New Offaly Management/Panel Members for 2017

Postby Up The Faithful » Thu Sep 08, 2016 7:03 pm

Anyone one know who is rumoured to be the next Offaly Senior Hurling manager? Or who should be the next manager?

Should there be new faces added to the panel?

Relatively successful u21 team surely some are ready for the step up.

We have had some of our good hurlers refusing to be involved in panels in the past.

So the question is WHO WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE AS NEXT OFFALY SENIOR MANAGER AND WHAT NEW FACES WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE ON THE TEAM/PANEL??? :D :?:

Personally I'd love us to go out and get a top quality manager and see if we can make that gap a bit closer to the bigger teams!!

Talks are that someone inside the county will be picked, iv no problem with this but from what I hear they would be picking someone inside the county to cut back the costs which is totally wrong, every effort should be made so the senior hurled have the right structure and expertise available to them!!!

I'd love to see Eddie breenan or the likes over them.

Regarding new players...

I thought the two o toole/ green brother's might have something to offer specially the backs man he is very fast and sticky could make a good corner back something we need.

O Kelly - was there last year at the end but hopefully in from the start of the year.

E Cahill- try him in goals has a better puck out than dempsey something we could look at possibly.

I'd bring back the two gearthys from k/k give them a good shot at it.

Anyone else?

That post lost all credibility the second you mentioned taking James Dempsey out of the goals.

Maybe that's why we are struggling so much people with tunnel vision like yourself.

Dempsey is probably the best shot stopper in the country and fair play to him... but his puck outs are not up to scratch and that's common knowledge.

Amazing in this day and age and a keeper cannot or will not give a short puck out!

I never said take him out of the goals by the way

greenairfield, i totally agree with you.

Dempseys puck out are the weakest side of his game but he also needs competition and I think Cahill could be the man for this. What about Eoin Kelly of Lusmagh?

I would love to see a high profile name but they cost money, money we dont have and money our county board is not willing to spend. Maybe we good produce an internal manager which can step up to the plate. I personnally dont think Danny Owens is the man but he has a good record with KK, Kevin Martin could be in with a shot, Aidan Hanrahan has managed a lot of club teams, Joachim Kelly maybe or maybe even give Cirain McDonald who was a selector with the group last a chance.

The players and their attitude are the key no matter the management, we need last years panel with lads coming back and lads coming in. The likes of Cathal Parlon, Tom Carroll, Sean Coughlan, Dan Currams, Conor Mahon, Peter & Thomas Gerarthy, Con Mahon back on the panel along with the under 21's of last year some which are mentioned in previous comments.

The lads themselves have to set the demands and standards they want. Get themselves in the gym and be flying early in the year and not to be playing catch up in May or June. There is no round robin this year so we have no excuses to be flying it for the first round. A tough first round draw could be a killer but fuck it, we cant be hoping for a easy draw to improve the situation Offaly hurling is at.

Why not consider Anthony Cunningham for the post of hurling manager, he would be a good choice if he was interested? I am not convinced by an internal candidate, regardless whether if it is for cost reasons, surely the quality of manager is the critical factor.

Whoever gets the job will come in at the concluding stages of the championship, if an appointment is made in the next few weeks.

Regarding the players, that is a job for the new manager and his team to assemble a panel of committed players.
A county player has to give a big commitment to his county nowadays, along with career, education, family.

Yeah I know that but lets try get him back to his home county. Im sure Eoin would be very interested in the move home.

I would love to see Chunningham get the job. Hopefully his name is in the hat. I think Danny Owens could bring something as a selector and bring Jimmy Dunne as the physical coach?

If looking for an experienced coach with a little internal knowledge, then Ken Hogan is the man. Lot of experience and did well with Coolderry. Support him with a few good people and that would make something. Think McDonald should be staying on as selector as he would know the younger lads coming through from U21.

Like said previously, wouldnt think Danny Owens is answer to management issue but should certainly be considered as a selector, knowing the scene as he does. Getting the KK lads onside is also key to any improvement we might make.

From player perspective, here is a bit of an outlier but Ross Brady should be looked at for Offaly hurlers. Better known as a footballer, he is strong, physical and can hurl better than most for the little time he plays it. Exposure to regular top class training and he would be a real contender for the county senior team. There are probably others too from the better intermediate clubs that should also be looked at - ie Clodiagh Gaels, Carrig / Riverstown, Ballyskenagh, and Brosna Gaels. We cannot afford to miss out on anybody.

He would certainly put a bit of life into the set up , did great to win an all Ireland with Clare who were a young enough team , also did wonders with LIT a few years ago , think he still trains college team. Someone with a reputation is needed to fill this roll , inexperienced managers just don't cut the mustard , players need someone to look up all the top teams are trained by men who have won all Ireland's , it's time to get back on track here lads, this once proud county needs to rise from the dead!!

Davy is ultra professional. No room for lads who don't toe the line. Sean Ryan said that the most professional set up he has been in was the 2016 one under kelly. Its Davy way or no way. Be a very interesting watch though!!

What are you on about greenairfield. Club success is where all good managers start. And I just said he would be worth a shot as a selector.
Suppose you want whelan back. What success had he in his managerial career?

I would like to see a big name like Chinningham with McDonald and Cahill. Maybe include Owen n Kevin Martin to the equation.
