Matt was a pure genius, John O'Leary (Dublin goalie) said that he was the only forward of that time that he feared in that he had always one thing on his mind 'GOAL'.

I have had the pleasure of watching him play and as a freetaker alone he was worth his place on the team but he was such a dangerous forward at any time at club and county level from open play too.

More importantly Matt has shown he is a role model beyond sport when he had his accident to bounce back and lead a full life was an inspiration to many others also dealt a heavy blow in life.

Well deserved Matt.

A legend on the field and an inspiration in how he dealt with his accident. I remember a few tears being shed when we heard at home what had happened to him. Any clips of him playing should be recorded onto a dvd a distributed to any young forwards in school to show them that we once had a more prolific player than the Gooch. Imagine the scoring records that could have been created had he been able to keep playing into his 30's.

This recognition is long overdue!

All I can say about Matt Connor is that I never saw a better footballer. Maybe Maurice Fitzgerald was close but that's it.

was watching the kerry v offaly game 1980 all ireland semi on tg4 the other night my god matt was just class. his free taking was just so simple put the ball down no hanging around straight over the bar, a forward that could win his own ball and take on 3 or 4 defenders and score. there will never be a forward as good again , he had it all , skill, speed, toughness , a class act.

Many of us only realised how good he was when he could not play..................

It was a privilage to watch him and then to lose not just him but a few others to emigration was pure devastation..........
