The offaly county players are right in what they are saying by people throwing digs at people from behind screens on this. I know where im not wanted and i wont be back for a while
Killeighman, don't give up posting us long ridge people must stick together. POTHi'm sure, regrets that comment.
Well done to all today, it looked bad when Antrim goaled to lead by 5, but we hung in and got the result. Well done to management and players.
I had to listen to Mid 103's patchy match commentary, including a loss of commentary in the second half.
RTE were no better, Jacqui Hurley got the final score wrong, and i'm still waiting on a match report. All about Down hammering Leitrim, plus the Leinster SFC semi finals. Then we're only Offaly and Antrim, not part of the 'elite'.

Delighted with the win and the manner it was rescued is something that will give the players a bit of confidence.
We haven't pulled a game like that out of the fire in years and this has damaged self belief.

A comeback win!

Great stuff.

Let's give it both barrels in the next round.

BTW Did Kenny redirect the second goal in or did it go straight in from Carroll's free? Seems the papers are disagreeing(?)

Congrats to all involved on the win.

A great victory for a team under big pressure, does anyone know when the draw is on for the next round, with the players back and a couple of weeks strong training things look a lot better.

Is it not an open draw with the other 3 qualifier winners (Waterford, tipp/galway, Clare/wex) then the winners of both them matches play the provincial losers in the All Ireland Q/finals??

Absolutely delighted. Delighted for the players and management who have been under savage pressure. Great fighting spirit to dig out the win in those circumstances and also being behind so close to the end. Looking forward to a report from anyone that made the long trip as I only caught the Sunday game "highlights" with probably the worst camera angle I have ever seen. Also on the Sunday game, while discussing the Kilkenny/Galway game Tomas Mulcahy made reference to Croke parks wider spaces in relation to OCP. This bugs me no end as Croke Park is no bigger and rubbish like the "wide spaces of Croke Park" just gets thrown out there by pundits in analyzing games.

Agree Bula bula...... as far as i am aware, Tullamore is the max width a pitch can be......similar to croker......unsure about length but wouldnt be far off and it is the width that creates the space anyway......Lazy journalism

Glad the lads won but in one way, it mightnt be a great thing for Offaly hurling as a half decent performance the next day and gallant loss will paper over all the cracks this year has shown up to date.....Though it may seem ridiculous to some, Offaly in my opinion would have been better served by losing the game.

Had it happened, the county board would be forced to do a root and branch analysis as to how far we have fallen..... Unfortunately, there is a strong likelihood that we will lose to a stronger county now as expected and acceptance that we are slightly off a galway, tipp or Clare shows us nothing or gives us no direction or shock the county board need to wake them up to their shortcomings and gross mismanagement generally (there are always exceptions) of underage hurling development squads. The mediocrity will be given a lifeline to grow and prosper, that wouldnt have happened if we lost......

Here is hoping that after any annual review, the real shortcomings will be looked on and the year is taken at face value....ie a relegation playoff with Kerry, a loss to Antrim & Laoise in league, never mind the others and an absolute embarassment v kilkenny in senior and Wexford in U21....... Only if such a review is done and more importantly addressed with a coherent plan, will we be in any way in a better place in a few years as our underage teams suffer loss after loss against emerging hurling counties such as laoise, carlow and westmeath.......

Firstly, on David Kenny. Posssibly the reason he played in the forward line was he would not have the legs to chase an attacker around after the amount of training injury has robbed him of? On the surface of it, good move and fair play to Brian for shaking it up.
Also, same failings , from the Sunday Game it looked like the wrong man in the right place with Conor Mahon missing 2 great goal chances. Also looked like the last free that led to the goal was dubious enough.
Anyhow, well done to the lads on getting the win, as we all say a win is a win. Hope that the boost in confidence is a help to the lads and they get a bit of freedom and enjoyment out of the next 2 weeks training.

But I dont think anyone is naive enough to know that change needs to happen in Offaly hurling over the next few years.
No matter what happens in the next round a review and plan needs to happen, and thats fact.

CP 144x86 taken from Croke park website.
OCP 145x90 - Wikipedia. Haven't found it anywhere else.

On the losing of the game, I see your point but that win was badly needed by all and I can't see how anyone would be naive enough to take it that all is well because of the win.

Great credit has to go to the players for digging deep and pulling off the win. It showed great character.

Some players might have under performed and plenty of mistakes were made but they kept plugging away, never dropped the heads and deservedly got the win. The fact that the Antrim keeper was man of the match and how their manager spoke of him saving 5 or 6 clear goals says its bit too. When things like that are going against a team and your losing with the clock winding down, the easy option would have been to drop the heads.

Loughnane and Co have been happy to lay the boot into these players. Teddy McCarthy more less said they hadnt a hope up in Ballycastle. Well fair play to the lads in proving alot of outsiders wrong and proving that there is some fight and pride in this county.

Plenty of hard work needs to be done. Some lads have to get fitter and improve their aerobic fitness. Plenty of hard, physical, fast hurling practice needs to be done in training. But we can take positives from the win and I know the players will do all they can to be ready for the next day.

Offaly shock Antrim with last-gasp winner

Sunday, June 29, 2014 - 04:21 PM

Offaly 2-19 Antrim 1-20

A 71st minute goal saw Offaly rob victory at the death with a two-point win over Antrim in the All-Ireland SHC qualifiers at Ballycastle this afternoon.

Antrim led by five points with nine minutes remaining following a PJ O’Connell scored, but Kevin Ryan’s side weren’t to score again as Offaly dug deep to claim victory.

In an entertaining encounter the sides were level on five occasions in the opening half, including after 23 minutes.

However, Antrim stole a march before half-time with scores from O’Connell, Michael Bradley, Neal McAuley and Paul Shiels helping them to a 0-13 to 0-10 interval lead.

Antrim moved four points clear on the restart, but a 41st minute David Kenny goal put Offaly on the front foot.

The hosts responded with four points in a row, and with Chrissy O’Connell inspirational between the posts as he saved eight clear-cut goal chances over the 70 minutes, the Saffrons moved 0-19 to 1-13 in front.

A PJ O’Connell goal in the 58th minute handed Antrim a 1-19 to 1-14 lead, but Offaly never gave up as the visitors finished strongly with a Sean Cleary point sealing victory at the death.

With the sides already having met on three occasions this year, the scene was set for a keenly contested encounter.

Antrim and Offaly had suffered heavy Leinster SHC defeats against Wexford and Kilkenny respectively, and both were eager to get their Summer back on track.

The sun shone brightly throughout at the picturesque North Antrim venue, and the Saffrons were the quickest out of the blocks.

Shiels fired the first of his six first half points after just 80 seconds and this was quickly followed with a Jackson McGreevy point from play to see the hosts off to a positive start.

Offaly showed great determination throughout this contest and this was evident in the opening stages, with two Bergin scores levelling the tie after eight minutes.

This was the first of eight occasions the teams would be tied in this game, including seven times in the opening half, with both teams hitting patches of dominance.

Scores from Conor Mahon, Bergin and Dooley saw Offaly moved 0-5 to 0-4 ahead after 15 minutes, but Shiels fired an equaliser.

Again Offaly took the lead, with Carroll slotting over his first score, but a fourth Shiels point ensured parity once again after 19 minutes.

Antrim were dealt a major blow after St. John’s clubman Simon McCrory was forced to make an early exit with a shoulder injury.

The hosts continued apace with Ciaran Clarke pushing them back ahead, but Antrim certainly didn’t have it all their own way.

By the 22nd minute, Antrim keeper O’Connell had made three superb goal saves, including ones from Conor Mahon and Shane Dooley.

Bergin led by example as the Offaly captain forced the sides to be level on the fifth occasion, but Antrim suddenly took over.

Four unanswered points, finishing with a Tomas McCann score ensured he became Antrim’s seventh scorer as they moved 0-11 to 0-7 ahead in the 29th minute.

Colin Egan tried hard to keep Offaly in touch, and got two well worked points, but Antrim held out before the break and took a 0-13 to 0-10 interval lead.

It looked good for Antrim at the start of the second half as a Clarke point handed them a four-point lead, but Offaly never went away.

David Kenny’s goal raised the hopes of the small Offaly travelling support, including All-Ireland winner Joe Dooley, after the Belmont clubman cut around Antrim full-back Conor McKinley.

Momentum was with the visitors at this stage, with points from substitute Derek Morkan and Bergin ensuring a 1-12 to 0-14 lead seven and a half minutes into the half.

Antrim levelled through Neil McManus and although Shane Dooley put Offaly in front, the hosts responded well.

Shiels, Conor McCann and Stephen McAfee all fired scores to hand Antrim a 0-19 to 1-13 lead with 17 minutes left on the clock.

O’Connell was continuing to perform heroics between the posts, with an outstretched leg denying Mahon of a certain goal.

At the opposite end Antrim bagged their lone goal through PJ O’Connell, but Offaly never gave up.

A fourth point from Carroll cut the gap to two points in the 66th minute, with Offaly coming good also in injury time.

In the 71st minute Carroll’s long range free powered through a crowded goalmouth and into the net to hand Offaly a one-point lead.

While substitute Sean Cleary sealed a well-earned win with a point at the death.
