I suppose we need to be realistic in relation to the coverage of the hurlers.

No point in saying we are fans when no more than a few hundred go to the league games.

But I can say this, I have refused to listen to Midlands 103 since I was subjected to some local gobshite discussing the premiership on it. Now don't get me wrong, I enjoy soccer as much as the next man and will be glued to it tonight, but the Lord Jaysus, listening to some local lads discussing the merits of Newcastle and Leicester is nearly as cringy as your father trying to be cool in front of your mates!

Can't think of the chaps name on 103 that annoyed me so much, think it could be Stephen something or other! Aaaaaargh!

Offaly GAA Twitter, Mary Dunne and some others are the best bet for keeping up with what's happening.
Midlands Radio can be hit and miss. Most of the time they manage to get coverage but other times the match you're interested in plays second fiddle to something of minority interest.

Back to the match. Offaly may have lost it injury time, but far more importantly Offaly fought back from a deficit and gained the lead late on.
In recent history, it is very rare that Offaly as underdogs have managed to do this.

Now the important matches start. No point in wasting a decent showing on Antrim if we slip up in other fixtures.

Yep, that's it.

Best of luck to the hurlers today, really need to get a big win in case it comes down to points difference.

Lot of changes in the team in all games played, had a very settled team last year. One game at a time so let’s get the win first.

It was easy have a settled team last year considering the quality of opposition.

Big difference this year when some players are being found not to be at the required level.

Offaly 2-22 Meath 0-19

RTÉ Sport journalist

Offaly got their Joe McDonagh Cup campaign off the mark with a routine win over Meath in Tullamore on Saturday afternoon.

Having lost to Antrim in their first game, Offaly had to win and they did so with a stuttering, unconvincing display and Michael Fennelly has a lot of work to do if Offaly are to get back into the top tier.

It was a very mixed bag by Offaly at times. They took some excellent scores but were also guilty of slipping into cruise control, not keeping their foot to the pedal.

Offaly had first use of a strong wind in the first half and it took them a few minutes to settle down. Meath led twice in the opening few minutes before Offaly got in front for the first time with points from Jason Sampson and Adrian Cleary. Jack Regan, who got eight of Meath's first half points from frees, made it 0-4 to 0-03 but Offaly then got 1-04 without reply with David Nally getting the goal in the 16th minute.

That gave Offaly a 1-06 to 0-03 lead. Leon Fox got in for a soft 23rd minute goal as Offaly led by 2-08 to 0-04. They were 2-11 to 0-5 ahead after 27 minutes and should have pulled out of sight from here.

Instead, they got a bit sloppy, conceding some carelss frees and Regan got five frees as Meath got the gap back to 2-14 to 0-10 at half time.

Nearly all of the good hurling was played in the first half. The second half got very scrappy, very disjointed and the entertainment levels dipped considerably for the spectators.

Meath's goose had been cooked when full back Shane Brennan was red carded for his role in an unnecessary melee just after the restart. With referee Michael Kennedy blowing for well in excess of ten illegal hand passes, it was a very stop-start affair and neither side could find any momentum.

As the game wore on and it became clear that they could not be beaten, Offaly were guilty of going through the motions. They kept Meath at arm's length for most of it. They were 2-18 to 0-11 ahead at the three quarter way stage and 2-21 to 0-13 clear after 59 minutes when John Murphy pointed after sub Brian Duignan had drawn a fine save from Charlie Ennis and Duignan then added his own point.

Offaly really eased off after this and without doing anything remotely spectatcular, Meath got five points without reply before the winners got the final score when Brian Duignan blasted over when he had goal on his mind.

Offaly: Stephen Corcoran; Padraig Cantwell, Ciaran Burke, David King; Jack Screeney, Ben Conneely, Eimhin Kelly; Leon Fox (1-1), Joey Keenaghan (0-1); Adrian Cleary, (0-3) Eoghan Cahill (0-9, 5f), Killian Sampson (0-1); David Nally (1-2, 1f, Jason Sampson (0-2), Paddy Clancy.

Subs - Eoghan Parlon for Cantwell (H/T), Ross Ravenhill for Kenaghan (H/T), John Murphy (0-1) for Clancy (51m), Brian Duignan (0-2) for Cleary (56m), Sean Cleary for Nally (71m),

Meath: Charlie Ennis Sean Geraghty, Shane Brennan, Brendan McKeon; Stephen Morris, Damien Healy, James Kelly; Padraig O'Hanrahan (0-1), David Reilly (0-1); Jack Walsh, Nicholas Potterton, Mark O'Sullivan (0-1); Mickey Cole, Jack Regan (0-14, 12f) Eamon O'Donnchada (0-2).

Subs – Ger Murphy for McKeon, 50m), Justin Coyne for Potterton (52m), Patrick Potterton for Reilly (54m), Trevor Healy for Morris (64m), Chris Reilly for Walsh (70m),

Referee: Michael Kennedy (Tipperary).

It was a breezy day, but notable that Meath won the 2nd half by 9 points to 8. Though Meath actually scored more playing into the wind in the first half.

Carlow put 4-30 past Meath last Saturday and then lost by 15 points to Kerry today, in Carlow.
All appearance now are that Offaly have two big tests away from home against Down and Kerry.

The Kerry team that Offaly beat by 21 points last year was very depleted and that result will have no relevance this year.

Jesus lads it would be some turn up if kerry overcame a 21 point deficit from last year, would be some indictment if we let that happen

Would derry really be considered a tough away game, I’d have thought KK or rynaghs would have beaten them

It will be a lot closer. Kerry are a different team to that 21 point defeat team

Kerry absolutely hammered Meath today, we were not ruthless enough against a 14 man Meath side. By all accounts Kerry are starting to go up the gears at the right time.
Carlow only beaten by a goal by Antrim, our remaining games will be very hard

We were organized and ready to hit the ground running out of COVID. We did so against modest competition and got the job done. It seems some of the others have been busy getting their houses in order. Yes it won’t be easy. Nobody will be giving us anything.

UP OFFALY!!!

The Down game is at 1 pm, a tough game, Offaly need to win. We have Carlow at home, and Kerry away.
