NFL Offaly V Wicklow 1/3/15

Post by hopper82 »

Next stop is Aughrim for the Offaly footballers . After last summers performance down there I would hope some of our players are still hurting from that performance and we can grind out another result .

Wicklow haven't been going wonderfully well under new manager Johnny Magee , they lost to Waterford in round one and beat Leitrim by the narrowest of margins in aughrim before the two week break , they are also without the services of Leighton Glynn which is a catastrophic blow for the garden county.

Offaly have a number of players involved with the U21s who play Kildare next Wednesday night but I would still expect these players to play Sunday as they have all been doing really well , hopefully they come through okay unharmed .

I don't think it will be easy but we are meeting Wicklow at a good time we have a small bit of momentum hopefully we have enough to pull through.

Just wondering has anyone any update on Ruari allens status , is he defiantly heading off in the summer ?

Crucial game today...a win would see us back top of the table and with Leitrim, Carlow & Antrim all to come to Tullamore we would be giving ourselves every opportunity to make a league final & get promotion!! I think it'll be very tough in Aughrim today...we have an awful record over there, but today will be about getting a win, however we manage that...hope the lads have used their 2 weeks off to good effect and are ready to hit the ground running today.

Wishing the offaly lads the best of luck today, do yourselves and the county proud.

Grounded with a dose today but this has made my day Wicklow 2-6 Offaly 2-18

Absolutely brilliant, especially when remembering the hiding we got there last summer....

Mulhall keeps Faithful in front with win over Wicklow
Offaly 2-18 Wicklow 2-6 - Allianz NFL Division 4

Offaly cemented their place at the top of Division 4 when they picked up their third win of the campaign in Aughrim in an impressive showing from the Faithful men.
Watch Full Episodes

Trailing 2-0 to 0-2 after ten minutes, Pat Flanagan's side were rattled, but they regrouped brilliantly and with some exceptional shooting they were 1-12 to 2-2 ahead by the break.

Offaly played very deep in the opening 15-odd minutes and they were finding it very hard to break down a stern Wicklow defence, but once Offaly found their groove there was no denying the outcome.

Bernard Allen, with a man-of-the-match performance along with Willie Mulhall and Niall McNamee, caused all sorts of problems for Wicklow and once Mulhall hit his first of two goals, the writing really was on the wall for the home side. Mulhall was on target again in the 63rd minute when a scramble saw the Walsh Island club man effectively end the game as a contest.

Man of the match: Bernard Allen (Offaly).

Scorers: Offaly: W Mulhall 2-4 (2fs), N McNamee 0-5, B Allen 0-4, C Donohue, N Darby, N Dunne (f) B Darby, J Moloney 0-1 each. Wicklow: C McGraynor 2-3 (2fs), S Furlong, M Kenny, B McCrea 0-1 each.

Offaly: A Mulhall 8; D Brady 8, P McConway 6, J O'Connor 7; C Donohue 7, J Moloney 7, N Darby 7; G Guilfoyle 8, N Smith 8; P Sullivan 7, N McNamee 8, N Bracken 7; B Allen 9, N Dunne 7, W Mulhall 9. Subs: B Darby 7 for C Donohue (51), K Mullally 6 for P Sullivan (57), A Sullivan 6 for N Dunne (57), N Geraghty 5 for G Guilfoyle (65), B Crombie 5 for N Darby (69), Mark Young 5 for W Mulhall (69).

Wicklow: R Lambert 6; P Higgins 6, M McLoughlin 6, A Byrne 6; D Healy 7, A Murphy 5, P McWalter 8; A McLoughlin 5, R O'Brien 5; D Hayden 7, J McGrath 6, D Woods 6; B McCrea 7, S Furlong 7, C McGraynor 7. Subs: M Kenny 5 for J McGrath (BC, 21), N Gaffney 6 for D Woods (h-t), P Cronin 5 for R O'Brien (48), M Mangan 5 for P McWalter (51), T Kelly for D Hayden (62), C Foley for B McCrea (65).

Referee: D Maher (Westmeath).

Offaly gain confidence boost with victory over Wicklow

Sun, Mar 1, 2015, 19:38

Offaly 2-18 Wicklow 2-6

Pat Flanagan brought his all conquering Offaly team to Aughrim only too well aware of the reputation that venue has for bringing down front runners. Apart from the opening 10 to 15 minutes, the Offaly manager got very little to worry about in this match.

Wicklow did get off to a good start when DCU hero Conor McGraynor boxed home a John McGrath centre for the first goal of the match and then repeated it again in the 11th minute when Brendan McCrea and Seanie Furlong did the spade work.

Corner forward William Mulhall was picking off great points for Offaly and by the 23rd minute the sides were level. A Mulhall goal in the 21st minute sent Offaly in leading by 1-12 to 2-2 at half time.

Johnny McGee did try to rejig his Wicklow side, bringing on a few subs but it had little or no effect. Mulhall completed a man of the match performance with Offaly’s second goal in the 60th minute. A comprehensive win and a further boost to the risingconfidence of the Faithful County.

OFFALY: A Mulhall, D Brady, P McConway, J O’Connor, C Donohue (0-2), J. Maloney, N Darby (0-1), GGuilfoyle, N Smith, P Sullivan, N McNamee (0-2), N Bracken, B Allen (0-4, 0-1 free), N Dunne, W Mulhall (2-8, two frees). Subs: K Mullally for Sullivan (both 45 mins), B Darby (0-1) for Donoghue (45 mins), S Sullivan for Dunne (47 mins).
WICKLOW: R Lambert, P Higgins, M McLoughlin, A Byrne, D Healy, A. Murphy, P McWalter, A McLoughlin, R O’Brien, D. Hayden, J McGrath, D Woods (0-1), B McCrea (0-1), S Furlong , C McGraynor (2-3, 0-2 frees). Subs: M Kenny (0-1)for McGrath (20 mins), P Cronin for O’Brien (44 mins ), M Mangan for McWalter (45 mins), N Gaffney for Woods (h-t), T Kelly for Healy (58 mins), C Foley for McCrea (60 mins).
Referee: D. Maher (Westmeath)

Great win. It certainly seems as if momentum is beginning to be generated. Pat Flanagan has always performed fairly well in the League, so I'm delighted this is continuing. It's more important for this team to get back up around Division 2 than to get a few good performances in the Championship in the next couple of years. Get up to 2, start playing at a higher level and get comfortable there, and you can start thinking about moving on to the next level. Good to have a bit of optimism back.

Good result in Aughrim yesterday, just curious as to how Wicklow scored 2 goals in the opening 10 minutes, did it take Offaly a while to settle down?. They did the job afterwards and pulled off a good win. I see from the league tables in today's Independent, Longford and Carlow are tops on 4 points from 3 games, with Offaly also on 4 pts from 2 games. The correct position is Offaly lead on 6 points from 3 games, with Longford and Carlow both on 5 points after 3 games. Offaly , Wicklow, Antrim, and Leitrim are down as playing 2 games each, the other teams are on 3 games.
I presume this is a mistake, but surely it doesn't take a genius to get the tables correct, The Division 1 and 2 tables are correct.
Finally! Next Sunday Offaly footballers play Leitrim at 2pm? Offaly hurlers are also at home to Waterford, it appears this game is fixed for Saturday next, I understood next Sunday is a double header, can someone confirm?
