Offaly Championship Highlight of 2010

Post by Long John »

Anybody like to share their views on their highlight of the championship in Football and Hurling.

Mine would have to be the following:

Football: Niall McNamee's demolision job on Clara
Hurling: Brosna Gaels shock win over Clareen

Football: Definitely have to agree with you on the football Long John . Sheer quality that was. He emphasised how far he is ahead of everyone in the county (perhaps his nearest threats being the sprightly anton sullivan & the ever consisten pj ward), and i feel we should sit back and enjoy as players of this quality are rare, especially around these parts of late!!

Hurling: Have to disagree there Long John. Although pullagh did show some early signs of positivity, this year showed that intermediate teams are just not ready for the step up yet. Although Clareen are a good team, they are very very young and the ref (wont name him here!) gave a few questionable decisions that day which can be especially demoralising for young players. Pullagh were eventually dumped out by either shamrocks or belmont in the relegation p/o! It must be said they will probably be back up senior next year as inter is fairly poor the last few years especially now as the drummies are up!

The highlight of my year was coolderry's style of hurling throughout the year.. Their skill levels were like a breath of fresh air for offaly hurling and with tidy young hurlers all over the field they are sure to be the team to beat for the next decade!

Doesn't say much for offaly hurling or look good if Coolderry are the team to beat for the next decade after a poor enough Raharney team
bet them well this year in the club championship it will be a long Decade so. :(

thats a very good point townman .
however being at that match i feel coolderry were hard done by on a good few decisions.. that beig said an offaly team should never be losing to a wastemeath team with all due respect
if coolderry were to play the same team next year i'd be confident!

Coolderry did play some nice hurling but let themselves down terribly against Raharney. Too much celebrations after the county final success was the biggest problem. Raharney were well motivated with Davey Fitz having a big part in keeping them focused and push on from their county final win.

Brosna Gaels I agree are very poor, their a very limited team lets be honest about it, but it was truely brilliant to see them beat Clareen. I went to the game as a neutral wanting to see what all this hype about Clareens "super young hurlers" was about. What I witnessed was an ignorance from the clareen supporters at a level I have never witnessed before. They clearly not only had no respect for Brosna but for hurling teams from the more footballing areas of the county. I ended up shouting passionately for Brosna as I couldnt listen to the crap some middle aged men from Clareen were throwing and actually had strong words with some of the clowns. As for the result, well lets look at it this way, Clareen have been talked about as genuine contenders and Brosna were always expected to be in a relegation dogfight, what transpired was a very gutsy determined display from a group of players that played well above themselves. That only happens once in a while for many teams and it was a joy to be there on the day.
