Stephen Gavin (1946-1947)

Post by roomiccube »

Hows it going lads,

Bit of a weird one, but I came here to ask about Stephen Gavin, he was my grandfather. He never talked about it with me that I can remember and I don't know much about Offaly GAA history as I grew up in Waterford which is where he moved to when he married. All I know was that he lined out for Offaly in both hurling and football in the championship. If anyone had any info or old squad photos that would be unreal! Sound!

.

There is a record of almost all Offaly Championship teams, in football, from the early Forties, compiled by a regular poster on this site, not me but he shared.

In both 1946 & 47 Offaly footballers had 2 championship games.

In 46 v Westmeath the midfielder, 8, was Stephen Gavin, with his club listed as Birr. In the second game v Laois the left half forward, 12, was Stephen Gavin

In 47 v Carlow he does not appear, In the second game v Laois the right half forward, 10, was Stephen Gavin.

So your information is correct regarding football. I cant assist re the hurling but there are a few who post here who might

This Forum is part of a website and it list all those who played hurling and football, League & Championship, for Offaly from apprx 1941.

Stephen is listed with 6 appearances and as scoring 3 goals, or 3 for the hurlers & 3 for the footballers, in 46/47.

Just google www.uibhfhaili.com and you have all the info at your disposal !!!

Should have told you all this first time around but got lost in the chase for the football info !!!

I’ll just chip in with what I found:
Stephen Gavin made 3 championship appearances for the footballers in 1946 and 1947 while also lining out with the hurlers and being part of Birr’s 6-in-11 years of the 1940s.

Good Luck

I think the format is Champ apps-League apps. So 3 in each code in the championship I’d reckon.
Good Luck

Does anyone have those 6 Birr teams?

While I was not born until after 47 I heard of many of the footballers of the forties but I dont know anything of the hurlers from that era..

Ah legend, hadn't realised that! Well there you go, seems he did line out for both! I must see if I can find anything out about when he played for Birr!

Those Birr lineouts appear in the 2012 Birr history, Magic Memories – Birr GAA Club Through the Lens which is a brilliant, brilliant resource. They may also be in a book I don’t have, Johnny McCormack’s Birr GAA story, which may have been published around Centenary Year. Those winning Birr lineouts also appear in the programme for the 1999 Official opening of the stand.

Hi Roomicube, and thanks for your query. Thanks too to ryot who was quickest on the draw with the relevant information.

Stephen Gavin appears to have played in four finals, winning three. Birr won six titles during that era, in 1938, 1940, 1943, 1944, 1946 and 1948. Stephen Gavin’s three winning years were 1943, 1944 and 1946. Stephen also lined out in the losing Final of 1947. The Magic Memories – Birr GAA Club Through the Lens book features an A4 size b&w photo of the 1944 team.

The order of the team listing bear no relation to each other, and I suspect they are in no particular order. I could be wrong, but there is no consistency with any position. For what it’s worth, SG’s is the 10th name listed in 1943, the 13th in 1944 and the 7th in 1946, while it is 7th in order in 1947.

As for football, he won a Junior football final with Birr CYMS in 1946. And that seems to be it. Perhaps he moved away around 1947 or 1948?

That's brilliant information, that gives me something to chase and try get a hold of that book! Thank you so much for your help. It's also kind of nice to hear that he was part of an important time in Birrs club history! If you have the book would you mind snapping the team photo? If not, no worries!
That makes sense though, he got a job with the ESB in Waterford and I know he married my grandmother there in 1951, so it makes sense that he would have moved away from Birr at the end of the 40's.
