Pure Mule coming back to RTÉ

The acclaimed RTÉ drama 'Pure Mule' is returning for a two-part special.

Written by Eugene O'Brien, directed by Declan Recks and produced by Accomplice Television, 'Pure Mule: The Last Weekend' is now shooting in and around Birr, Co Offaly.

'The Last Weekend' finds Scobie (Garrett Lombard) preparing to leave for Australia, Jennifer (Charlene McKenna) back home for a family funeral and the whole town trying to come to terms with the recession.

The cast also includes Dawn Bradfield, Simone Kirby, Gail Fitzpatrick, Orla Fitzgerald and Liam Carney.

Commenting, Jane Gogan, Commissioning Editor RTÉ Drama, said: "This new instalment offers us the opportunity to take a look at recessionary, midlands Ireland through the eyes of familiar characters with the warmth and fun of the original series.

"Eugene has written a tremendous script about a world he knows intimately.

"Jennifer and Scobie are such iconic characters and it's a real privilege and pleasure to be able to reintroduce them to our audience."

The original award-winning series of 'Pure Mule' will be repeated on RTÉ in late July.

Great show, looking forward to seeing a rerun + the 2 new episodes.

It's on this Sunday night, with part 2 on Monday night, each after the 9 o'clock news. 'Tis clashing with The Sunday Game so the video will have to be set!

Nallens' pub (McKeons' on the screen) is now gone but they were supposed to have had enough footage of it to re-use in the new series!

Actually I watched the first series over the last few Sunday nights. T'was actually better than I had remembered it.

Personally, I think it's a load of shite.

What did ye think of the last installment?
I though overall it was good. The accents were toned down a bit and more accurate, mostly because yer wan Ter-rayazz was gone.
It suffered a bit from having less characters in it. Tom Murphy's unfortunate demise robbed the show of the brother vs. brother dynamic.

The vibe of the show was a bit more downbeat. A snapshot for much of the country really.
Back in 2005, it was all craic, drinking, puking, riding and more drinking.

This time the mood did reflect the current the current state of chassis.
The abandoned half built estate, fellas being forced to emigrate, the boarded up pub, people nursing a pint in the quiet pub.

The best part of it all was the passing of the torch from a more sedate Scobie to the young lad who looks set to follow in his footsteps.
