Re: Football Draw
For three consecutive years, Offaly have lost the game that would have set up a meeting with Dublin.
Re: Football Draw
GAA really need to start looking at having maybe a junior, intermediate and senior championship. Or simply Junior and Senior at a minimum. Yes I know the roars are coming in anger to this as we all should have a right to battle for Sam. True enough, but bottom line is most counties at present offer nothing to the championship from a competitive point of view.
The gap is too wide between counties. Partly the GAA's fault with uneven distribution of funding over decades. Everybody knows that and Dublin have been given a major push the last 20 years. The other fault particularly in our own county is an inefficient county board. That has been discussed enough here already so we know that is a problem.
Bottom line is, Offaly are where they are. A struggling division 3 outfit. Beaten by 11 points by a division 4 side last year. That is the facts. Yes Westmeath are better than division 4 and are really about division 3 standard. So is there any point in playing the no1 team in the country and holding up club fixtures to do so.
From a motivational point of view just how happy will Wicklow or Offaly be with the draw knowing that they will be entering the Dublin game with no actual realistic belief of winning. so lets keep the score down and be ready for qualifiers. Is that what will get players through the winter training and demanding intercounty commitment.
There is junior, intermediate and senior grades at club level and at female intercounty level. It gives every team a chance to move up when they have earned the right to. At the moment there is far too many meaningless games in the football championship. Games we know long in advance how they will turn out.
It is also a unfair on counties like in Ulster who need to be up to speed and hitting championship form in May whereas Dublin for example don't really need to plan to be peaking until August because their route is quiet easy. By the time August comes around some teams have been going hard for a few months and begin to tire.
Overall I think the current football championship is dreadfully boring, predictable and not very watchable for most games.
We need a new structure. Funding needs to be evenly handed out and even more focused on the Junior/intermediate sides. There also should be the reward of a trip to the states or Australia or something along those lines too.

Dublin-we’ll give it a good crack
i dont mean to be defeatist or anything but what does giving it a good crack mean? keeping it under 12 points? were werent capable of beating a div 4 side in the 2017 championship .we cant be expected to be even slightly competitive against one of the best teams ever to play the game.? i agree with timber above.if we won something like a b championship and got a bit of publicity in the national media it might be the springboard for a revival.we need the younger people to want to don the jersey with a chance of winning something? remember no offaly people under 24 have any memory of any offaly football success..

Re: Football Draw
It's pure pig headedness from the football counties who refuse to accept reality. No one has an issue with a tiered hurling championship as it makes perfect sense. Nearly all hurling teams have something to play for every year.
On a side issue, can we bring the Dubs to birr if we are playing them!

Go hard at it for 70. No expectations, no weight on the shoulders. Kerry hardly had an eejit in charge of their junior/developing team.
We’ll wait and see.
A bit of optimism goes a long way. Look at Roscommon, we should try get to their level in 2 years. It’s doable.
I despise foreign sports, but look at Southampton. From league 1 to the PL in a couple of seasons. And after a shaky start, are consistently upper mid-table in the league.
Good Luck
