance, was with the minutes ticking and we needing scores, we played like we were in the lead, over cautious in possession, kicking it backwards on occassions even and we 4 points down in injury time...I cannot fathom what does be going through players heads..on that note, Cork did the very same against Kerry in their game, and while I was delighted for Cork to win, they were so so lucky, if they lost by a point, they would only have themselves to blame for not going for an equaliser when deep in the Kerry half...
Anyway, back to Offaly, we are done for another year, Maughan done enough in last 2 games to probably deserve another term if he opts to stay and the county board can afford him..the question I would ask, is, why didnt we play football in Division 3 and at least challenge for promotion?? Another year, Niall Mc and few more will be a year older, stronger teams getting relegated to Division 3 each year, making it very difficult to get out of for the likes of Offaly, but a bit of positivity and we can certainly challenge...whether Maughan will be there now is the question...

Great to show what Offaly can do in football if they play to their potential. If we got a few big midfielders, and can bang in the goals we can reap the benefits. I am not sure what John Maughan will decide about his future.

It was a good effort from Offaly. Defensive football wouldn't come naturally to this team, so they tried to attack. Losing, but feeling your team tried to use its weapons to best effect is some consolation.
You can't help thinking of the injured or unavailable players that might have helped around the middle of the pitch where Kildare had the upper hand.

There were three Offaly goal chances that might have swung momentum, though Kildare would have had enough time to respond.
Offaly were also helped by poor Kildare shooting - a ton of wides and shots dropping short.

An upset was a slight possibility throughout, however I never got a great hunch that Offaly would power into the lead.
Just like the Tipp game 3 weeks ago, Offaly didn't let the deficit grow too big, but crucially never got ahead.

This was also a John Maughan vs. Jack O'Connor rematch of the 2004 All Ireland. That day Kerry unravelled Mayo early on by pumping in high balls that the Mayo full back line didn't deal with. Kildare started off with that tactic for the first 10 minutes before changing tack.

With the whistle Coldrick was fine until the incident where Donnellan took Colm Doyle out of it with a frontal barge. He gave a couple of soft Kildare frees late on to seal the win.

Offaly have shown some progress in the last two years. There is more to done to make them a team that can push for D2 promotion.
For over a decade now they've remained one bad managerial appointment from Division 4 relegation. Can that be improved on in 2021?

There are reasons to be upbeat with the talent that is coming through. Cian Farrell confirmed he is a real prospect and other players have shown improvement.

you nailed it all there on the head with all you said..Maughan, I dont know, maybe if he stays but someone would want to have a word in his ear that go for Division 3, if we dont make it we dont make it, over cautious, finishing mid table is not doing Offaly any good..play your best team in all games, get a few wins together and then maybe against bottom of the table give some of the rest of the panel a start maybe..I think we will have a different manager somehow, I just feel it in my bones

Very concise summation by BNM on Sunday's game. Offaly have some exciting talent in the panel. I hope that pays dividends soon. Like FairPlay I would like to see Offaly have a right cut at promotion from Div3 next year. Playing the type of football seen on Sunday can benefit Offaly, rather than the sterile defensive approach used before.
Not sure what John Maughan will do, if he wants another year I would give it to him.

With 2021 not far away, preparations will be starting for the year ahead.
I am of the opinion that we can do better as a senior football squad and management. I have openly questioned Maughan, but I am not a person who has something in my head and runs with that idea or train of though no matter what.
I don't like the way he has handled individual players, I do think that has been very poor, and in truth I believe we are worse off because of this. I do think that he has a charisma and a confidence about himself which in many ways helps our lads, so that is a positive. he has very much provided a mixed bag over his two years in charge.

Positives:
Gave a great battling performance against meath last year in Navan
Wont a few qualifier games last year
Gave Kildare socks of it this year

Negatives:
Third from bottom in division 3 the last two years.
Best players in Offaly not on the panel.
Defensively vulnerable still , conceded 20 pts in our last 3 championship matches, (Laois , Carlow, Kildare )

Its been very much a mixed bag I could see why he would be kept on, and he has a good rapport with media .
I would prefer a change but that's my own personal opinion.
The safe option is to let John take a third year.

Was a lot more positive viewing than possibly any of the league games this year.
There is no doubt that the team has potential, but as a poster pointed out we have conceded 20 pts in our last 3 championship matches.
Likewise with the Tipp match when we got back near them, Kildare were able to pull away.
Paddy Dunican was a lot more assured on the kick out but for an outfield player he looks a bag of nerves coming up the field. Nailed a good free. But despite much good work by the backs we are still being opened up to easily with late runners, and width. Midfield has been a struggle, like to see Cathal Donoghue or Bill Carroll...or Aaron Leavy geta bit of a run here. Eoin Carroll should be able to make an impact here too, as I think he's not a back.

Maughan has come in at a time when no one would have been interested in the team and has done a good job in getting a decent panel together. But we should be a stronger proposition now. Duignan would be a good chairman to work with, there is raw talent starting to come through from decent u20 and minor teams. The question is who would be the appointment? Or would John Maughan be able to start the process of blooding some new talent into the team and continue through next year given that its close to the end of 2020.
Cost of mgt team will come into play as finance is going to be in a tough situation in 2021! It will be interesting to see the format, has that been decided yet?

My view is that he didn't show enough ambition with some of the younger players and has stuck with 20 or so players over the last 2 years. We don't need wholesale change but there are a couple of players who are too comfortable within the team.

Kildare have had some fantastic talent coming through and at times were very good the other day. A few of their players looked a little undercooked, will be interesting to see how they fare out against Meath who are no world beaters.

What did ye think of Westmeath? My view is that for Cooney and Pascal the aim of the game is to secure another year and damage limitation against the Dubs. Thought they had the forwards and midfield to have a good go at Dublin but were more interested in keeping the score down, so Dublin waltzed home. Laois will have a cut at them I'd say but Dubs will stroll it, and by then will be purring nicely for a test against Meath or Kildare.

Anyway, thanks to our Offaly players and management who committed to the cause and hopefully will see ye all back in 2021.

Just a note to recognise the performance of Neil Flynn also, and sympathy to him and his family on their bereavement. His father would have been a proud man with the performance of free taking. It didn't help us! but only fair to recognise that in light of the tough few days he wouldve gone through.

Where has Shane Tierney gone. To be honest, I don’t know too much about him, but he seemed to be the stand out forward on the u21 a couple of years ago.

Maybe someone on here that is closer to him might know better.

Shane is off the football panel since 2019, apparently. Don't know the full story, last time I saw he was playing soccer with Tullamore. Shane was a useful forward when he was with Offaly, and Daingean.

I think shane tierney along with joe maher did an interview regarding not being on the panel and contacting management looking for clarification or something along them lines. its hard to see either getting back in there when john is in charge. I am led to believe michael brazil is gone , can anybody confirm? the two boys interview seems so long alo now with everything that has happened in the meantime, covid and no sport etc. i would defnitley beat the drum that the best players shoud be in there and have done, and i know people get annoyed and say lets focus on who is there and in truth i do appreciate that view piont
with gun to my head the only player not on the panel that would defnitly improve the current situation would be nigal dunne based on the fact he has played at this level for a long time, and played well, scored well etc.
the thing with joe is that i believe he would defnitly help the situation but i suppose he is heading on 28 and has had no evidence or body of work at intercounty level. he has been absolutly brilliant for ferbane and is a really good footballer.
shane tierney was a standout underage player and he was an exciting prospect. very good for the vincents underage teams that won quiet a bit.
brazil does a few years and takes a step back from it i know he didnt play in 15 and maybe last year so it mght not be a permanent break for him. hes a strong lad.

bill carroll looks the most exciting prospect at present, he was brilliant for cappincur and should be afforded a greater oppurtunity in terms of game time going forward.

if john stays which is most likely we need to go for div 3 next year. play like we can when we are really at it.

Hmmmmm.
Kildare were shocking bad today. Totally aimless for the last 45 minutes of that Meath match.
Offaly never realistically looked like winning last Sunday against what now turns out to be a poor outfit.
Meath gobbled up the goal chances again today whereas our boys lost their wood when presented with the same type opportunities 7 days ago.

Regardless of who is over Offaly next year there can be only one goal. That is finishing either 1st or 2nd in division 3.
No more of this bringing in a blast of new lads and trying out different stuff in the first 2 or 3 games.
Nope, the only way forward is go at each like league game like they are knockout matches and play the strongest team available. It'll mean playing Niall McNamee every game assuming he's in.This squad of players have made NO progress if you ask me over the last 5 years. A collective decision has to be made about making a push to the next level and players need to buy into it.

Last week also showed how badly missed a specialist long range point kicker like Joe Maher. Could all sides put the BS aside and bring him on board.
Progress can't be really measured by championship progress because if the Dubs get ya they'll give the shite out you so the league has to the goal.
Meath have 12 goals in 2 outings now but I suspect they'll go into their shell like Laois and Westmeath and try and keep the score down next Saturday night in the Leinster final.
