Lusmagh GAA Official Opening - Sunday May 9th

Post by lusmagh »

After years of hard work and months of organising, Sunday May 9th sees us have the Official Opening of our new Clubhouse. The building comprises of 4 large dressing rooms, referees room, committee room & kitchen aswell as ladies, gents and wheelchair accessible toilets. We have also added turnstiles and dugouts aswell as a hurling wall.

The ceremony will be performed by An Taoiseach, Brian Cowen and will be followed by a Senior hurling challenge between Offaly and Clare. Both management teams have expressed a desire to field as close to championship lineups as possible, so it promises to be a very entertaining game 3 weeks in advance of Offalys Leinster Championship opener with Antrim.

There will be Primary School exhibition games at half-time in the main event and a jam packed 56 page Souvenier Programme available on the day.

We look forward to seeing as many of you as can make it on the day.

Regards,
Lusmagh GAA

PS - I have a pdf image which I would like to attach to this post and would appreciate if someone in the know could tell me how to do so. Thanks

The opening ceremony is at 5.30. Match is timed for 6pm.

Come one, come all, as they say.

Anyone looking for directions - head for Banagher and follow the traffic :)

If the teams line out as per the lists here, this should be a good workout for both teams!
Hopefullly David Kenny is left at center back for the summer. Anyone know if Brendan Murphy is anywhere near ready for championship hurling???

Lusmagh have a lovely job done out there, fair play to them.......always enjoyed playing there!

POTH was in the lusmagh dressing rooms in the last week, and the facilities are now worthy of the Lusmagh Club, I hope sunday goes well for ye, im sure it will and hopefully ye will start providing a few more hurlers to this generation of offaly senior hurlers soon!

2 things there. I agree that David Kenny is the best candidate for centre half back and he should line out there in Lusmagh and against Antrim. Looking down the road a bit, he's also the best candidate to mark joe Canning should Offaly and Galway justify favouritism at the end of the month. That's for another day though.

As for Brendan Murphy, bear in mind he hasn't hurled at all this year; in fact I think he has only played 2 matches since the defeat to Cork last July - for Ballyskenagh against Tullamore & Lusmagh last September. He's woefully short of match practice and my opinion is he's looking at the qualifiers before he makes a real go at it. A pity because fully fit he'd be dependable.

The good wishes should be directed to the club rather than me. The new clubrooms are the final piece of a long term development. The club decided, rightly, to develop the hurling surface first and thankfully that has been a success. The timber dressing rooms erected at that time and were intended as a temporary measure (to last five years if memory serves), while the stand followed in 1998ish. Over time the old dressing rooms became delapidated and finally, the clubrooms have come to fruition. Hopefully they will be there for generations to come.

Cordial came on for Dooley on the hour mark. Good news this.......a real classy hurler who would have been at home on the Offaly team of the 90's. May not be a starter to could be a good impact sub with some little flicks and touches when the play breaks up......we are lacking this bit of sylish play.

Also great to see Stephen Browne back in with offaly another skillfull hurler who has still a lot to give to offaly hurling.
if he stays at it could be on the team for the championship as we lack in the forwards big time.

Very well done to POTH and the Lusmagh club for a very proffessionally run evening, lovely grounds, great parking, good turn out and a magnificent booklet on the history of Lusmagh GAA which makes very interesting reading. It was my first time in Lusmagh and I must say I fell in love with it straight away :D WELL DONE AGAIN POTH.

Lá na gClub 2010 won’t be forgotten for a long time to come in Lusmagh. A great weekend for the parish, starting with a presentation to the 1989 winning county final team on Saturday night. Next morning after mass we had the blessing of the new dressing rooms and then on Sunday evening was the main event – the official opening of the clubrooms by the local TD, Taoiseach Brian Cowen.

There was a large & varied crowd there – regular matchgoers, parents of the children and those who went along to see and hear Brian Cowen. All would have went home reasonably happy with the events. The Taoiseach stayed for the match and was in no hurry away as he mingled happily with his constituents!

I feel the spontaneous welcome for the Clare team by way of applause as they emerged from their dressing room through the crowd gathered in front of the clubrooms was a particular highlight.

Great credit should go to the organising committee for their organisation of all the events both in the lead-up and on the weekend. All should help to reinforce the community spirit locally. Only looking back now, one realises what a big task it was. There was a superb programme for the occasion too, to please the collectors among us!

Finally, while no individuals were singled out for particular praise for the development (correctly so) it’s only right to acknowledge the work of Tom Larkin and Michael Bennett, who were club secretary and chairman respectively during the construction phase of the clubhouse. It was their leadership and drive during their term which really made it all possible.
