Rhode in Leinster.

Post by black and red exile »

Anybody any thoughts on how Rhode will do in leinster this year? For what its worth i believe they will come very close to provincial honors this year. After the disaster of the Portlaoise game last year you would imagine lessons would have been taken on board as well as the fact that after the county final players and management thoughts seemed to have turned to upcoming clashes just around the corner, although the first round battle with the Wicklow champs in Aughrim will be a bit of a test i think Rhode will give Offaly football a big shot in the arm and take one step to a well overdue successful campaign.

That is quite an understatement there. If Rhode come out of Aughrim with a win i will be very surprised.Rathnew are a good side having won 9 out of the last 10 Wicklow SFC's and also throw in the fact that they won a Leinster Club Senior in 2001.They are a vastly experienced side and while Although Rhode are probably more talented on paper, it will count for nothing in the melting pot that Aughrim will become in a couple of weeks.many a team have come a cropper there and dont be too surprised if Rathnew win with 3 points to spare

Yeah I saw Rathnew beat Clara in Wicklow a few years ago. But if Rhode are 5 points better than that Clara side then they should be right there with a great chance. The big question mark will be whether Rhode have anybody to hold Tommy Gill and (to a lesser extent) Trevor Doyle.

If Rhode play to form they will win - however Rathnew have a habit of bringing teams down to their level.

Rathnew aren't a classy outfit - Clara were after winning their first county title in yonks and still could easily have got a result down there - Rhode should be good enough. Plus Tommy Gill is carrying an injury and isn't the player he was two years ago.

I don't think they're nailed on, but if I was pricing it now, 6/4 Rathnew, 6/1 Draw, 8/11 Rhode.

6/4 looks good value on the home team to me!

I see this game as the perfect launching pad for Rhodes Leinster campaign.

Its a seriously tough challenge down in Aughrim and it wouldn't suprise me to see it going to a replay in Tullamore.

If we can get over Rathnew I think we will grow in confidence and have a great chance of reaching a Leinster final.

My main worry is the length of time between the county final and the Rathnew match (6 weeks) . We're bound to be a bit ring rusty after such a break .

It was the same last year - seven weeks between playing Gracefield and Clonguish - it ended up being no problem.

Rathnew are still a very moderate side. They have a reputation, but for all that other than beating UCD one year - a collection of talented young lads who you'd assume would be more easily intimidated than most - I don't remember them ever knocking over any top quality opponents.

If Rhode play their game they'll win.

They beat Na Fianna in the 2001 Leinster final.
They aren't as strong as they were back then though.
Rhode should win.

While I don't think Rathnew are as strong as they were a few years ago, the fact that the game is in Aughrim is an advantage to them. I think Rhode would definitely have won if it was in Tullamore, but now I'm not so sure.
It would also be wrong to underestimate the Wicklow champions. In recent years I'm fairly sure they eliminated both Clara and Edenderry as well as winning the Leinster title.
