Currently a selector with St Brigids of Kiltoom.
Managed Doon towards the end of last year.
Managed Pádraig Pearses of Roscommon the year before last.
Was involved with Caulry a few years ago.

Why does it take the offaly county board to fill these positions...any work they do is so dragged out and seems painful.

just was on Hogan stand there and seen the news, nice to have a big name manager, I know he hasn't been around intercounty management in too recent past, but it should give Offaly a much needed boost, lets hope he gets the support of the county board and the clubs and doesn't get fed up with the politics of it with players and county board co-operating with him, anyone that doesn't should walk, and be left walking regardless of who they are..the manager is the manager, and while he might not suit everyone he has the greater panel to manage. Lets hope it goes well and looking forward to see how we do under him, the talent may be scarce, but its a good choice and nice to have a manager with pedigree of some sorts coming in.

Would appear to be a good appointment - hopefully gets the buy in from all players.

Good to have appointment made before business end of club championships.

Ya Good appointment. Dont think so
he has a terrible record everywhere he went
only bit of success was with a team John O Mahony built in 95 with Mayo before Mahony was fired and went to galway to win 2 all irelands
Maughan had his team and is still living off that

Also he is on a two year drink driving ban so is Our Offaly GAA supplying a Chauffeur also with job

Well folks,I think that it’s fair to say that nobody saw this coming.

Hopefully the new management team are given the resources required to get promoted and to do well in the championship.

He should be at a few games over the next few days.
Pity that the games are on at the same time, but it’s the last round of games …

I’m looking forward to the O’Byrne Cup already!

I'd say Klare were happy enough with his terrible record when they won the Munster title in 1992.

John O'Mahony finished up with Mayo in 1991. There were 3 managers in between O'Mahony and Maughan, including Jack O'Shea and the infamous Brian McDonald. In between that, Mayo lost by 20 points to Cork in 1993 and lost to Letrim in 1994.
To credit O'Mahony with building Maughan's team of 1996 is stretching it.

Anyway, best of luck to Maughan in the Offaly job.

Ah FFS, Clare winning Munster was 26 years ago! If thats the case, what would've been wrong with going back for Eugene McGee or Tommy Lyons?

Fierce quiet on here. Not so sure about Maughan. If its his old army style, it aint going to work as players wont tolerate that any more!

My only worry is he went for the Westmeath job and they didn’t give it to him! Did he just come here cause he didn’t get that job? I like the guy he speaks well and I’m sure he will get respect. Interesting to see his back room set up

Looking forward to this journey now. As close to a “big name” appointment as we ever had.

Good luck to him!

Hopefully we will see some encouraging signs. If we can convince someone to stick around for a bit that would be a good thing too.

Best wishes to John and all involved.
