Re: Seamus Darby
I've been reading the promotional releases for this, and this episode had the potential to be one of the best. not just because of the man, and that goal, but it seems SD will delve into the tragic side of his life: his family life, failed business, emigration and return.
I would hope they delve further into his football career too: a panelist and All-Ireland medal winner in 1971, a regular from 1972 to 1976 before fading from the Offaly scene after 1976. There was a shake up of the panel between 1982's Leinster semi-final and Final which brought about his return (which wouldn't happen now with extended panels where you can't be bringing in lads from the outside for fear of upsetting the lad wearing 32).
His pen picture in the 1982 Leinster Final programme reads "Age 31. Represented Offaly in Minor and U. 21 level for three years - each grade. Won All-Ireland Senior medal in 1972. Back on to-day's team after a two year lay-off. Shopkeeper."
Looking forward to an interesting and informative hour, dé Céadaoín an 28ú Feabhra ag 9.30in.
