Is it the last round of fixtures or something? Perhaps all the outcomes were already decided. Still seems weird that there would be so many, and even if that were the case, young lads would still like to hurl..

So much for the development structures :)

LUSMAGH 0-13 ST.RYNAGH’S 0-9.

Neutral observers may have been surprised at the celebratory mood of the Lusmagh natives following their win over St. Rynagh’s at Rath on Sunday evening. However, when you examine closely the way Lusmagh have lived in the shadow of their nearest neighbours hurling wise for practically the entire existence of the sport, you will see what a win like this means to the small parish. This was Lusmagh’s first win over the town side at this level since 1989 and their first in ten attempts since that semi final meeting. There’s also a feeling that maybe this Lusnagh team crossed the Rubicon on Sunday evening; we won’t know this until later in the championship.

Conditions were good at Rath, though the pitch was slippery with a strong breeze blowing down the field. St. Rynagh’s looked the sharpest in the earlier exchanges and gave Lusmagh a bit of a run around. Conor Hernon and Cathal Horan were dominant in defence and Gary Healy was energetic in attack. Despite this, Lusmagh looked the hungrier side even at this stage They were hooking and blocking superbly and were regularly winning the ball on the deck in the several ‘rucks’ which formed. Lusmagh levelled at four points each around the twenty minute mark which helped steady the ship somewhat. Lusmagh led 7 to 5 at the half time whistle; a half where both defences were on top.

Wind assisted in the second half, Eoin Kelly was able to bypass the two Horans with his puckout, aiming at the rangy Paul Bermingham who was by now operating at top of the right from where he scored three from play in this second half. The Lusmagh defence were now well on top of their briefs and had stretched their lead to 11-6 at the three quarter mark. Gary Kelly, by now leading the ’Rynagh’s charge, replied with two quick points to make it 11-8 but Lusmagh didn’t panic and kept control on the game, firing over the insurance scores from distance to ensure a famous win.

It’s not fair to pick a few names in what was a marvellous team performance. Lusmagh mixed the quality hurling with their traditional spirit and hunger. What was most impressive was that while Lusmagh were the better team on the day they made it count on the scoreboard. They were also forced to line out without Aidan Hanrahan who will be a long term absentee having sustained a serious facial injury playing football.

Those who complain of the quality of coaching at grassroots level should perhaps take a look at the Lusmagh set-up. There are no ‘cack-handers’ on this team and all have been well prepared since school level. I understand they now meet Kinnitty in the quarter final in three weeks, a match which will bring its own challenges.

The perfect weekend got underway in Banagher on Saturday evening when Lusmagh’s junior hurlers qualified for the final with a 2-12 to 2-6 win over a Coolderry team who had been scoring freely in previous rounds. As befits a junior team from a rural hurling parish it had the usual mix of experience and youth with both sectors making a valuable contribution. They now face Geashill in the final with the pressure on to secure a win, having lost three junior B finals in the last six years.

This was a well deserved victory for Lusmagh, who lined out without their best forward Aidan Hanrahan, as a consequence of this one would have imagined St Rynaghs would have capitalised on this and secured the victory to top the group. However this was not the case as Lusmagh, who played with gritty determination, defeated St Rynaghs in this Shannonside derby game.

I would agree with Plain of the Herbs that St Rynaghs gave Lusmagh a bit of a run around in the early stages, they wasted possesion in the early exchanges. Once Lusmagh got in front in the first half St Rynaghs never really looked like they would manage to get the scores they so badly needed!! They appeared to lack any real hunger for the game, and no doubt will be dissapointed by their forward division, which included Offaly senior panelist (K. Kelly), two Offaly Under 21's (D. Horan and G. Kelly), when they needed a goal in the second half it never looked like coming! They came up against a resilient Lusmagh defence which looked very assured throughout. How Offaly management continue to overlook David Moran is really beyond me, he was super on Sunday! On the Lusmagh side, they also will be disappointed with the return from their forwards, a poor return of four points from play for their forward division. Surely against better oppostion they would have been made to pay for this, and they like St Rynaghs were wasteful with the amount of possesion they had in the second half.

Was at the first match on Sunday between St Rynaghs and K/K in the intermediate quarter final and was really impressed by John Ryan who was hurling center back for St Rynaghs. He dominated the game from start to finish, hard to understand why he isnt playing for the St Rynaghs senior team.

The hurling championship continues this weekend with a double header in Rath on Sunday evening. The knockout stage gets under way with the playoff game between Shinrone and Shamrocks while Coolderry will complete their group programme in a clash with neighbours Ballyskenagh.

SHINRONE v SHAMROCKS
It’s difficult to gauge how this will go as neither have met very often at senior level. As usual when Shamrocks face a team from the traditional hurling area there will be an interesting clash of styles. Shinrone have faced three of the more traditional teams in Clareen, Kinnitty and Birr in the group stages so it’s the first time they will have faced a team like Shamrocks. How they cope with this will be crucial to them.
Shamrocks have yet to win a match in this year’s championship though they are a tough nut to crack, play the possession game well are very fit. Still, Shinrone should have beaten Birr last time and if they can build on this I would expect them to pull through but only just.
LAST MEETING: Shinrone 3-12 Shamrocks 1-15 (first round; 2003)

COOLDERRY v BALLYSKENAGH
A clash of neighbours here with Coolderry looking to get their championship prospects back on track following their defeat at the hands of Killoughey last time out. I expect a backlash here though not to the extent their junior side handed out to the Black and Red a few weeks ago.
Some extra spice has been added to this one following Tullamore’s narrow win over Drumcullen on Thursday night. Following this, ’Skenagh are twelve points behind Tullamore on the goal difference stakes and will face the county town side in the last match in the group. If ’Skenagh can keep the margin to a minimum here they would give themselves every chance of overhauling Tullamore next week to progress.
LAST MEETING: Coolderry 1-17 Ballyskenagh 1-10 (fourth round; 2004)

POTH,
Have the Killoughey men decided to go it alone? Maybe someone should let Kilcormac know. :D

Tullamore v Drumcullen

Tullamore v Drumcullen

I won't even attempt to write a match report but here's a very brief run down on the game.

Drumcullen hit some bad wides in the first half and trailed at one stage by 1-8 to 0-1. Half time score 1-9 to 1-2.

Early in the second half Tullamore got a rather fortunate goal from the 21 to go 2-10 to 1-4 ahead and looked to be heading for a big win. But Drumcullen upped it a gear and scored a rasper of a goal to bring it back to six and then very soon afterwards they scored a penalty to bring it back to just three points at 2-10 to 3-4. A further point reduced the margin to two, with about 13 mins to go. Tullamore increased the margin to 6 at 2-15 to 3-6 but Drumcullen's fourth goal reduced it to three again with about six mins left on the clock. A couple of minutes later they scored their fifth goal and draw looked to be on the cards but Tullamore weren't finished yet and raised the white flag twice before the final whistle to give them a two point margin in the end at 2-17 to 5-6.

What's the story with Diarmud Horan, not on the county panel any more?
