yea good team but still missing a few certs for championship in niall mac ,anton and niall smith...i like cooneys thinking in biulding a new team
id b worried about mulhall at full forward tho...hope he goes well tho cos he does be very good for the island. whats the team and panel in full i only heard half of it...??????

Just wondering if another player has ever played intercounty football in goals and at full forward? I reckon Alan Mulhall might be a serious option for us this year as a full forward, plus he's a handy free taker too!!

That's an interesting one alright. Alan is a talented footballer there's no doubt but in my opinion I reckon he just doesn't have the pace to play outfield at inter county level. Not running him down I think the goals could be his best spot.

Has anybody seen Brian Hanamy play, is he any good?

It will be interesting to see how Mulhall goes at full forward and will they stick him in their in the league, if the ball is played in to him properly he could be dangerous and he might be worth having in the forwards for his freetaking alone as Offalys freetaking over the last few years has been delplorable.If the ball is played long in to him and he stays near the goals I dont think his lack of pace will be a massive issue.I seem to remember him scroring a goal from full forward a few years ago in the league

Good to see Ger Treacy being called up, any idea who the last Cappincur man to play senior football for Offaly was.

Why was Liam Brennan from Daingean not on the panel, he was outstanding this year for Daingean and is an excellent player and no worse than some others on the panel

Tom Furlong is another. Actually started one of his championship matches in goals and was moved to the forwards at half-time when they were in trouble.

Liam Brennan never attended the trials. Its a pity. Noel Graham Senior or Frankie Brennan could be the last Cappincur men to be involved in Offaly teams from my recllection but am open to correction.

Henry Downey of Derry was the most obvious, but he's a long way back now. Tom Kelly of Laois always looked small to me, but then that could be deceptive. No-one else jumping to mind to be honest.

The Donegal 92 centre back was small enough if i can remember correctly, cant think of his name Martin Gavigan by any chance??. I think the main idea of a centre back is to be able to read the game well and dictate things in relation to communication and organisation. Cathal daly played CHB for OY in the last game he played v Dublin in leinster final in 06 when he came in as a sub after 20 mins. I think that Karl Slattery may also have played there over the last few years. As far as i know Ger Brennan from Dublin is only 5 ft 10 inches. Kildare CB not much bigger but both are quick, mobile and built like a large house with serious power and strength.

Darby is a small guy, but an excellent footballer and reader of the game who gets the most out of himself and has played there for rhode there and done well. as ive said previously I would not let him near corner back though as cribbin and have done as he is just not quick enough as was seen plenty of times in championship in the last few years most noticeably v Limerick last year. Corner back is a specialist position that requires serious pace and athleticism as you are essentially marking some of the oppositions quickest player, ie corner forward. I dont think he has the running speed to get up to championship pace in this position. Pender is very good there because of this, Cathal daly was excellent there too also because of his pace and spring and won an allstar there. Nigel Grennan is probably the best player we have for corner back but is not available unfortunately. Any guy who gets an allstar in this position is savagely quick. I also think that Aidan Keenaghan could do a serious job for Oy here if given a chance due to his pace.

Francie Bellew of armagh says that the only reason that Joe Kernan called him into the armagh team from no place was because of his pace and he was a very limited footballer who never played county till he was about 26/27. In fact if anyone remembers a corner back from clare in 95, (his name was Mike O Halloran) he couldnt hit the ball but had exceptional pace. In fact he couldnt make a cork club team a year later when he transferred to Cork because he was a poor hurler, but loughnane reognised what he needed in a corner back and chose him. I agree with the other poster and think that Brennan from Daingean should be looked at but if he didnt go into trial when called then he misses his opportunity. Unfortunately for him that may never come again given that he is playing junior with his club!!!

I think it is good to see darby tried for the o beirne cup though i think if OY could find a full back that is consistent, paul McConway may be our best option in this position. He has similar qualities to darby, but is bigger, a little faster and possibly an even better reader of the game than Darby due to his extra experience of playing in a half back line..If Mitchell of Clara was committed he would also be a good option for CHB but unfortunately, along with some other talented Clara lads, he is incapable of living the life of an inter county footballer in my opinion. Just my opinion but i wish i could be proved wrong their sake and the counties sake. I have regrets myself of not being as committed as could have been in my own career thus never reaching the heights i could have if i was more committed. a playing career is only a short few years and one should make the most of it from my own experience looking back. BTW was Conor Evans in for trial?? only around the 30/31 mark and had a great year in Dublin club football having played in a Senior final this year with Plunketts?
