Páidí Ó Sé - 28 years of bitterness and delusion

Post by turk »

From the Sunday Independent

I, like any other member of the 1982 Kerry team, can identify totally with the impact of all this on the Kilkenny team's mental disposition. Kilkenny didn't hurl on the day and, to be fair to them, Tipperary did, and fully deserved to win unlike Offaly in 1982, who might have deserved a draw, but were certainly not emphatic winners.

the only question it raised in my mind was that i saw the 1985 Kerry & Dublin teams organising a session etc, did the 19880-1982 Kerry & Offaly teams ever meet up / socialise like these Kerry Dublin teams / Meath Dublin 1991 teams, or did stopping the 5 in a row get in the way of that ?

A pity if it did.

Offaly 82 team have been too busy patting themselves on the back to socialise with Kerry!!!
In fairness, what did he say out of the way? That Offaly were not emphatic winners? Sure thats true, we dont care, 1 point was great. The fact that he is bitter makes him a bad loser, but what successful team is a good loser.
I didnt read the whole article but from what I have seen, I would be more disappointed if I was a Tipp man. He says Kilkenny never hurled, they hurled well enough, but Tipp were super on the day, and were super last year. They should get all the credit for the day, and this Kilkenny team will ultimately be seen as the best hurling team ever, as the Kerry team were seen in football.
And if it sticks in Paidis craw, then mighty! Hope it chokes Micko!

Will Kerry ever grow up, and get that massive chip off their green ang gold shoulders!. Offaly on that day, forget the margin, we won.
Of more serious concern is that we faded from the scene after that, one Leinster SFC, in 1997. Why did we go off the radar so much?
Kerry regrouped and won 3 in arow , 1984to 1986, and added more All Irelands, after that.

I suppose the answer to the question is that that Offaly team was nearing the end of its life-cycle anyway. Remember it had taken them three years to beat Dublin and three more years to beat Kerry.

I wonder if Offaly had beaten Dublin in 1979 would they have beaten Kerry a year or two sooner. We’ll never know, but it’s worth pondering. Roscommon were good then (won 4 Connacht titles in a row, won the NFL in '79, beating Offaly in the semi-final) and they too should have beaten the Dubs in ’79.

The complacency in 1983 cost that Offaly team dear and Matt’s car crash tore the heart out of them. As we saw last week, the hunger to win one trumps the hunger to win five.

Reading between the lines there can be no arguing that they we ever so close in 82. Perhaps this made the loss 'tougher to take' in his opinion. Sure the comment gets our attention, but I don't think his intent was to have a go at us.
