Offaly v Kildare, Senior football qualifier, 4th July

Post by Kemo Sabe »

We have nothing to fear from kildare ,even before todays game against Dublin knew they were no great shakes ,we need to get our forwards running at pace at their defenders, midfield will be even enough but if niall smith turns up we are more than capable of coming out on top ,kildare are fragile the best of times so hopefully after today even more so .need a big crowd in saturday to support the team and send kildare back over the border with their tail between their legs ,
great history hoping for a better future

Is Niall McNamee going to be fit for this one?

Pity it's not an evening throw in that would get a bigger crowd and a better buzz.
The Tyrone game 2 years was played at the same time and it felt very flat and the Offaly performance matched the vibe.

If Offaly put in the effort on Saturday, they can win. Kildare won't be a pushover, they will see Offaly as very beatable.
I'm hoping for an all out effort by The Faithful 15 at the weekend.

We were roughed up by this bunch in 2012 and 2013.

If we believe we've improved, this would be a great chance to show it.

Forget about Dublin performance and the 6 day turnaround. Kildare expected to lose and would already have been mentally readying themselves for the qualifiers. The 6 day issue affects teams who thought they in with a shout of provincial honours and then have to get over the disappointment.

Kildare actually kicked a few decent scores against the Dubs and got in around their full back line a few times. They had no hunger or aggression in their defending when Dublin swamped forward though.

In the McGeeney era, despite the hype, Kildare never beat a county in the top 7 or 8, but on the other hand they didn't lose to any of the bottom order counties in the qualifiers either. There may be a lot of negativity about Jason Ryan, but really he has only dropped Kildare down a few notches on the ladder. They are a Division 2 county normally and I'd expect them to be back up there next year. So I'd expect a tough challenge from them.

In other years the fitness of Niall McNamee would have been crucial, but this year the scoring burden and the attacking gameplan has featured more of the other forwards. If Offaly are to win, it'll be have to be a massive team effort. Every player on the team working like a dog. The qualifiers are a different animal than championship. The more local venues and the partisan crowds help ensure this.

The shocks occur when the underdog absolutely dogs the favourites for 70 minutes and the favourites can't get a minute to clear their heads. Offaly have rarely ambushed in the qualifiers but the performances against Down in 2010 and Monaghan in 2011 are stand out ones that encouragement can be drawn from.

Very much agree were massive underdogs , but that all that does is mounts more pressure on Kildare , a loss hear would be considered an embarrassment for the lillies wouldn't it ?

If we can start well and go in at the break in a positive mind frame , Kildare who are very low on confidence may start to doubt themselves .

The first few minutes are vital we must hit the ground running, if Kildare go 5- 6 points up in the first 20 minutes there support will get behind them and they will see the game out, on the contrary if we are ahead or go in level at the break our supporters could make OCP a difficult place to be for a Kildare man .

Man on man would see something like this , obviously if Niall's not available Eoin Carroll or Conor Mac would go midfield and Guilfoyle centre forward , The lads on there day are well able to match these guys , the Kildare half back line needs to be curtailed coming forward and spraying good ball into that forward line , if we can cut out the space and fight like dogs you wouldn't know what would happen Saturday , Im looking forward to it Best of luck to Pat and the lads.

Kildare knocked up 14 points against the Dubs. Fogarty looks like he will cause a lot of problems. Kildare will expect to finish in top 2 in div 3 next yr. If Offaly finish anywhere from 6 up it will be progress.
I wouldnt be expecting a win but it could happen if everyone performs to their best. The performance will the most important thing for me.

Agree here. Would add that if we go out with a plan and mindset to win the game it will show in the performance.

Must not let Kildare put up a few scores early on. Offaly must put pressure on from start.

Offaly team named
Offaly (All-Ireland SFC Qualifiers Round 2A): Alan Mulhall; Brian Darby, Paul McConway, Cian Donohue; Niall Darby, Johnny Moloney, Joseph O’Connor; Conor McNamee, Niall Smith; Peter Cunningham, Graham Guilfoyle, Anton Sullivan; Bernard Allen, Nigel Dunne, William Mulhall.

No Niall on named team?

Yes, a massive loss. I think Niall should be played no where other than the full forward line because that's where he is at his best. Not as a half forward trying to scrap for ball and working back to defend. The 3 lads inside have done well enough this year in Division 4 football. But McNamee is a real intercounty standard inside forward and the one player Kildare would fear and they do fear him.

I would also prefer to see Sullivan on the inside line. He gets on quiet a bit of ball out the field and looks great burning players with speed but the downside is Offaly are not controlling midfield enough so the oppositions half backs are on the front foot and need to be picked up. I hope to see our half forwards working more efficiently.

Kildare fully expect to win this one. Last week they went in expecting to lose. Probably didn't get any bit of luck in the first half either. Pressure is on Kildare big time. Offaly have to bring some aggression and full concentration.
