Relegation issues
I don’t know how the ‘Daily Cork’ defines ‘constant tweaking’. This is the eleventh year of the current system with two groups in division 1. While there have been some changes such as reducing the number of counties from fourteen to twelve and introducing the now defunct ‘second phase’ system used ...

Re: Expectation from the NHL this year?
Aweflee, I wasn’t aware of it at all until a Carlow fella posted something of that effect on the gaaboard some weeks ago. Even then I thought nothing of it. It was only last week that I was looking up the GAA’s official site looking up dates for this summer’s qualifiers when I saw a menu for NHL det...

Fifteen days to save Offaly hurling.
Offaly have struggled for scores in their previous two matches in this year’s NHL, scoring 2-8 and 3-9 against Tipperary and Galway respectively. At the very least I would like to see Offaly being more creative up front, perhaps scoring something like fifteen or sixteen scores. The day is promised w...

Re: Reprieve for St. Mary's
I see Ciaran Groome is now on the inter-county hurling list. Where’s he from and what experience has he? I don’t recall him refereeing any senior club matches.

Managers, selectors, bibs and stuff
I must admit I know nothing about Dunloy’s current team, so I’m not going to do any kind of an analysis. That said, Birr will be keeping an anxious watch on the weather forecast. The Clones pitch will likely be heavy and sticky, and will be a great leveller on Sunday. Antrim hurling is on a roll at ...

My thoughts on Offaly v Galway yesterday
Offaly hurlers’ draw with Galway yesterday maintains the longest unbeaten home record in division 1 of the NHL but the wait continues for Offaly’s first ever win over top 9 opposition at O’Connor Park. This result scarcely seemed possible when Offaly had to endure a torrid second quarter when only f...

Re: Birr GAA club planning application
Sorry to bump up am old topic but I see Birr GAA club have a planning application in this week's Tribune for permission to build terracing either side of the stand, at the town end and the 'road' side of the ground. Looks like SBP will be closed for some time yet and I'll have to get used to travell...

Alan Kelly
I wasn’t going to come out of my winter hibernation until the hurling resumed in earnest but I want to clear something up here. I recall Alan Kelly played championship hurling with Dublin against Wexford in 1992. Kelly was a Kilmacud Crokes clubman by then. While his father was a regular umpire for ...

Umpires and stormy days
I've watched that incident on television again. Mullins stepped two yards outside the small square when pucking out into the gale (in fact he was on the line when he threw up the ball to hit it) and the umpires raised their hands. If I was doing umpire in conditions like that I'd be lenient with the...

O'Connor Park and other places
I know what ye're saying but it would make no sense to me to fix a possible Intermediate final between Ballyskenagh and Killavilla for O'Connor Park. Several rural hurling clubs have successully hosted inter and junior finals over the years and have a good operation in place for stewarding such even...

Any significant motions passed?
Please tell me Kilcormac's proposal to have all hurling finals played in O'Connor Park failed. I couldn't face another autumn driving across that bog road.

A question for ye.
We had this debate before the start yesterday. Would you have played wih or against the wind in the first half if ye were captain of either side yesterday? Personally I'd always prefer to have the wind in my favour in the second half when the oter team have 'posted their innings' so-to-speak, and yo...

Re: Birr vs Ballyboden St. Enda's
I watched it a number of times. It’s difficult to tell as, while the Ballyboden forward had a new hurl, Watkins had an older one and you can’t make out if the ball struck Watkins’ hurl in the darkness. Macdara MacDonnacha was convinced it hit Watkins’ hurl on the way out. Time was up anyway as it ha...
