Boundary Rule: Birr taking it too far

With less that two weeks to go to the u16 B County Final between CRC and Lusmagh, the Birr club have lodged an appeal to stop a young CRC hurler from playing due to the 'boundary rule'. This young lad has been hurling with CRC for the last 8 or 9 years and Birr have moved to prevent this kid from playing in a county final. As everyone in here knows, Birr and CRC have had their rows over this boundary rule in the past. To deny a young lad a chance to play in a county final out of nothing other than a need to get back at CRC is sickening. Seeing young lads enjoy their hurling is clearly lost on these people and show that there are some very bitter people involved in hurling in Birr.

Your references to his being a sub most of the time bears no relevance to the issue as for reopening the can of worms crinkle still had the lid off it from their last debacle over young Birr lad and by the way that happened to be a county final and was never actually played after an objection.Its very unfair to condemn a particular club when the actions of the other are being mirrored.

Speaking generally, without any knowledge of the specifics of this case, the boundary between clubs has to be sacrosanct and of all the clubs in Offaly, Birr and Crinkill should be more aware of this than most.

It may be the case that there is some dispute over the actual address of the player in question but if not, this really should be cut and dried and he should be playing for the correct club according to his home address. It's obviously regrettable that it hasn't come up before now and that it's gone the whole way to under-16, however you can't create a situation where incorrectly lining out for one club for a period of time becomes an argument in favour of staying with that club - that only encourages clubs to try and entice lads across the boundary and to deliberately line out with illegal players in an attempt to claim a peculiar GAA version of "squatters rights".

Equally the ability of the player in question is of no relevance whatsoever.

On a purely practical level, it's undoubtedly somewhat regrettable that Birr perhaps didn't just say nothing until after the county final and then look for him to be correctly registered as a Birr player for 2015, however once the issue has been raised, that horse has bolted the stable and now the only issue is what's the right solution by rule.


A second case in the space of a year would also possibly be an argument for a full audit of all underage players in both clubs over the coming winter, to ensure that there are no more of these issues waiting to explode.

Glad to see you realised the error in your text and have revised the section which contained the reference about the lad being a sub more often than not.Maybe it would be an idea to delete the whole text as it was all in bad taste. If people in Birr are considered bitter and spiteful for their actions are the people in Crinkle who carried out the same actions in 2012 willing to agree that they too are bitter and spiteful.This is not a CRC issue it is a Birr Crinkle one
