The sort of scoreline that must of us feared, but hoped wouldn't happen.
By all accounts Offaly gave it plenty, but just weren't in the same class. Even looking at the brief highlights, Offaly players are in full firefighting mode, doing their best to try and retrieve the various danger situations.

Alius annus horribilis.

Was in Ennis on Saturday night ( always travel anywhere and anytime our hurlers play) and it was a sad occasion. We were outrun and outclassed all over the field and it was very sad to watch. Once again our goalkeeper James Dempsey was OUTSTANDING and without him the score line would have read 6 goals. Offaly were not able to do the simple skills of catching the ball the air or clear ball to their own men. I would like to say thank you to the panel of players who gave their all but it is a relief that this year is over.

A whole new change of thought is needed by all who love Offaly hurling in order to get us back to competitiveness by 2020. No more blaming, just decide from Aug 1st that we need to change mindset and focus on making our hurling as good as it can be.

We must by now acknowledge that it is not WHERE we play but HOW we play is the most important thing. If we are talking about the future, no under underage players would view Birr add their spiritual home as they would have gone to county finals and national league matches in O Connor Park over the last 9 years. If we are building a Centre of Excellence, with all modern facilities, we should surely want a Stadium of Excellence, which we have in O Connor Park with top class dressing rooms and pitch for the players. We are a small county, it is only 25-30 miles to Tullamore from South, North,East or West Offaly so some on folks,embrace he future and let us have a future to look forward to!!

J Dempsey;
D Shortt, N Wynne, D King;
E Murphy, C Egan, G Conneely;
E Nolan, ; J Mulrooney (0-1)D
P Murphy (0-1), S Kinsella (0-4), Currams,
B Carroll, J Bergin (0-1); S Dooley (0-6f).
Subs: S Cleary (0-2) for E Nolan, S Ryan for G Conneely, P Camon for D Shortt, S Wynne for D Currams, D Mooney for E Murphy, C Kiely for C Egan.

Just want to say that i'm so proud of the players. They went out on most fought like dogs for everything.
Yeah Dempsey two saves in the 1st (which were awesome). keep us in the game.
I thought our half forward line look great. Kinsella and Murphy were outstanding from start to finish.
Our midfield was nowhere to be seen. But in fairness to Nolan and Mulronney. one a half forward and the other a full forward.

I have a few question after the match.

Why wasn't Kinsella not given some game time againist Laois and if he was injured why was on the bench?

How can Conneely go from not been in the match day squad to starting and was Conneely training all year?

Farrell was given a promotion since Laois game for coaches to selector. Its funny to listen to Brian Whelehan after saying that Fox left because management need to have clear boundary. Farrell is the exception to that rule i guess or was it that Farrell was at the door as well and they need something to make him stay?

Finally. The news that Brian Whelehan want to stay as manager for another year.
http://www.hoganstand.com/ArticleForm.aspx?ID=240440

a really disappointing year but a few good thing have come out of it.
Shortt look like a good full back.
Nolan looks like his long term position is in the half forward line.
Murphy and Kinsella looks like he can play at intercounty level.

Things in Offaly are not as bad as the manager want us to believe.
If the Manager team do not return we may even be able build around some of the players that "Cody wouldn't be able to manage" and a few Whelehan has developed.
The important thing is to get Derek Morkan and a few more of the half back in the county back.
We need to find a working midfield they no point in putting forwards in there.

Honestly, I believe that Whelehan will be re-appointed. The county board have make there position clear over the last 18 months they believe that the problem is with the players not the management of the players. which is a bit mad cause the management can not even get along with themselves. I.E. Ger Coughlan and Damien Fox.

during the game sat eve as we were painfully exposed and outclassed i looked around and seen very few offaly fans.the few who were there looked sheepish and embarrassed with what we were witnessing.i thought back to the great days flaherty and all the songs we sang about him.how we were sick beating kilkenny every second year..the great minors, thurles 98, croker 98 v kilkenny some day, whelehans brilliance ,pilkington and his not give a shite attitude,martin hanemy putting the red helmet in his pocket year after year, hammering kilkenny in 95 , the pure hurling battles v cork 99/00 ,the crack on dorset street before and after. its gone . its really very very depressing

Good time to address this point. The Clare v Offaly 1990s rivalry thrashed out in the media all of last week last week gave the game on Saturday an added slow car crash feel.

The big Clare teams of the 90s … Wolf Tomes, Sixmilebridge, Clarecastle, Doora Barefield. The repreentaion on the Clare team today and since is proof that the game spread far and wide as a result of the success of the 90s.

By contrast … and with exceptions aside …. the powers that be in OY Gaa did absolutely nothing to shift the Blueball border and capitalise on the good times.

Here’s the teams with clubs from the42.ie website (love the way the lay out the teams as they lined out on the field and not 1-15. 2 Sixmilebridge and 1 Wolfe Tones in the 22.

If there is no willingness to develop hurling in the urban centres of the county and to embrace the best practice of others outside the county (Paudie Butler, Dublin Country Board, Clare Country Board, Waterford Country Board) in doing so we will be a perpetual Christy Ring contenders and nothing more. It’s time to face that reality and only then can the culture (to use Che Cheddars expression) and mind-set change.

Well done to players and management for the effort they put in this year as all years. Any blame directed at them is intemperate and lazy.

I am not going to criticise the team and management, I would like to thank them for their efforts over the year.
Its not an easy time to play for Offaly, with all the negativity that is floating around the county. We need to fast track a development plan, last year and Dermot Healy PR show needs to upgraded to something more substantial.

Anyone notice that Offaly only did a 12 minute warm up! Seems strange at this level
and another replied
Only got into the ground after 6.30 for some reason. Not sure if intentional or traffic delay.
Anyone know where were they? They appeared to be gathering in Birr town centre around 3.30pm.
Pat Donegan. Signed out of respect for players and all involved with Offaly.

Fair play for your dedication and support always for Offaly hurlers. Agree with your comments re centre of excellence, and fine stadium in Tullamore, highly regarded by supporters all over Ireland. A huge improvement on what was there before.

Yeah they warmed up on another pitch, can't remember where, because the football was on before. Don't worry, they didn't loose because they were not warmed up.

Not the biggest deals in the world, it might be slightly puzzling but who knows the factors at work.
Maybe there was injuries or strains, maybe they showed up very well in training, maybe the management felt the circumstances of this game suited them better.

It's like how Kilkenny sprung Walter Walsh from far down the bench to being a key forward for the 2012 All Ireland replay. Were the same questions fired at Cody?
