Re: Offaly Senior A Hurling Championship 2023
That’s incorrect. If a team uses 20 players in this year’s senior championship 18 of them MUST play senior next year. That gives scope for 2 players to be “regraded”.

This has been in place for at least 5 years. Why the sudden interest?
It clearly benefits the bigger population bases by the by.
For example telling Lusmagh and Kilcormac/Killoughey you have to name 18 players who can only play at the highest grade is not the same thing!

Frankthetank is right. It wouldn't be unusual for Lusmagh to use just 17 or 18 of 19 Senior players in a year.
I notice most Senior A clubs used three subs last Friday evening. Lusmagh used none.
The old system where seven players were regraded suited the smaller clubs better. I could be wrong, but I suspect the change came in response to Tullamore using 30 players on their Senior hurling team about six years ago.

The sudden interest because it came up in conversation recently I don't hold too much objection to it to be honest but I didn't notice it before but it's obviously topical this year with the K/K situation and it's not passed down from GAA HQ.Plain of the Herbs wrote: ↑Tue Jul 11, 2023 6:58 pm Frankthetank is right. Also it has occurred to me as mentioned by POTH that yes although I mentioned K/K previously it is actually the smaller clubs ,who maybe have a few players coming through and potentially a few hangers on in there late 30s who need replacing.

I never knew this POTH. What was the rationale for this do you know?Plain of the Herbs wrote: ↑Tue Jul 11, 2023 6:58 pm Frankthetank is right. It wouldn't be unusual for Lusmagh to use just 17 or 18 of 19 Senior players in a year.

Re: Offaly Senior A Hurling Championship 2023
The rationale to change the rule, Tank? I don't know, and I only discovered in early 2020 that it had changed. It would presumably have required a motion at Convention.
A few years before the introduction of the split season, there was a plan to commence the Junior championships before the Senior championships began. But that couldn't be done, because it was required to commence the Senior championships first. And I wonder, without the rule change, could Kilcormac-Killoughey Senior Bs have taken the field before the club's Senior As got their campaign underway, as happened last weekend?

I doubt very much under the old rule KK B would have been allowed to hurl prior to KK A.

Re: Offaly Senior A Hurling Championship 2023
wouldnt be massive on championships outside senior A in both codes, but i assume the different grades commence the same time is to prevent senior A going first then the players that would have lined out senior A couldn't go back intermediate or junior thereafter that season..i hope i explained that as clear as possible and maybe its of no relevance to the discussion ..
