Huge shock. Fierce important that county board make the correct call. Appeared to be some progress with players available last year from previous year. If they can re recruit 3 or 4 KK lads and add a few new U21s to the work ethic of last year we will make improvements. I think McDonald should be considered. Kevin Martin who won a Laois senior championship last year should also be in contention. http://www.hoganstand.com/ArticleForm.aspx?ID=259488

Offaly GAA Press Release:

'The Committee to oversee the implementation of the Offaly GAA Hurling Pathway has been announced and sees former Offaly hurler and Coolderry captain Brian Carroll take on the role of Director of Hurling Coaching.

'The Portlaoise based School teacher will be joined on the committee by Liam Hogan All-Ireland medallist from 1981, who chaired the Hurling review, Tom Moloney acting Games Manager, Pat Cleary Coaching Officer and All-Ireland medallist from 1985, Rory Hanniffy who recently retired from Offaly senior hurling, David Kenny who missed the last couple of season with Offaly due to injury and is a secondary school teacher in St Brendan’s Community School, Ger Scales from St Rynagh’s who is also a Secondary school teacher in Kilcormac, current Offaly Camogie star Marian Crean and Mary Wyer, both of whom are primary teachers and former Offaly All-Ireland winning medallist Cillian Farrell who is a qualified Strength and Conditioning Coach.

'The Committee was introduced to the clubs of Offaly at a meeting in Kilcormac on Wednesday night and the emphasis was very much on the success of this being driven by clubs with the support of the implementation group and Offaly County Board through its Coaching & Games Committee. It was stressed that this is an ongoing work in progress plan which will be updated on a continuous basis and which will only work if clubs have the right personnel in place filling the important roles of Club Coaching Officer and School Liaison Officer.

'The plan, which was launched earlier this summer, was the culmination of months of work by a review committee set up by Offaly County Board Chairperson Padraig Boland and which comprised originally of Kieran Keeneghan (Chairman) St Rynaghs, Diarmuid Healy Conaghy Shamrocks, Damien Martin St Rynaghs, Pat Cleary (County Coaching Officer) Ballinamere/Durrow, Pat O’Connor Coolderry, Martin Hanamy St Rynaghs and Liam Hogan Coolderry. The Committee subsequently evolved and expanded, under the Chairmanship of Liam Hogan and the following were added Alan Mulhall Games Manager Walsh Island, Finian McDermott Tullamore, Marion Crean Secretary (Camogie/Primary Schools) Shinrone, Mary Wyer PRO (Camogie/Primary Schools) Tullamore, Ger Scales (Post Primary Schools) St Rynaghs and Jimmy O Dwyer Leinster Council.'
Great to see this moving forward.
And as much as i want to be positive i have to asked the question??
"Brian Carroll take on the role of Director of Hurling Coaching"
Listen nothing against Brian or anything like that but has Brian coached a senior, Intermediate, under-age team yet.
Surely you want your director of hurling coaching to be an experienced coach.
It's the same again. A point a young man before he ready for the job.
I know Brian will give it his all but surely a Director of a Coaching should be done by an experienced coach?

Looks like being a school teacher was main criteria to be a committee member

Honestly i'm just happy the plan is in place, it wasn't so long ago that we had no plan, no qualified coaches and no training grounds being built so this news has got me jazzed about Offaly Hurling moving forward.

Props to the county board and the review committee, been buzzing with the news all day :D

Is the plan perfect?, no but the thing that i really like about it is that there will be an ongoing review process to see where its going right and where its going wrong which means the mistakes of the past won't be repeated

As regards to Brian Carroll being the Director of Hurling, sure he's young in coaching terms but it means he will bring some modern ideas to the table, not stuff that worked 20 years ago and remember this position isn't the same as managing an intercounty team, what he will be judged on is the quality of players coming through, not results, so he will have a longer time frame to correct any mistakes he might make through the review process

I hope they put a similar plan together for the Football review

It's good that a director of hurling has been appointed. That person does not need to be a hands on coaching. He needs to direct all the people who do the coaching and oversee the work. He himself should not be taking sessions or doing workshops. He should be making sure clubs are are doing the work. Development squads are been done right and that there is good work been done in the schools. He should be implemented plans and making sure they are carried out. For example the hurling plan that was delayed for so long. A director of hurling would make that no delay would occur and it is fully implemented. Bypassing the county board.
What I would be most interested in is how much power he has and who he has to answer to. I'd be amazed if he lasted 5 years with a heavy workload and a county board dragging it's heels over anything that might cost money.

I hope your correct.
I know Brian will do his best but Brian has hurling experience not coaching experience.
I hope Brian know his limitation as a inexperienced coach.
As the old saying goes. A good director appoints a great team in place and get out of the way as they do the work.
Brian going around instruction coaches when he has no coaches experiences himself would be a disaster.

Things progressing well here:

From Midlands Radio on Facebook...
"Offaly's hurling review committee have resigned en masse.

The group headed by former Ballyboden manager Liam Hogan, who authored a report on hurling in the Faithful County last year decided to step down in frustration at Offaly County Board's implementation of their recommendations.

Among those to resign are Director of Hurling Brian Carroll, who was appointed to the coaching and development committee alongside Hogan and former Offaly camogie captain Marion Crean.

Offaly's link up with Athlone IT has also come to and end, it had previously been seen as a cornerstone of the Faithful County's attempts to improve the strength and conditioning of their young players."

Tommy Byrne and the CB will brand Liam Hogan Brian Carroll and Marion Crean as 3 more Godshites that are not committed to Offaly alongside good guys like E Murphy C Egan D Currams D Currams P Rigney etc.
Its all about power from i can see the CB will not be told what to do .

Pat Nolan doesn't spare timber here:

http://www.irishmirror.ie/sport/gaa/pat ... n-10786128

Pat Nolan column: Pat Flanagan farce is just tip of the iceberg in Offaly

On Friday it emerged that the Offaly Hurling Implementation Committee had stepped down

Amid the fallout surrounding Pat Flanagan, a far greater controversy in Offaly GAA slipped under the radar.

Could Flanagan’s departure as senior football manager have been handled better? Possibly. Was it the biggest scandal to have hit Offaly GAA in recent years? It wasn’t even the biggest of last week.

On Friday it emerged that the Offaly Hurling Implementation Committee, chaired by Liam Hogan and containing other former Offaly hurlers of more recent vintage in Brian Carroll, David Kenny and Michael Verney, among others, had stepped down.

It’s a tribute to these people’s patience that it took so long before it finally cracked.

After a dismal showing in the 2014 Championship, the Offaly Hurling Review Committee was formed in the hope of reviving the county’s flagging fortunes.

Diarmuid Healy, who inspired their breakthrough in the 80s, was brought on board though he and others eventually quit in frustration at the county board.

Hogan remained and spearheaded the production of the Offaly Hurling Pathway, a 39-page document which was officially submitted to the county board on April 1, 2015.

The report wasn’t acted on, however, as the board sat on its hands before it was leaked to several media outlets, including this one, a full 13 months later, belatedly humiliating the board into adopting it.

The Offaly Hurling Implementation Committee, comprising many of the same members as the review committee, was then established to roll out the pathway report, with Carroll’s appointment as director of hurling coaching a cornerstone of the project.

Initially, things appeared to be progressing well before the resurfacing of the board’s lack of tolerance for the committee, which felt repeatedly undermined.

Carroll produced a thoroughly in-depth player pathway document for players aged from four to 18 but even requesting something as simple as uploading it on the Offaly GAA website proved to be an exhausting challenge before it was finally acted upon.

A clear the air meeting was held on May 9, at which the need for communication between the committee and the board to improve dramatically was stressed. That the committee didn’t hear from an elected board official thereafter proved to be a tipping point.

Another was the lack of progress with underage development squads, for whom Athlone IT was to oversee strength and conditioning having entered an arrangement with Offaly GAA.

The committee questioned the sparsity of work being carried out in this regard and learned only last week that the individual responsible for rolling out this process in the college had moved on several months ago, with no adequate replacement to work with the Offaly underage players.

With this, they felt their position was no longer tenable.

Offaly GAA receives a €40,000 grant from the Leinster Council which is supposed to go towards AIT’s S&C work, so where is this money is going?

It’s one of a number of questions that Mirror Sport has put to Offaly GAA only to be told there would be no response, as the county’s flagship hurling teams continue to fall well off the pace.

While there are very capable people involved with Offaly GAA, some are hopelessly overworked or asked to be a square peg in a round hole. For the past year the county has had no PRO.
A fish rots from the head.

At the end of 2016, outgoing secretary Tommy Byrne was reappointed as chairman 12 years after first holding the position, when a player strike broke out in frustration at a number of issues, including the treatment of managers.

You could describe his re-election as Offaly’s Donald Trump moment but that would be wholly unfair on the US electorate.

At least they could claim they didn’t quite know what they were letting themselves in for.

Depressing stuff. Offaly GAA are well and truly screwed.
There doesn't seem to be a tipping point.
