So how'd the players do!!

Padraic Kelly put the heart across everybody a few times but got away with it.

Paul McConway had a pleasing debut as a starter, coming into it as the game went on.
James Rafferty sometimes looked at sea but never panicked and survived.
Barry Mooney gambled a bit but showed up well and scored 2 priceless pts

Tomas O'Connor played steadily and unspectacularly, promising.
Scott Brady wasn't moving well on the soft ground but won a lot of ball as the spare man (Louth withdrew a forward into their backs)
Nigel Grennan worked hard, used his pace and got on the ball a lot.

Neville Coughlan - settled the team with fine run for first point, good display until withdrawn with groin strain, could have got more frees from ref.
Padraic Bracken - good moments in possession but was turned far too easily by opponents, finally lost patience and got a yellow card for putting his arms around a Louth player and throwing him to the ground. Will learn, I'm sure!

John Reynolds - brilliant in first half, never hid in second and scored clinching goal at the end.
Ciaran McManus - worked hard and got on the ball a lot in the 2nd half, great through ball for Shaper's goal.
Leonard Mooney - once again linked up intelligently, worked hard when Offaly didn't have it, ran hard on and off the ball when Offaly had it.

Colm Quinn - scored one dream point with right foot (yes, I did say right foot) from the left corner, linked up and retained possession well but slowed down the play at times.
Ross Connor - great hands, laid off quickly and intelligently, scored a point straight as an arrow off angle of crossbar and post from near byline on left hand side, was moved out to midfield and did o.k.
Gary Mahon - had some bright moments but missed some gettable corner forward balls

Subs
Sean Ryan - carried the ball bravely into a pocket of players a few times and came out with the ball or a free. His pace was noticeable even on the soft ground and the other players could have used him a bit more.
Thomas Deehan - didn't take on shots against the wind but as usual did some good things and made intelligent runs.
Derek Molloy - wasn't on very long.

Offaly won a lot of ball by dispossessing Louth as Louth over-elaborated or profitting from the Louth short kickouts. Even in the 2nd half playing with a gale force breeze Louth paused over frees or kickouts for 20 or 30 seconds while they tried to create a spare man - the Louth fans were pulling their hair out with frustration.

The Offaly first half display was goodish - didn't panic after conceding a soft goal, chipped away with the points, could have had a goal or two.

In contrast Offaly went about 30 minutes in the second half without scoring and were let off the hook by the deserved sending off of Darren Clarke ten minutes from the end. Time and again the ball was worked to midfield and then lost in contact or ballooned high & long over sideline, endline or into the arms of the waiting Louth defenders- strange tactics playing against the breeze. Free-taking was poor all through.

Still they toughed it out and you could see the younger players learning as the game went on!
