When they last won a title

Post by Plain of the Herbs »

Drumcullen’s ending of a long famine, and the chance the Final appearance gave their parish a chance to put the flags up got me thinking – when is the last time the Premier team in each club won a title?
An analysis is below for the hurling clubs – someone who follows the football closer than I do might do likewise for the football.

The Premier team means the club’s Senior team (or Intermediate or junior team if they were an Intermediate or Junior club) and does not count titles won by a Junior team.

Coolderry: SHC winners this year
Tullamore: SHC winners last year
Kinnitty: SHC winners 1985
Kilcormac/Killoughey: IHC winners 1984 (Killoughey), IHC winners 1982 (Kilcormac).
St. Rynagh’s: SHC winners 1993
Shinrone: IHC winners 1991
Seir Kieran: SHC winners 1998
Birr: SHC winners 2008
Lusmagh: SHC winners 1989
Shamrocks: IHC winners 2000
Belmont: IHC winners 2004
Brosna Gaels: IHC winners last year
Drumcullen: IHC winners this year
Ballyskenagh: IHC winners 2008
Carrig & Riverstown: IHC winners 1996
Killavilla: IHC winners 2002
Crinkill: JHC winners 2001
Killurin: JHC winners 2008
Clara: IHC winners 2003

Now to put them in date order-

Coolderry: SHC winners this year
Drumcullen: IHC winners this year
Tullamore: SHC winners last year
Brosna Gaels: IHC winners last year
Birr: SHC winners 2008
Ballyskenagh: IHC winners 2008
Killurin: JHC winners 2008
Belmont: IHC winners 2004
Clara: IHC winners 2003
Killavilla: IHC winners 2002
Crinkill: JHC winners 2001
Shamrocks: IHC winners 2000
Seir Kieran: SHC winners 1998
Carrig & Riverstown: IHC winners 1996
St. Rynagh’s: SHC winners 1993
Shinrone: IHC winners 1991
Lusmagh: SHC winners 1989
Kinnitty: SHC winners 1985
Kilcormac/Killoughey: IHC winners 1984 (Killoughey), IHC winners 1982 (Kilcormac).

Oops. I should have got that Edenderry one – I was at that Junior final when they beat Tullamore in Killeigh a fortnight after Offaly’s All-Ireland win.

I should also have used Raheen’s Junior B win last year, Durrow’s Junior A win in 2002, Gracefield’s Junior A hurling win in 1992, Daingean’s Junior B win in 1985, while something tells me Rhode/St. Brigid’s won a Junior C hurling final in the mid-to-late 90s.

Tullamore – SFC winners 2007
Ballycumber – IFC winners 1994

St Rynagh’s – IFC winners this year
Durrow – JFC winners last year
Raheen – IFC winners 1981
Shannonbridge – SFC winners 1996
Birr – JFC winners 2005
Clonbullogue – JFC winners 1980
Doon – SFC ‘B’ winners 1991
Bracknagh – IFC winners 2000
Ballyfore – IFC winners 2001
Kilclonfert – JFC winners 2004
Clonmore Harps – JFC winners this year
Daingean – IFC winners 2002
Cappincur – IFC winners 1987
Killeigh – JFC winners 1979
Kilcormac/Kiloughey – IFC winners 1998

Now to put them in date order – who’s endured the longest famine?

Rhode won a junior B hurling final 2000. They beat Kinnitty. I was midfield and Pascal Kellaghan roasted me. Also on that Rhode team was a strong Tom Coffey at centre back. Can't remember if any other Offalty footballers played. It is a pity they didn't keep hurling going in Rhode as they weren't a bad team.

Meant Offaly there obviously.

Not that I should mention Kinnitty and football after what happened this year but Kinnitty won the Junior C Football championship in 2008. They are probably few other teams that also won Junior C like Coolderry few years earlier.

Rhode hurlers would have faced the same no win situation the Kinnity footballers found themselves in a few weeks back.....
Wouldn't Coffey have a Junior 'C' hurling medal when Ballyfore won it in 96 or 97 (i think). Also Ballinamere/Durrow or Columbas as they were known won 'B' and 'A' titles in around 2000 or 2001.

We won Junior 'B' championship twice in the meantime, 1998 & 2003.

Daingean also won a Junior C hurling title in 1988 with the great Tommy Greene recieving another medal. He won his first junior title in football in 1953. Legend!

Yea, Hock, but I'm only dealing with the 'first' team of each club.

Not 100% sure of the year, but I know Coolderry won the Junior C championship on one or two occasions over the last 5-6 years.

Hard to believe that its 25 years since Kinnity won the Sean Robbins and its going on 20 years now for Rynaghs!!!

The roll of honour for Junior B & C football and hurling would make interesting reading alright. I've the Junior B hurling one for most of the last 2 decades but nothing for the other grades.

Why do the county board not have list of 'B' and 'C' winners for the football and hurling championships on the website? That would be asking to much of them considering they don't even post the present fixtures on it.
