Angry Wexford boss Liam Dunne bites back at Michael Duignan and Ger Loughnane

Wexford boss Liam Dunne has taken aim at pundits Michael Duignan and Ger Loughnane for remarks they made about his team two years ago.

In an extensive interview in tomorrow’s Irish Examiner 2015 Championship supplement, Dunne slams Duignan for claiming Wexford had frightened Dublin with rough play in the 2013 Leinster quarter-final replay.

He also lambastes Loughnane who said the counties were guilty of “constipated hurling” in the drawn game.

“I thought we got a lot of unfair criticism two years ago. Andrew Shore was sent off in Parnell Park. Clare had three men sent off against us last year in two games. These things are going to happen. It’s very easy to get on a bandwagon.

"Michael Duignan stuck the knife into us big time. He was always going to protect Brian Gavin, they’re very good friends so he was always going to look after his buddy as best he could. On national television and in the papers, he did a very good job. A year later he’s down with us in Wexford drinking pints celebrating after us beating Clare. You know which... up yours, Michael!

“The other man (Loughnane)? He had Galway playing some fair constipated hurling for a long time and knocked them back 10 years. When these fellas are on a bandwagon and talking we know what we have to do.”

Dunne also claims The Sunday Game has a major influence on how referees officiate games by the nature of how they portray certain teams.

“A few weeks ago on League Sunday, Tomás Ó Sé was on it and they picked two or three off-the-ball incidents in one game and then we came to the Kerry (v Tyrone) game and there were a desperate blatant thing done but it was never even mentioned. I waited to see how Tomás would react to this one but Michael Lyster never even brought it up.

“You saw Jamie O’Sullivan highlighted for elbowing Diarmuid Connolly (in the Division 1 football final). I can’t actually see him hitting him in the jaw. If it was me, I would be going to my barrister to show that I didn’t actually hit him. I think that’s after creeping into The Sunday Game and League Sunday big time. The likes of Eddie Brennan and Brendan Cummins highlight these things but they’ve been around long enough to know...”

Dunne is an angry blinkered man. The replayed Dublin match in Parnell Park was the single-most deliberately dirty effort by a county team that I have ever seen. I was at the game. Many of the Wexford players seemed to be extraordinarily hyper, almost frenzied. There was a constant flow of wild pulling and there were at least 4 incidences of extreme violence that everyone in the park recognised as almost unbelievably reckless. In one of them the Wexford player took a wild 360 degree swipe in the middle of a ruck and struck his own player on the head. In two others, Dublin players were struck on the head and the helmets saved them. And in the last case, if the Dublin player did not duck it could have killed him - and I don't use language loosely.

I also was in Parnell Park for that game and I left it feeling sick at what I witnessed. There was so much going on off the ball that you could be looking anywhere on the field and seeing trouble. Duignan gave Wexford the works alright but in fairness he also called out Dublins Conor McCormack who was equally culpable when the viciousness was going on but it is easy to say it was an anti-Wexford rant if it suits Dunnes view of things

I admired Dunne as a player that could really hurl when he wanted but I'd have zero time for him as a manager. Comparing the thuggery that Wexford put on in that Dublin game to the three reds Clare players received v Wexford is embarrassingly stupid. Two were extremely foolish incidents of frustration (Podge and Bugler) and another was persistent fouling, none of them a threat to a Wexford players safety. How he can compare them to a Wexford player actually pulling head height in the wrong direction and connecting with a Dublin players head is mind boggling.

Seems like we're stuck in a time warp here.

The other day the 'news' was that offaly football isn't what it was in the 70s and 80s.

Today Dunne is complaining about the fact that someone observed and commented on repeated improper use of the hurl in a match 2 years ago?

Tomorrow David Forde to pipe up to say he didn't tap Duignan that hard in the head to warrant an attempt to remove his spleen back in 98???

Jeez!!

At least Dunne has moved on from complaining about John Troy.

Sad sign when ye have to slate another county Manager be more in your line to worry about your own county.
Everyone on here knows that Duignan was not goin to let gavin down no matter what went on in the match
drinking buddies shr. Wexford moving on in the right direction, so what if the manager wants to use the media to
motivate his players. Its better than not saying anything and going nowhere fast about time Whelahan started doing
the same to get a bit of lost passion back into Offaly Hurling.

I can only speak for myself, but it took me about 30 seconds to fire up the article. I can't see that being detrimental any worrying quotas that I need to be hitting for all things Offaly.

Maybe it works for Dunne and Wexford, but he seems happy to portray himself as a bitter character with not much between the ears.

I had a good read of the article and its straight out of the Jose Mourinho school of management.

There all against us.
We been treated unfairly.
The Ref are been influenced by the pundits.
The bad thing we do are highlight more than the bad thing done to us.

It's carbon copy of Mourinho and how he influence Ref and TV pundits.

Mourinho is often call Maureen, Whinger and worst by other team and there supporters.
the Points is he get results.

Don't get me wrong i f**king hate that management style but if Wexford get to a lenister final or an Ireland Semi-final They be no Wexford people complaining about the management trying to influence ref and tv pundits.

This isn't Dunne having a go at Duignan. It's an calculated attempt to influence Ref and TV pundits(partical Duigan and Loughnane) to show and see the only the good thing Wexford do and gloss over the mean stuff.
If it work it's great management but that a BIG IF!

I expect Wexford to flop this year.

Think about it. They did their best to throw away both matches against Clare last year - the first when they had a big lead and lost it, the second when playing at home (and those of us of a certain age know how passionate Wexford supporters are). And Clare were not firing well at all.

They'll likely face Westmeath in the first round, then Kilkenny. They've quite a bit to make up on Kilkenny, and I can't see them beating any of the five Munster teams in a qualifier. Wexford have some fine hurlers, Chin, McDonald, Guiney, McGovern too, but Rossiter is a huge loss, Redmond can be hot or cold and goalkeeper is uncertain.

the timing of dunnes angry comments is surprising, perhaps he thinks viewers have forgotten that shameful display by wexford at parnell park, unbecoming of the county.

unlike offaly and laois players of his era, who may have been hard but fair, dunne was recognised as a very sneaky defender(ask gary kirby and others), he played the game on a nasty edge. it seems that characters like him and perhaps davy fitz are willing to try and pull any stunt to gain an advantage or spin the "they are all out to get us" mentality into his squad.

compare and contrast 2 gentlemen hurlers like JB Murphy and B Whelehan to that pair and you get chalk and cheese. JBM and BW may not get the desired results, yet they will not shame their respective counties in their actions.

we should expect standards in the gaa, and if the dunnes/fitz of the game threaten to lower same, they should be punished.

Dunne gave plenty of it to John Troy and others when he played. 3 sendings off in a row in the championship in an era where referees still turned a blind eye to a lot of stuff says it all !

The fella who carried the interview certainly didn't do any clean up on the text.
'I suppose' is there 12 times and 'look it' 6 times.
If half way through, Duignan had called over to the tea lady to put milk and 2 sugars in his cup, yer man would have included it in the transcript.
