Laochra Gael - Brian Whelahan TG4 26/1/05
Brian Whelahan is the only player of the modern era to be named on the
Hurling Team of the Millennium. Hurling is a part of his life; he was
brought up with it, his father played, his brothers play. Brian's debut on
the Offaly senior hurling team in 1989 marked the beginning of Offaly's
second golden era of hurling. Throughout the 1990's Offaly secured 2 All-
Irelands and 3 Leinster titles, with Brian racking up a personal tally of 4
All-Stars and 2 Hurler of the Year awards. He was also the corner stone
on the Birr Hurling Team, regarded by many as the greatest club team of all time, amassing four All Ireland titles between 1995 and 2003.

Great show last night......brought back happy memories of glory days past.

It would appear that we were only offended by Bab's "sheep in a heap" statement because we're not a traditional hurling county.............interesting logic.

I think it was more Babs slagging off the team to the press that offended the players. the sheep phrase was just used to beat him with.

but keep digging babs!!

B*&^%$ky Babs

Just re-read the Indo articles from the aftermath of the 1998 LH final which are elsewhere on this site.
I suppose what Keating said about such a thing not happening in a 'hurling' county could be true, in that coaching such as described therein wouldn't be tolerated in Kilkenny or Cork or elsewhere.
Does he think people still take him seriously or something?
Otherwise, excellent programme. I didn't realise there was amateur footage of the 1992 U21 AIF. Could have lasted an hour and there'd still be a rake of stuff left out.
The penalty save against Calre was a particular highlight.

Babs

Post by The Biff »

The fact that Babs "slagged off and dumped" a team that, just a couple of months later, managed to win the All-Ireland; this has got to hurt him. He claimed the players were not up to it, but I think the players proved that HE couldn't get them up for it, while a virtually unknown man could step in and produce the goods. As for Sid himself, has there ever been another occasion where a patently sick player has produced such a match-winning performance? Sweet!

p.s. BnMm - your avatar pictures are too big. And you need a shave.

You have to love Babs.
I remember after the Wexford match that year, he was giving quotes like "these players have given me everything...with the county board behind us", "the skill that's in this Offaly team is unreal".
A couple of weeks later on "Sideline View" he was going on about the great camraderie between him and the players etc.

In typical Babs style, once he got the boot, he completely contradicted all of this when he started slagging off the team.
