Leinster Club - Football

Postby Hyper » Wed Oct 31, 2018 10:54 am

Very quite around here lately. It is good to see that all the clubs involved in the Leinster Club Championships have advanced to the quarter finals of their respective competitions. Has to be encouraging.

Both Rhode and Shamrocks should be reaching the Leinster final at a minimum..

Home advantage is huge and both will have semi final advantage if win quarters in 2 weeks.

Rhode face a tough challenge in Mullinalaghta, a well organised solid team. Home advantage huge. Still expect a low scoring game.

Its winter football so i wouldn't expect anything but a dog fight.

Rhode are looking to break Leinster and therefore just need to get through the next two games injury free.

A 100% record so far for all our football and hurling reps in Leinster. Great showing so far and long may it continue. Some very favorable draws also with a lot of home draws which has to be noted. Well done to all!

Well that's two of the football teams into semi's. Great wins today by Shamrocks and St Brigid's, the latter been down 8 points halfway through second half and won by 2. Hopefully Rhode will make it 3/3 tomorrow.

Very tight affair and all hinged on two incidents - Darby sending off - harsh as it seemed and on one minute early in 2nd half. If Rhode goal is allowed, I think they win! However, it goes quickly down far end for well taken goal which proved the difference.

The first half was horrible to watch, not made easier by tough underfoot conditions. Rhode backs acquitted themselves well and coped well against the extra man even though Mullinalaghta over-ran them a few times late on and could have had at least another goal. I felt McGivney was the key man for them and everything seemed to go through him and Brady who was threatening without doing huge damage. Outside of these, I felt Rhode acquitted themselves well and got good protection from midfield and half forwards.

That said Rhode struggled big time in forwards and Longford champs seemed to get their scores easier in second half. They had more attacks and generally I felt were more penetrating when they moved the ball - albeit with extra man. They always seemed to have more options around the ball than Rhode when attacking, moving forward at pace whereas Rhode were slow and ponderous in build up play and when they looked up, only had one man inside opposition 45 for most part.

It baffled me why Niall Mac was rarely in there given he is one of the most prolific club inside forwards in the country let alone Offaly or Longford. I thought he was wasted to a certain extent but its too late now.

Anton Sullivan did fairly well in there in second half winning frees and ball and took lot of abuse from full back - even though old habits die hard and he was lucky not to get line after winning a free in second half. There was one great goal chance in second half when Niall Darby made an excellent support run but wasn't given ball when he should have got it and goal chance went a begging. Rory McNamee went in towards finish but offered little threat when a goal was needed. He is very skillful but not a ball winner and is the type of player that relies on a bigger man around him to feed off. By all means, put him in but have a Niall or someone else in there he could work off.

All in all, a decent effort with 14 men against a team who have every chance of reaching final and possibly even winning. They have got very close to Dublin champs in recent times and it'll take a decent team to beat Mullinalaghta. They are well organised, have won 3 in a row in Longford and you can see why their manager Mickey Graham has been recruited by Cavan.

What actually happened for the sending off? Have played against Darby many times before and never had any issues. Does not strike me as a lad who would be doing anything stupid? Was there provocation? Key man for rhode. Big loss and playing most of the game with 14 was a massive uphill struggle.

From what I hear Niall Mac played most of the game 40 yards or more from goal. If that is true, the opponents would have been over the moon.

Its a bad loss.
