They often play it long into forwards but it is far from hit and hope. Generally played to grass or air in favour of forward who can win ball. Unlike how Cork in mid naughties and Clare / Waterford more recently who often play a type of running game, Galway play way more direct with supply coming from full and half back line but strategically placed ball. Something similar to Kilkenny in their pomp 5 years ago. Mannion always wins own ball and then has options to throw off or go himself. Flynn, Mannion, Glynn, Canning Donellan are all big men who can win their own ball but can also score and are very skillful.

As Pat Spillane says, when an artic truck meets a morris minor there can only be one winner - assume the artic truck has an appropriate skill set of course! Remember Kilkenny with Shefflin, Eoin Larkin, Eddie Brennan, John Hoyne, Richie Power, TJ Reid, Walter Walsh, Martin Comerford all win or were able to win their own ball and can / could hurl. So can Richie Hogan and he is only a small enough lad. That is the key to Cody's success! They can lump it forward when under pressure and have at least a 50/50 chance of winning the ball! Might have adjusted a little more towards the Clare / Waterford style more in last few years by adding more mobility with likes of Fennellys and Rice but not by a whole lot!
Watch what happens the Galway skill level when they come under pressure v Tipp or Kilkenny.

In the Leinster final they had chances but weren't able to execute the skills needed due to the severe pressure applied by Kilkenny players.

The same will happen v Tipp because the Galway players just aren't good enough, and they still haven't got a natural hurler for centre back.
What do ye make of Galways "meek" performance now lads? Thought they totally outplayed Tipperary yesterday and should have won by more. It really opens up to me about how far we are underachieving in Offaly at moment. If our lads were fit, well coached and drilled we'd be fairly competitive and capable of getting to a quarter final! Forwards like Bergin, Dooley, Currams have been under-performing but with likes of Conor Mahon, Derek Molloy, Emmet Nolan Colin Egan, Brian Carroll and Cathal Parlon also having been available, we should be way better than we have been. Gross under achievement due mainly to mismanagement. Imagine if all these were fully engaged and fit and hungry to play. Only Carroll is over 30 so age has not been a factor but unfortunately it will be in a year or two and what is coming behind them has been mismanaged at underage!

The intensity and physicality that Galway brought was serious: don't think I've ever seen as many Tipp lads sat back on their arses time and again- with one obvious, but critical, exception.
Deep down, did Tipp think that Galway had played their All Ireland performance v Cork, and given Galway's Jekyll and Hyde nature, that they would crumble yesterday?

Galway have created a massive amount of scoring chances for two games now, based on dominating the middle third. Can't see them enjoying that level of dominance in the final- and their conversion rate will need to be far, far better. Callanan very nearly carried Tipp through single handedly- literally. Maybe Kilkenny don't have one forward capable of scoring that amount- but they sure as hell won't be relying on one forward to perform. Could be that Walter Walsh could be the big man on the edge of the square that could cause panic stations. Galway looked driven and focused yesterday- if they replicate that intensity, and keep their demons buried, then they might- just might, topple Cody's Goliath, but I wouldn't be putting too much on it.
Measuring Offaly against these teams is a bit dangerous, I think. Yes, we all know Offaly are a long way off that level, but using Galway or Kilkenny as a yardstick is aiming too high and offers little encouragement in the short term. Some of the ingredients of these teams can be put in the mix though for Offaly to make progress- a settled panel, stable management, better underage development. Currently, one of three can realistically think of winning a Leinster title: Kilkenny, Galway, and possibly Dublin. Offaly are back among the rest- the aim should be, within the next 3-5 years, to look at getting to a Leinster final. For all their minor success, at any given time Galway can only carry a senior panel of 30-odd players, and only 15 can appear on a field at one time.
At least that's not an issue for Offaly- Offaly needs to look at ways of maximising the resources that are there, and it's up to the clubs to coach the players properly, the schools to build on that, the development squads to build on that, and then the minor and 21's to develop county seniors.
For the time being, Offaly is where it is. The choices are to wallow in self-pity and blame all and sundry from the County Board, Birr, Tullamore, K/K, development squads and add whatever I've missed out on, or look at where we want to see Offaly hurling in 3 or 5 or 7 or 10 years time, and look at what can be done.
Your club's current U12s will be 21/22 in 10 years time.
Are they getting the preparation to become Offaly senior hurlers?

Joe Dooley, Ollie Baker, and Brian Whelehan all had one thing in common when it came to intercounty management, They had no experince of training teams at that level, so to even consider Danny Owens would be complete madness. Look at what happpened to Padjoe Whelehan when he threw his hand at managing a county team. Owens isnt up to that level we need someone who has been there and done it at that level.

That's great good man , and who do you propose gets it? Or wants it for that matter , Quaid trained a ladies team so he is not up to your standards so either. Any other top manager is as we always here in Offaly to expensive and we don't have the money , Owens is interested and has won Leinsters and all Ireland as a player and is a proven club manager .

Has Ken hogan declared an interest ? Or Forde ? Can you show where they said their interested? Brian Cody was an all Ireland winning captain , Liam Sheedy played with Tipp , Cregan played for Limerick , Cunningham played for Galway , Ger loughnane played with Clare , will I go on????? All have done well as managers of course it helps that they played the game. Not every player becomes a good manager , Sid was a great player but had a terrible club manager record and got the Offaly job so no wonder he failed!! He didn't want the job either don't forget!!!!

With Liam Sheedy being appointed in order to help seek out a candidate for Offaly SH mgr, I hope that the first we see is when the candidate has been put forward for ratification before the CB. Not with the merits of the various candidates being thrashed out here.
That would be the right way to conduct business

Seems like a good appointment, well done to Sheedy and the committe on two counts:

1 - finding a manager with inter county experience.
2 - having him in place before senior q/f, intermed and junior finals.

Can't be upset with this appointment.
Let hope it was done the right way now and that everybody interested in the job was given a chance to make a case for getting the job.

Kelly an interesting one and a person Liam Sheedy would know well. he was involved with Tipp underage team around the time Sheedy was manager.
I haven't watch a lot of Kerry over the last few years but from what i've seen they did play to there strength.

The worrying thing now is that Kelly won't know a huge amount about Offaly hurling and if the normal thing is done in Offaly is someone within the county board will help him pick his panel for the 1st year and that normally not good.
The county Board need to be make sure that all matches for the rest of the championship split into time where he can get to see each team play at least once.

now the important thing is to get the correct team around him. Brian Horgan will come with him.

Good to see a manager in place before the hurling championships conclude. It seems like a good appointment, well done to CB.
