Offaly Under 20s hurling 2024

Post by JimBwobb »

I see our Under 20 hurlers out against Dublin on Saturday 30th March in the first round of the Championship.

Do we have many of last years cohort still with us ? I would imagine the majority are, perhaps better to ask what players are now overage ?

I think we will have a lot of last year's cohort.
I'm open to correction, but I believe Mark Troy, Luke Watkins, Sam Burke, Cathal King, Cormac Egan, Charlie Mitchell will be overage.

Unfortunately these lads brought a lot of the physicality last year so others will have to step up as the team will be light overall.

The obvious candidates to replace some of the overage players would include the likes of Shane Rigney (who was on the starting 15 for most of last year), Ruairi Kelly who has always delivered in the big games and Hoare between the sticks.

Do we know of any form players from challenges over the past few weeks?

I'm pretty sure that Cathal King is still underage this year. That would make ten of the team which started in last year's All Ireland final to be eligible for Under 20 this year.

Add in guys like Ruairi Kelly, Donal Shirley, Shane Rigney, Daniel Hand and Leigh Kavanagh and there's the makings of a fine team.

the line up when this group were minor in the link below. Suffered a big defeat to Kilkenny 3.23 to 1.16.

Alot of the lads have had minor and u20 success since that game but there is no guarantee with these age groups. Last year they had a nice handy draw and were able to sharpen up in early group games against low risk opposition. This time round need to be hitting the ground running as Dublin certainly in parnell park will be very confident too and physically strong.

Last time Offaly won leinster u21 hurling title in 2000 they had the majority of the same team the following year but exited to Wexford at semi final stage and on paper were more than capable of pushing on. Goes to show there is no guarantees or its not very predicatable, just start with a blank canvass and tear into Dublin from word go because they are going to try bully them like cork did.

Wexford GAA have up there Under 19 team are playing Offaly in the Leinster Hurling Development League tonight.

Assuming this is a group of players between minor and under 20s who are not at the required under 20 level intercounty and are developing?

I would say looking at the line up, players who have not already played u20 last year is the eligibility criteria.

Competition set up by kk simply to bridge a gap. You can't have played u20 to play in this competition. It's minimal contact time to help keep players in the loop.

Very Strong team, best of luck lads 💪💪

When have panels reduced from 26 to 24 or am I missing something?

Very strong looking team. What’s the story with Conor Doyle. Has he been injured?

Panels were 24 last year- not sure when/if they changed from 26

2022 minor panel was also 24.

Was Connor grennan not rumoured to be on this panel?

That's some team the experience they have and there only under 20 🤯

U20 and Minor panels have always been 24. Senior panels are 26 for maybe a decade now, having been 30 previously.
