McNamee hits top gear to leave Cats reeling

Offaly 4-22 Kilkenny 1-6

Offaly managed to survive an early shock that saw rank outsiders Kilkenny open up a surprise fourth minute lead of 1-1 to 0-1 before taking control to register their anticipated runaway win against bottom of the table Kilkenny.

The Midlanders quickly recovered from Philip Roche's early goal, with David Egan netting twice in the space of two minutes, and from that stage onwards the result was never in doubt.

Offaly opened up an interval lead of 2-12 to 1-4 and they remained on top in the game throughout the second-half, adding a further 2-10 and restricting their visitors to a mere 0-2.

Both their second-half goals were scored from the in-form Niall McNamee, who managed to finish the encounter with a fine personal contribution of 2-7.

As for Kilkenny. Eddie Brennan got 5 frees. Good to see him giving the footballer a dig out.
I pity the Kilkenny football lads because of the derision they are held in, within their own county.
Obviously hurling is weak in most counties, but you rarely experience the same glee held towards the misfortunes of the weaker code, as you do in Kilkenny.

Eddie Brennan the footballer is from Castlecomer and apparently is a son of Mick 'Cloney' Brennan, who featured in the 1974 All-Ireland shown on All-Ireland Gold on Saturday night last and who hurled against Offaly in the 1982 Leinster Final.

This is more hurling in north offaly than football in kilkenny.

I know several Kilkenny GAA(or hurling) people. There is a mixture of disinterested, mildly disappointed that Kilkenny don't put in a better show. However a huge amount of Kilkenny people seem to take pride in having no interest in football, are happy that Kilkenny not bothering with it and ridicule the people involved with Kilkenny football.

This is what I've experienced and this has been related to me by Kilkenny football players also.
Granted a lot of this is probably a big front. If your county are bad at a sport, best to let on that you are not bothered, than make a genuine fist at improving matters.

What's worse is how front line Kilkenny spokesmen always seem cock sure that no one is interested in football down there. The football club players would tell you different. These are the poor unfortunates who have to play out their championship in Spring, so it won't interfere with the hurling fixtures.

The Footballing Eddie Brennan is one great free-taker from his hands. I'd say that he probably accounts for over 50% of Kilkenny scores during the League.

Yesterday was a waste of time. Kilkenny and London are wasting everyones time as well as their own when we see the rabble they both put out on the field in this League. Hammering after hammering in every game for the two of them. What's the point.

Easy win at the weekend but was very disappointed with the management!! Only used one sub in a game when the 5subs should have been getting a run. A perfect game to give the likes of gerry grehan, wille and alan mulhall, rory connor, pj ward and sean ryan a game. W. mulhall in particular is being hard done by not getting a run in my opinion. These young lads need to be treated properly and nursed into senior football because they are going to be there for the forseeable future, anyone agree?? Cant understand why they would risk playing n. mcnamee in a match like this. We are also after loosing ken casey one of the best prospects in the county because of the way the management treated him against waterford.

I would guess his priorities are

1. Win Div 4
2. Dont loose to Westmeath
3. Dont get emabarrassed by Dublin.

After that everything is a bonus.

Looks like he has achieved 1., not overly confident of achieving 2., but if he does, then theres a good chance he'll achieve 3.

But can you see him being in charge in 3 - 5 years time ?
