Killeighman, is it pronounced
A) Clo-dee-a
Or
B) Clo-die-a
Gaels?

I pronounce it as the former, whereas LS pronounces it as the latter.

The river Clodiagh flows through the club's catchment area. I prefer Clo-Di-agh Gaels, others differ.

Back up and live, my apologies for the haitus!

And Brian has agreed to be a regular contributor from now on, so that should provide a bit more balance to things, other than just my witterings!

Gavin is like the young lad that can't wait to run in and tell the teacher what just went on in the school yard and who was involved.
Can anyone tell us how spilling all this to the whole world immediately after the match was to the good of Offaly football?
Is it any wonder the county board had to impose restrictions on the media at meetings? How can things get sorted, discussed, thrashed out etc. in house with fellas desperate to get stories out there ASAP. We'll it's in all the papers today so we can only assume he achieved his goal. It's made Offaly even more toxic and unappealing than before and likely to put off potential future local candidates for the job never mind any external interest. Mind boggling.

Turns out it’s a 12 week ban now. I never heard that.

6 or 7 players won’t play again for Wallace says Gavin. News broke this evening to RTÉ.

In a world where social media didn't exist, this would be a fair point. However as we all know, if Brian Gavin said nothing, people would be well aware that the whole system would be falling apart all over the place. The pictures of Stephen Wallace openly flaunting the ban with his earpiece, the visible disgust of Dunne and Pender as they were being taken off, the comments by former players, the liking of those comments by current players - it's plain to see to anyone who wants to know about it what's going on. And frankly, there have been several instances of scandals in Offaly GAA where Offaly people, either players, managers or volunteers have been seen as the scapegoats. In this instance, I actually don't feel the players are at fault, at least not for the main part, and it's not doing Offaly GAA any harm to get that message out there.

If anything, the county board imposing restrictions on local media is counterproductive. You can disagree with people like Brian Lowry, Will O'Callaghan, Kevin Corrigan, Joe Troy, Brian Gavin and myself all you like, but every one of us are Offaly natives who want to see Offaly GAA do well. National journalists have no such affinity and they're going to be the ones that are far more likely to sensationalise any stories that are out there. God knows I've tried to quell enough stories that have made Offaly look bad, only to get grief when an external source scoops me instead.

There seems to be one only man sensationally spreading the rumours and appears happy to do it nationally and he's no national journalist. He has used Radio 3, RTE Sport, We are Offaly podcast, Irish Examiner and Off The Ball as platforms to spread these stories to ensure maximum exposure. I don't mind him commenting on the game itself and the shambles that was but can anyone explain how spreading all the off the pitch rumours are for the good of Offaly football? If he hadn't made it his business to go nationally with all this there wouldn't 10% of the media coverage........yeah one or two tweets might have been picked up but the current shit storm wouldn't be happening. He put out the rumour about Nigel Dunne heading for his car at half time. Nigel has had to come out today and refute that claim, something he shouldn't have had to do, will Brian applogise to him for putting this out there?

He also told Radio 3 that James Lawler was told "40 minutes" before throw in that he wouldn't start. He then told RTE Sport that Lawler was told "an hour and a half, two hours before hand". So which was it? Then he claimed on Off The Ball that management told Lawler that they "forgot" to inform him he wasn't starting after all. Late changes happen on teams for various reasons, why the big deal about this and why the changing of the story?

Why did Brian Gavin take it upon himself to declare the management team practically gone after the game and began naming potential successors? Who made him the spokesman for either the players, management or county board on this issue? How does doing this before any investigation or cooling off period on all sides has taken place help Offaly football.

There was no need on Off the Ball to bring up stories about people I know who were speaking to Kerry people.........who said this and that about Stephen Wallace. Again how is this helpful? In fact he couldn't tell enough rumours and stories about management on Off the Ball.

I assume all of this has made the county boards job of holding this together practically impossible. This isn't good enough behaviour from the chairman of a GAA club within the county to be actively spreading these rumours, stories, half truths call them what you want to every news outlet in the country looking for a few quick headlines. Perhaps he could explain his reasoning at the next CB meeting?

It's all very frustrating because none of this helps our players who are caught in the middle of all this.

I am with you all the way on this bracknaghboy. It is incredible that a player has to come out to refute a story spread in the media by a member of the County Board. There was no need for this individual to go running to every media outlet he could to spread rumours and half truths. What was gained by it?
The situation would have had to be dealt with anyway. It didn't need a media furore, instigated by one person, to bring things to a head.
Did I hear that Gavin is going to be a regular contributor on We are Offaly? If so, I hope he will act with a bit more restraint and tact than he has shown in the past few days.
