Defending champions Dublin lost their provincial crown in disappointing circumstances in last night's Erin Leinster U-21 hurling semi-final at Parnell Park.

Dublin featured five of the team that lost out to Wexford in the senior replay at Croke Park on Sunday and certainly Kilkenny by contrast looked the fresher.

They raced into a five-point lead after six minutes with Colin Fennelly, Nicky Cleere, Paddy Hogan and his brother Richie Hogan all on target.

Paul Ryan eventually pointed to break Dublin's duck on eight minutes. But disaster struck for the Metropolitans when Richie Hogan raced down the left flank before shooting into the corner.

Dublin, who had to rely mainly on the free-taking of Kevin O'Reilly for the rest of the half, lost further ground with Fennelly, Mulhall and Richie Hogan adding scores to leave the visitors 1-12 to 0-5 ahead at the break.

Dublin introduced two rising stars after the break, David Treacy at full forward and Shane Durkin at right half forward. But Richie Hogan continued to pick off points for the visitors and by midway through the second half Kilkenny led 1-18 to 0-7.

The final quarter, though quiet enough, saw Dublin finish with a flourish with Declan O'Dwyer finding the back of the net three minutes from time.
