Kelly retains his MBNA Kick Fada title

Saturday, September 17

Offaly goalkeeper Paraic Kelly retained his MBNA Kick Fada title with a winning kick of 63 metres at Bray Emmets GAA Club in Bray Co. Wicklow earlier today. The ladies competition was won by Irene Munnelly from Meath with a 45-metre accurate kick.

Kelly beat off stiff competition from some of the stars of Inter county football including Gerry McGill from Donegal, Mattie Forde of Wexford, Meath's Joe Sheridan and Dublin's Mark Vaughan.

There was a record attendance for the sixth annual MBNA Kick Fada with almost 1,000 people turning out to Bray Emmets new club grounds to watch a display of top class distance kicking. Among the spectators were GAA President, Sean Kelly, Minister for the Environment, Dickie Rocke from Shannonbridge and the event was hosted by RTE's Michael Lyster.

The MBNA Kick Fada competition, football's equivalent of the Poc Fada, determines the champion "long and accurate kicker" of Gaelic football.

Competitors must kick the ball over the bar through specific competition goal posts with distances measured from the posts to where the ball was kicked. As winners, Paraic Kelly and Irene Munnelly each received a Eur1,500 holiday voucher.
