Gilroy stated in his interview Sunday (think it was Verney's from independent or 42.ie) that some of his squad will miss the Offaly game to prepare with UCD and DCU for fitzgibbon cup fixtures on Jan 30th and recover properly from the first two round on the 21st and 24th.

Who these are and what value to bring to his squad, I dont know.. any fitzgibbon hurler is worth a shot on a county panel. I wonder how many offaly have hurling fitzgibbon?

It's more and more commonplace for players to miss league fixtures due to college commitments - many colleges are giving scholarships on that basis, that they get first call while the Sigerson and Fitzgibbon competitions are ongoing. I know for example I was part of a media briefing with Roscommon manager Kevin McStay, and he confirmed that Brian Stack would not be available to him until after DCU were finished their Sigerson campaign.

It's entirely possible that Dublin (and others) could be missing players for this reason.

I don't think Offaly have any hurlers playing Fitzgibbon this year - can anyone confirm?

It gives Gilroy a chance to try players while letting the lads hurl fitzgibbon get extra game time. 3 fitzgibbon games in 2 weeks would bring a lot of players on and I'm sure Gilroy will have eyes on them.

I think young Offaly lads not hurling Fitzgibbon is an issue which needs to be addressed also.

Oisín Kelly hurls with UL/LIT some college in Limerick.

There can be various reasons why Offaly lads aren't hurling fitzgibbon. Over the last number of years our senior hurlers actually haven't had many lads in college which is fine. I think Joey O Conor and Padraic Guinan are the only two that have hurled the last 3 or so years in the competiton...maybe there might be a couple more more but that would be it.
What's concerning is the the amount of lads out of minor who were hurling u21 and couldn't make these fitzgibbon team would be worrying, lads from Wexford, Carlow, Waterford, and Kilkenny all were ahead of them on these college teams.
It will be interesting to see how many we have this year with college teams.
I know Oisin Kelly will be with davy's L.I.T.
But after that I am not sure who we have where..

I believe the only 2 Offaly men to see Fitzgibbom action last year were Paudge Guinan of Drumcullen and Paul Kinsella of Lusmagh.. I didn't see Kinsella mentioned at all however over the summer for lusmagh and I haven't seen Guinan in with Offaly this year, so their participation in this years Fitzgibbon is not certain from my point of view

There is a fact that when lads are in college that they don't want to commit to Fitzgibbon either and also the fact where you come from.

The Limerick and Cork colleges tend to give scholarships to Munster county players and also the managers on these colleges are from these counties. An example is Brian Lohan over UL tends to have a lot of Clare players on his team and panel. Looking after your own eh..!!

So Joey O Conner, Padraig Guinan, Paul Kinsella have played Fitzgibbon and are not on the panel... That asks another question..

Kaiserchief if you are good enough you would be on it...I think there was two or three starter's from Clare for UL last year so your comment like most of your stuff is just made up!!

Davie fitz and Cyril Farrell are over Lit neither of them are from limerick!!!

Greenairfield... you are the one talking the shite here my friend..

the UL team that started fitzgibbon most of last year:

16. Paul Maher (Moyne-Templetuohy, Tipperary)
26. Liam O’Connor (Newmarket-on-Fergus, Clare)
6. Brian Troy (Emeralds, Kilkenny)
4. Gearoid Ryan (Clarecastle, Clare)
21. Jordan Henley (Tallow, Waterford)
3. David Fitzgerald (Inagh/Kilnamona, Clare)
12. Jason Forde (Silvermines, Tipperary)
11. Tony Kelly (Ballyea, Clare)
7. Aidan McGuane (Kilmaley, Clare)
10. Tom Morrissey (Ahane, Limerick)
17. Bobby Duggan (Clarecastle, Clare)
22. John Paul Lucey (Shamrocks, Waterford)
18. David Gleeson (Ballinahinch, Tipperary)
14. Mike Mullins (Gort, Galway)
15. John McGrath (Loughmore-Castleiney, Tipperary)
Subs:
9. Lorcan Lyons (Monaleen, Limerick) for Kelly (half-time)
29. PJ Scully (Borris-in-Ossory/Kilcotton, Laois) for Mullins (half-time)
27. Pat Ryan (Doon, Limerick) for Fitzgerald (half-time)
23. Ronan Lynch (Na Piarsaigh, Limerick) for T Morrissey (half-time)
24. Adrian Morrissey (Liam Mellows, Galway) for McGrath (41)

I count 6 starters here from Clare, 7 of the other 9 are from Munster, 3 of the 5 subs are also from munster..

Davie is director of sport in UL and lives 20km away in Sixmilebridge, which is closer than you are to O Connor Park my friend!!
Again the UL team is flooded with Munster, 7 from Clare.. 13 of 15 from Munster with Laois and Galway lads again..

1. Eibhear Quilligan (Feakle, Clare)
2. Ciaran Cooney (O’Callaghan Mills, Clare)
3. Kieran Bennett (Ballysaggart, Waterford)
4. Cian Nolan (Smith O’Brien’s, Clare)
5. Willie Ryan (Clonakenny, Tipperary)
6. Barry O’Connell (Kildimo-Pallaskenry, Limerick)
7. Diarmaid Byrnes (Patrickswell, Limerick)
8. David Reidy (Éire Óg, Clare)
9. Michael O’Malley (Kilmaley, Clare)
10. Paul Killeen (Galway)
11. Peter Duggan (Clare)
12. Shane Bennett (Waterford)
13. Jamie Shanahan (Clare)
14. Joe Campion (Laois)
15. David Dempsey (Limerick)

I think I've proven my point... out of 30 players from the 2 colleges in Limerick.. there are 13 of them from clare and both managers are clare men.
Now include the fitzgibbon holders Mary I. All from Munster as well..

1. Ciaran Barrett (Clonmel Óg, Tipperary)
2. David Sweeney (Kiladangan, Tipperary)
3. Richie English (Doon, Limerick)
4. Eoin Quirke (captain) (Whitegate, Clare)
5. Conor Twomey (Newtownshandrum, Cork)
6. Ronan Maher (Thurles Sarsfields, Tipperary)
7. Alan Flynn (Kiladangan, Tipperary)
8. Colm Galvin (Clonlara, Clare)
9. Stephen Cahill (Thurles Sarsfields, Tipperary)
10. Darragh O’Donovan (Doon, Limerick)
11. Michael O’Neill (Kilmaley, Clare)
12. Aaron Gillane (Patrickswell, Limerick)
17. Tadhg Gallagher (Kiladangan, Tipperary)
14. Cian Lynch (Patrickswell, Limerick)
22. Luke Meade (Newcestown, Cork)

This is the trend I was highlighting... Looking forward to your response Greenairfield

Correct and right and Mary I is jamie wall from Cork..

How could lads from Offaly stand a chance of playing any these colleges when its all Munster based.. And not good enough is bullshit.. The Gerathys where definitely wont there place on the UL team last year.

Davy is with L.I.T as I said.

I said two or three you said 6 so be it.

Clare and Limerick lads make these teams because they are the better hurlers...gerathys wouldn't be up to making the UL team they can't even make the Offaly team...All ULs forwards are on there county senior team.

So both of us are wrong!!

Yeah I never said he wasn't. I know he is. But he is Clare man living near limerick city.

My point is that Munster give scholarship to their county players and contribute to the majority of Munster based Fitzgibbon teams. Makes it hard for leinster players and when managers are from Munster makes it harder.

Gerathys didn't play with Offaly for last 2 years. They left during Brian Whelans term for how they where treated. I personally think they are good enough and will make the team this year.

Now let's discuss your nosense statement.. please explain how all UL forwards started on their county team? Never seen mike Mullins starting for Galway this year..

No greenairfield you are wrong.. it's your opinion that gerathys are not good enough, maybe if they from burr they would be.. my point is that they wernt even givin a chance..
