The Camogie thread

Post by Plain of the Herbs »

I took myself along to see the Offaly camogie side take on Tipperary today, and found it well worthwhile as the girls provided some good hurling and came from behind late on to win by a point, 0-14 to 0-13.

The sides were level at half time, 0-6 each, though Offaly had more of the play, more scoring chances and should have been ahead by about 4 at that stage.

The second half proceeded in the same trend, and though the sides traded scores early in the half, Offaly pulled ahead to lead 11-8 going into the final quarter. A scoring burst which yielded 4 points put Tipperary into a 1 point lead, 11-12 as injury time approached but Offaly finished the stronger.

Elaine Dermody levelled from a tricky free and put Offaly ahead, again from a free, a minute later and Jean Brady put Offaly 2 up. Tipperary pulled a point back but they ran out of time and Offaly prevailed.

The ‘best full forward line in Offaly hurling’ I alluded to in another thread has been broken up, with Arlene Watkins now at midfield where she hurled well, firing over 2 points from distance, and Elaine Dermody is now at centre half forward where she exerted a good influence on the game.

There were many highlights of the game, not least Michaela Morkan’s hurling at centre back. She really is a classy hurler and her dominance in the air, her covering play and her moving-forward on the ball were a pleasure to watch. Beside her, Shiela Sullivan gave a storming performance, while Fiona Stephens was the pick of the full back line.

Eleanor Clendennen was sound in goal, making one good save and catching a few under the crossbar and clearing well. She took a severe dunt by way of a late tackle after a good catch and clearance late in the game. Actually it was a tough match, tougher than I thought and the girls didn’t spare the timber either!

Marion Crean did better when moved to midfield while Arlene Watkins was good throughout. The forward line revolved around Elaine Dermody who won much ball and distributed well and struck the frees well, while Michelle Davis and Siobhan Flannery were always a threat.

Both Offaly and Tipperary had won both their earlier matches and with the other 2 matches in the group finishing level today, Offaly are well positioned to finish top of this group. They play Antrim next at a halfway venue, while they have Cork at home, which I think is on Easter Sunday. It would be well worth ye’re while going along. Google ‘Offaly camogie’, the fixtures are there.

Shure any day you beat Tipperary has to be a good day :D

Offaly: Eleanor Clendennen; Fiona Stephens, Lorraine Keena, Karen Brady; Shiela Sullivan (0-1), Michaela Morkan, Marion Crean; Arlene Watkins (0-2), Linda Sullivan; Aoife Kelly, Elaine Dermody (0-7, 4f, 1 ‘45’), Michelle Davis (0-2); Jean Brady (0-1), Karen Nugent, Siobhan Flannery (0-1). Subs: Michelle Gleeson for Kelly (1st qtr.), Aoife Corrigan for Gleeson (3rd qtr.), Orlagh Kirwan for Nugent (4th qtr).

Another great win for the girls today. The beat Antrim in belfast by a single point. Final score 4-11 to 5-7.

So now Offaly are through to the league final! They still have to play cork but are unbeaten so far so they have their spot in the final. :D

I heard the updates on the radio. Fair play to Cóilín Duffy for covering the game en route to the Laois v Antrim NHL match.

Offaly led 2-9 to 2-4 at half time and scored 1-1 early in the second half to extend the lead to 9. Antrim shook them with goals and it took an Elaine Dermody goal 4 minutes into stoppage time to nick it.

They’re now 3 points clear of nearest rivals Derry with one round remaining. Seems only one team advance from each group.

Yep they have one game left before the final, cork at home as far as i know.

Looks like they are going to be playing Wexford in the final! They are top of the group and are in a similar position to offaly, they have one game left but are sure of their place in the final.

Also looks like Tina Hannon will be back from Injury in time for the final 2! Fantastic player, Offaly will need their best 15 if they are to overcome Wexford!
They were lucky to win against Antrim, few soft goals turn things for Antrim according to Joachim's interview!

Hopefully there will be a better turnout for their next game, apparently they had 3 supporters in Belfast!! :D
Would be nice for a big crowd to go support them in the final :D :D

Meant to post this earlier in the week. The best forward line in Offaly hurling were in top form against Cork, Siobhan Flannery, Elaine Dermody and Arlene Watkins clocking up Offaly's entire tally of 3-14. Flannery scored 2-7, Dermody 1-4 and Watkins 0-2.

If you're at a loose end tomorrow, rather than sitting in to watch soccer on d'telly you could go along to watch the girls take on Wexford in the first round of the Intermediate championship.

The match throws in at 3pm in Banagher. It's repeat of the recent league final when Wexford won. Best wishes to all concerned.

Wexford 1-10 Offaly 1-8

Post by Plain of the Herbs »

A disappointing performance by Offaly where too many leaders couldn’t get into the game. Offaly started better and full-forward Karen Nugent’s goal gave them an early 1-3 to 0-0 lead, Siobhán Flannery having opened with two good points.

A Nugent point extended the lead but they didn’t score for the remainder of the half as Wexford came into it with a Bridget Curran goal and by half time they were level 1-4 each.

Wexford extended their lead to tree, 1-7 to 1-4 before Michaela Morkan came into it and Offaly were level by the 47th minute, 1-7 each. Offaly couldn’t take the lead despite several positional switches in attack, and it was Wexford who resumed control and had restored a three point lead, 1-10 to 1-7 with five minutes to go.

Offaly pressed hard during those dying moments. An Elaine Dermody free reduced the gap to two points. Their best chance of a winner came when Elaine Dermody got on the end of a passing move but as she prepared to shoot for goal saw the ball well flicked away by a defender. Offaly did have other chances, including two 45s but were unable to convert.

An Offaly winner would have been rough justice on Wexford who were faster, stronger and created more scoring chances. Indeed Wexford could have had three or four goals themselves but for some brilliant goalkeeping by Audrey Kennedy. Ciara O’Connor scoring three points from 45s says much of Wexford’s pressure.

Offaly now face Galway next Saturday, a match they must win to keep their semi-final hopes alive. They’ve now lost three on the trot – Wexford (league final), Kilkenny seniors (Leinster championship) and today. Galway today beat Kilkenny 3-8 to 3-6. Offaly face a difficult task to turn things around in a week.

Offaly: Audrey Kennedy; Fiona Stephens, Lorraine Keena, Karen Brady; Sheila Sullivan, Michaela Morkan, Linda Sullivan; Marion Crean, Arlene Watkins; Tina Hannon, Elaine Dermody (0-4, 3f), Siobhán Flannery (0-3); Aoife Kelly, Karen Nugent (1-1), Jean Brady. Sub: Michelle Davis for Kelly.

I heard on Galway Bay FM this evening that the Galway match is on Friday evening (18th) in Banagher at 7pm, probably because Galway seniors are playing Tip’rary on Saturday and the hurling is on Sunday.

Apparently Galway came from 7 points behind to beat Kilkenny on Saturday. Interesting thing is that Galway won the Intermediate last year and so cannot field any of last year’s team. Consequently only 4 of their team are over 18 so all might not be lost.

4 teams in the group, 2 go through. Wexford and Galway have already beaten Offaly and kilkenny respectively, so wins for Galway (over Offaly) and Wexford (over Kilkenny) next weekend would settle the group with a round to spare.

Close Ballinamereman, 2-17 to 1-5.

It was a good result, wasnt really the girls best game either. They were ahead by 2-9 to 0-3 at half time and then in the second half they eased off, still a comfortable win! The ref was 25 mins late starting the game and a Kilkenny player got injured in the first few minutes which stopped the play for at least 5 Minutes and i think the waiting around didnt help either team.

So now they are through to the All Ireland semi final which isnt going to be played until mid August. Hopefully we will see them back in Croke Park in Sept for all ireland day now that the Intermediate final is on the same day as the rest! Joachim is doing fantastic work with the team, they only won the Junior last year and now they are competing in an intermediate all ireland semi, fair play to them!
