Favourite club ground

Post by Fargo Boyle »

Lads

Its back to that time of the year again when we're back playing matches and travelling around the county to far flung corners. Obviously apart from your home ground what other club grounds would you consider to be your favourite not just in terms of quality of the pitch or facilites etc. but for whatever reason e.g. good atmosphere or funny occasions etc.

A few to kick off

Ballycommon cos its a tight pitch and the pitch is a pure bog hole
Geashill pitch has a nice setting
Clonmore because it is like the end of the world

I only really visit the football venues so would be good to hear from some of the west offaly men

Birr because of its great atmosphere and tradition attached - a shame what they have let happen to the pitch though
Lusmagh has to be the best of the west, top-class playing surface and facilities - deserves more championship games
Killavila because of the banter it creates when you arrive at the pitch and see the state of it..

What about ballyskenach pitch??? Or the one behind the county arms hotel. Have great memories from that pitch when playing with the primary school years ago. And onto the black bull to celebrate winning the county final with a bottle of coke. Great times.

Favourite Pitch: Has to be Clonbullogue, especially in late November or early February.
Favourite Colour: Pink

Geashill is a favourite of mine.

O'Connor Park always brings about a good buzz among the players too

On the flip side, I always hated playing in Edenderry & was never a fan of going to Ferbane either

I like red.

Another place that always generates abit of a laugh is Bracknagh because no matter how many times you go down to play a match there half the team will always get lost (good damn Bracknagh bypass!!)

Some hill on that pitch. Usually the wind blows down the hill so you have the wind and the hill advantage for one half and a pure nightmare for the other half.

Pitches i like playing in.

1: Geashill(not when theres been a downpour or when there is a heatwave though!)
2: Cappincur(the crowd in cappincur do be intimidating!)
3: Walsh Island: great history, feel proud playing on pitch that reared so many greats from years gone by
4: Ballinagar(cause you can cut your very own turf with your knees! improving though a lot of work going into getting the pitch in decent condition)
5: Killeigh(nice and flat, very open. fast forwards dream)
6: OConnor Pk (for obvious reasons)
7: Croghan (lovely setup over there great pitch and even better astro)
8: Daingean: (pitch has improved vastly but the dressing rooms are still poor)

only played in number 3, 6 and 7 once though as i'm lost in junior A

My review from pitchs i've played in for what it worth:

1: Geashill - Nice facilities, terrible surface, borderline dangerous.
2: Cappincur - Lovely little pitch for a small club, pity about the hill up near the dressing rooms
3: Walsh Island - Good, improved alot in last 10 years, can be very hard in summer.
4: Ballinagar - an absolute bog!
5: Killeigh - always seems to vast but, very easy to end up in a barrier on the church side of the field
6: OConnor Pk - Would love to play here to a full stadiam, but not happen leading to a terrible eery feeling when 40 people are just in the stand. new d rooms are great.
7: O Brian park: Not good to play in, never well lined
7: Croghan - Nice pitch but grass sometimes does be to short
8: Daingean: Alot work needed here, never liked it
9: Rhode: Main pitch is so much better now they have a training pitch down the back
10: Edenderry: Not for me
11: Clonbullogue: Same as above, wind, misserable, depression! just like they would like opposition to think :)
12: Clonmore: Very nice pitch to play in
13: gracefield: Nice pitch and great facilites
14: killurin: Dont like it, always feel like im in durrow
15: Durrow: Dont like it, always feel like im in killurin :)
16: Ballinamere: Good pitch, can be annoying when a ball ends up in the field at the far end! good surface but can get very hard.
17: Clara: The old pitch was boggy, but always liked the stand
18: Kilcormac: A nice pitch
19: mountbolus: A little gem for a small village, surface can get very hard but great for a fast game of hurling
20: Ballycumber: Grand, could do with a good rolling but is well layed out.
21:Pullogh: Not for me, especially the far end
22: ferbane: A perfect main pitch, all thats required it has.
23: Doon: As above, great field.
24: moystown: Great hurling field, great for a sunny saturday even
25: Shannonbridge: very bumpy and always needs a good cutting of the grass
26: Banagher: Main pitch very durable, special surface around the goal mouth can lead to mistakes though
27: Birr: A great tight club hurling game, miss it
28: crinkle: The last place god created :)
29: Kinnity: Veyr boggy, to be expected, never was fond of it
30: Rath: Great field
31: Carrig: A nice layout and tight but surface lets it down, not sure if they have a training pitch but it would help if they had
32: Colderry: Not for me, dirty ball winners dream :)
33: Shinrone: Always found it was -6 degrees here! dressing rooms are awful

great reviews

not really looking for what pitches are the best in terms of facilities and surface but looking for pitches you like beacuse of the crowd or the atmosphere of the place etc.
