Saddened to hear that Paddy, who was Captain of the 1947 Offaly Minor football team that won our first Leinster Minor, has passed away.

Condolences to all his family in Limerick , where he lived for around 60 years, in Doon, Ferbane, Clara & Cloghan and further afield.

His nephew Martin also gave some service to Offaly...

very sad news.
Condolences to his family.
I have to admit that I never knew that Offaly won the 47 minor.

Ar dheis De go raibh a anam.

Does anyone know the names of the Offaly team that won the 1947 Leinster Minor title? I have heard of individual players on it such as Sean Foran, Mick Furlong, Paddy Casey and Kevin Scally but have never seen the full lineout.

How many of the team are still alive today ?. Is Rory O'Brien Fr. Rory O'Brien who hurled with Ballinamere, and recently returned home from mission duty in Cameroon?, and is Vin Cowen related to former Taoiseach Brian Cowen?
Well done POTH

I'm pretty sure Artie Pyke also passed away recently. Given his contribution to local GAA, he too should be remembered.

I found this tribute to Artie Pyke on the Southern Gaels hurling club notes. Artie passed away on 24th August last. RIP.
Appreciation for Artie Pyke.
It was with great sadness that we heard last week of the passing of Artie Pyke. Artie was synonymous with Southern Gaels since the club's foundation in 1973 and before that with the Athlone Hurling Club. He won a Leinster Minor Football title with Offaly in 1947 and went on to represent Offaly in hurling and football at senior level. Having won an array of titles with his home club Tullamore Artie came to live in Athlone in 1963. He married Maisie Feeney and they had a family of eight children.
Artie captained Athlone to the Westmeath Junior title in 1963 and won a Leinster Hurling championship with Westmeath in the same year.
On the setting up of Southern Gaels Hurling Club in 1973 Artie was one of the most influential members. He was instrumental in starting the Street Leagues for juveniles and was consistently a mentor with an array of club teams including serving as selector with the 1986 Intermediate winning side. Artie served as Chairman for six years and was President for the last nineteen years. He also worked tirelessly with Westmeath as an administrator and a selector. Over the years he was a selector with Under 14, 16 and 21 teams that won' B' All-Irelands.
Artie was a true gentleman will be a big loss to our club but a bigger loss to Maisie and their family. We offer them our deepest condolences and sympathies, may he rest in peace.

Paddy Geraghty[Durrow] should read Ballycumber. Paddy was born in the Station House , Ballycumber and spent all his working life associated with Railways. He was Station Master in Moate until the Station closed and afterwards was Station Master in Athlone before retiring to the Station House in Ballycumber. He sadly passed away a few years ago appropriately on a train. Paddy was a great supporter of Community Games.

Well done on finding the tribute to Artie.

To clarify: I did not know Artie but wrote the post on Paddy as he was a (second) cousin of my late Dad,,,,,,,,

I remember Paddy G playing for Ballycumber and of course in Ballycumber Station as we headed by train for Portlaoise for an Offaly game around 62, 63...

I believe Vincent Cowan, later Father Cowan, was an uncle of the former Taoiseach..............

The book The Furlongs by Pat Nolan has a few pages on the 1947 team on which Mickey Furlong featured. Offaly beat Carlow by 14 points and Kildare by 23 points to reach a first ever Leinster final. They met a Dublin team whose star player was Kevin Heffernan. Offaly were three points behind with time almost up when they won a fifty. The ball was going wide when Rory O'Brien, who had been moved up to corner forward, fisted it back into play for sub Tommy Ennis to finish it to the net.

Offaly went on to win the replay in Mullingar by two points. They met Tyrone in the All-Ireland semi final in Drogheda. They were four points down in the closing minutes but won a penalty which Johnny Kinahan converted. Tommy Moyna then levelled it but Tyrone got a last-minute fifty which went all the way to the net. Tyrone beat Mayo well in the final. A heartbreaking defeat but a landmark achievement for Offaly football to win a Leinster title that year

Rory O'Brien joined the priesthood and spent decades on missionary work in Africa. Two of that team were not native to Offaly. At that time young men often had to move around at an early age looking for work. Tommy Moyna was from Scotstown in Monaghan and had played senior for Monaghan before moving to Offaly to work for DE Williams. Des Garland had played minor for Westmeath the previous year but moved to Tullamore where he spent the rest of his life.

According to the same book Sean Foran from Edenderry played at full forward in the drawn Leinster final but perhaps didn't feature in the replay as he was not included in the list that POTH posted. I have not been able to find any place called Ballyglass in county Offaly. Perhaps it is a placename that has gone out of use. Does anyone from the Daingean area know?

Yes Vincent Cowen is a brother of Ber Cowen RIP and uncle of Christy, Brian and Barry.
He attended the College in Roscrea and won a historic Leinster colleges hurling medal with them in 47 along with his historic minor football medal with the 1947 Offaly minors. He subsequently joined the monks at Mount St Joseph Roscrea as Fr Andrew Cowen OCSO. He was Gamesmaster and later Career Guidance teacher in the College there for many years and died in 2008.

Paddy Fenlon and Paddy Hanamy also won two Leinster medals that year as Paddy Hanamy captained St Mels College Longford to win the cup in the Leinster colleges final of 1946/47 and Paddy Fenlon also lined out with him on that team. JH
