Colleges Football

Post by Lone Shark »

Seeing as we have one for the hurling, may as well include the football as well.....

Was in Longwood for the vocational semi on Monday. Despite on paper not having the strength of last year, you'd still have to say that it's a very decent Gallen team. Phelan and Keenaghan may be gone, but Paul Deeley is still there causing havoc, and they've got a few useful additions to the lineup from this years U-16 championship side in Ferbane.

Much like last year, it's a well drilled side that moves the ball well, and a lot of it's strength focussed in the full forward line. However winning by 2-14 to 0-5 over Baltinglass and 2-13 to 0-7 over Drogheda hasn't tested them under pressure, and I would get the suspicion that they could crack a bit if every chance became vital. On Monday they managed to rack up that tally despite not scoring between the 8th minute of the first half and twelfth minute of the second half. They cut loose after the second goal, but until then looked vulnerable as the forwards weren't really playing as a unit.

As a county we could really do with one of our schools putting up a good show, and seeing as Ballymahon have so far beaten Clara by 14 points and Tullamore by a worrying 21 points, one would hope that Ferbane do a little better in the final.

On the plus side, there are lot less Shannonbridge lads on the starting fifteen this year as well - four as opposed to seven. A very positive step.
