Leinster Club Championship

Post by Wing Back »

Any views on how Coolderry will fare this weekend against Cuala?

I keep second guessing myself. I think Coolderry can definitely play better than they did in the County Final against St Rynaghs, but after looking at Cuala beating St. Judes very comfortably it's hard to call. The Bookies have them both even money with the draw at 8/1, which is pretty fair. Coolderry have had a few weeks rest since the county final which will benefit them, but Cuala are young and extremely fit and playing 8 days after their county final won't bother them. Mark Schutte is the big danger for Cuala in my own opinion. He has size, speed and is well able to hurl. But they have good hurlers in all positions and carry no passengers. Any team that can get over Ballyboden in Dublin is a solid outfit.

Coolderry have a lot of experience though and won't panic under pressure. They held their shape well for most of the match (bar a 15mins blitz in the 2nd half) against St Rynagh's who would also have been considered younger and fitter, similar to Cuala. I can't help but think that if St Rynagh's were in Leinster they would be fancied to go far as there was a lot of hype going into the county final. Coolderry seem to be sneaking under the radar with not much expected. If Coolderry are to win they will need play for the whole 60mins particularly the forwards who went missing for a time against Banagher, but will also need to cut down on the free count from the county final, as David Tracey is a pretty accurate free taker for Cuala. If they do that they will give themselves a good chance.

Any views?

On a side note....... I fancy Clonkill to give Oulart a bit of a scare aswell.

My only fear here would be the level of fitness , Coolderry have some players that could be caught for pace , Joe and Kevin Brady whilst good hurlers lack that turn of speed , but with the rain that's falling now if it continues the ground will be heavy and won't help guys who rely on speed . Dublin teams are always difficult to beat and I can't see much in it at the end, I'd fancy a sneaky draw at 8/1 here but best of luck to Coolderry did us proud 3 year ago , and will won't let us down come Sunday . I also fancy Clonkill , strong skilful team who won't fear the Wexford outfit one bit.

Also.....Does anyone know because Coolderry have home advantage, do they or did they get to choose where the game is played?

Or is this governed by the county board when the draw was originally made?

Could this game have been played in Birr instead of Tullamore?

Just a question, not trying to stir the whole SBP vs OCP debate.

I think Leinster Council decide on dates and venues, not clubs or counties.

Coolderry looked for the game to be in Birr but the leinster/CB council turned it down for some reason

Senior club matches are played at the county grounds - St Mullins played at Carlow (despite the county town being the opposite end of the county to Carlow most southerly parish), Clough-Ballacolla played Oulart at Portlaoise, Clonkill will face Oulart at Mullingar, and so on. It's different for the Intermediate and Junior club championships. Then again, what they would have done had Edenderry won their first round is all academic now..

I saw Cuala win their County final last Saturday, and I agree with Wing Back’s assessment of them above.

Cuala have forwards. They have a good half-back line too, both of which are areas where you would target Coolderry. Cuala played without a full-forward, the corner-forwards kept to the corners (as opposed to the edge of the square) and they played some good ball to the corners. Cuala-s sweeper swept very well, and he was under every long delivery and every dropping ball throughout the game.

As Wing Back noted, Mark Schutte is a deadly forward, but so are both Treacys. David is well known but his brother Seán looked very much the part in the County final. Hard to know about their inside defence as they weren’t really tested by St Jude’s, who never really showed up for the Final. And when St Jude’s pushed their ‘spare’ defender further upfield after half-time, Cuala capitalised on the extra space

A strong, physical team, Cuala, who won almost every ruck, scrum and contest for possession in the county final. Not a typical Dublin team either, they wouldn’t have many (if indeed any) gangly, rangy fellas who seem to be preferred by Dublin county teams and underage operations.

Paul Schutte missed the final owing to injury and is said to be out for some time. That Cuala had the belief to overcome his loss speaks volumes. Now, I don’t know if deploying a sweeper is a regular Cuala plan, or Paul Schutte’s absence prompted them to the need to protect their defence. Whatever, they completely crowded the St Jude’s attack as the chased the game in the second half. To that end, Coolderry forwards should welcome O’Connor Park’s spaces.

Offaly don't have a great record against Dublin clubs. At least not until recently. Indeed, Birr's win over Craobh Chiaráin in 2006 was the first win for Offaly champions over Dublin champions.

i have to say coolderry have impressed me this year . They played some really good hurling in the first half of the county final ,were under presure for a lot o f the second half but finished strongly to win .
They workrate of the forwards has improved hugely this year , there chasing getting hooks and blocks in .
Sunday won be easy for Cuala either , Coolderry wont be just making up numbers .they won leinster in 2011 so they will feel that they have a good chance and especially with j kelly as manager .
best of luck to the lads ,hope the supporters come out on sunday .

Best of luck to both Lusmagh and Coolderry.
I think both teams will come through this weekend.
Cuala have good players but are far from been a complete team.
But i still think Coolderry will have a bit to much for them from what i've seen of the two teams.
It should be a good battle looking forward to it now.
